Joe Arpaio's Latest Hysterical Appeal for Cash, and His Non-Existent Recall

joeybloey.JPG
Looks like Arpaio wants to horn in on all the Russell Pearce recall action...

If I didn't know that his fundraising appeals are written by the usual political hacks, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's latest e-mail blast would make me doubt the man's sanity.

Not that there isn't plenty of reason to doubt it otherwise, but an e-mail blast sent out yesterday signed by Joe rails about a non-existent recall effort against the sheriff and berates (without naming him) challenger and Scottsdale Police Department Lieutenant Mike Stauffer for making "outrageous and criminal allegations" about him.

Neither of these claims is apparently true. I know, shocking that Arpaio would have an issue with truth-telling, eh?

At one point, the letter reads that, "...we have learned that there is a fully organized effort to RECALL me from office! These left-wing agitators are organizing and raising money to fund a petition drive to remove me from office as I write this letter."

joebloey2.JPG
More palaver from Maricopa County's prince of prevarication...

Well, first off, I can pretty much guarantee you that Joe did not write this letter. Though, he may have eyeballed it before it was e-mailed.

Second, according to Maricopa County Elections Director Karen Osborne, no group has filed with her office to start collecting signatures and money for an Arpaio recall. That's required under state law.

If there is a recall group out there somewhere, they're doing a pretty good job of remaining invisible. I would have heard about any serious effort. The moment it began it would be big news. So it's safe to call bull on this one.

Then there are the references to Stauffer, who is not mentioned by name. The solicitation seems to be referencing a public, June letter to Arpaio from Stauffer, calling Arpaio out on some of his more recent misdeeds as sheriff.

If by "outrageous and criminal allegations," Joe means that what Stauffer said in the June letter is "criminal," that too is bull. If he means that Stauffer is alleging criminal malfeasance by Arpaio, well, if the pink underwear fits...

The e-mail kvetches about Stauffer saying that Arpaio's office is run "like a third-world dictatorship" and that Arpaio stole $100 million of taxpayer dollars from the jail enhancement fund to use any way he damn well pleased

Arpaio denounces such claims as "false and slanderous." In reality, as we all know, they are spot on.

joeybloey333.JPG
Give and give till it hurts, if you're dumb enough to donate to a man with $2.8 million-plus in the kitty

The sheriff also whines like a big, gray-haired baby about being called "too old" to do his job. Actually, this seems to be something Stauffer implied in commenting about Arpaio's and the MCSO's lack of technology savvy.

"Arpaio's neglect for even the most basic technology needs of his agency has stagnated the MCSO's ability to work smoothly with the other agencies in the county," Stauffer recently wrote on his Facebook page.

Stauffer later added that,

"It's time for a sheriff who is current on law enforcement technology, knows what is needed to do the job, and is focused on providing the best equipment for the employees and the public."

Fair shot, if you ask me. Arpaio is 79, and will be 80 when he stands for re-election next year. It's one thing to be old, and it's another to be antediluvian when it comes to technology. If you're gonna stay ahead of the bad guys, you should at least be current. And that's Stauffer's all-too valid criticism.

joeybloey444.JPG
Joe looks like someone's been pickin' on him. Awwww....

The more I see from Stauffer, the more impressed I am, and the more I think Joe has something to worry about in 2012. Stauffer, a Republican, will have to get out of a GOP primary, though. A tall order in Maricopa County.

Also, Arpaio's campaign is loaded. His finance filers are as massive as doorstops, if printed out. His last filing in November of 2010 showed that he had $2.8 million in cash on hand. He may have twice as much as that now, as far as we know. His next campaign finance report is not due to the county until January 31, 2012.

So why does Arpaio need more moolah? Money is influence. And the more he has, the more power he has.

The hysterical nature of Arpaio's fundraising e-mails is both ludicrous and par for the course. They're meant to draw in as much out-of-state cash as possible. And, sadly, there are a lot of folks gullible enough to fall for Joe's appeals, even when those appeals are little more than a patchwork of paranoid prevarications.

I just thought of something,  The New Times staff should check and see if someone has broken into this website and gotten the personal identifying information of people who post comments here.

I had an interesting thing happen.  While I was coming home from work today, I got pulled over by a Maricopa County deputy.  He takes my license, says " I hear you don't like the Sheriff. Just remember that we know where you live".  He gets back in his patrol car and drives away.  After surviving leukemia twice and a brain aneurism, I am not afraid of a corrupt sheriff and his deputy lackey.

Rick: is there any way you can back this up. Not that I don't believe you, but as the campaign manager to Police Lt. Mike Stauffer who is Arpaio's opponent I would love to have possibly a deputy name, car tag number, time of day, location etc. If you wish please email the campaign or please do an interview with Steve Lemons or James King of this blog. You can contact the campaign at 480.414.6868

You know yesterday I was mad, today I am concerned about the threat implied by this deputy.  I have chosen to let this matter drop but I promise you that if it happens again to any other person in Maricopa county I will be the first to contact the Stauffer election campaign and Steve Lemons at the Phoenix New Times with the information you request.

What happened to Honesty and Integrity? Should both of those qualities be a minimum standard for a Sheriff?

Based on the lyrics of a song, "Only the Good Die Young", Arpiao will live to be 300 years old.  If he is so dead set on being recalled I think it only fitting that his less than adoring public oblige!

It is amazing to me that he only can talk about immigration since that is the only thing that his office works on.  He is the only police force to take care of the rural areas but they spend all their time and money on immigration mostly in the Phoenix area where the Phoenix police have jurisdiction.  But the rural area's don't get much press coverage.  MCSO even blow off rapes, child molesters and even murderers so they can concentrate on the people who mow our lawns.  What a sick POS to put politics over people's safety.

Tommy Collins

Anthony, his poor resource management is actually worse than you portray. The majority of enforcement deputies are assigned within the Phoenix metro area. The areas outside the PHX metroplex are woefully understaffed by enforcement deputies and MANY MCSO calls for law enforcement have to be handled by other police agencies, such as DPS... simply because most of the MCSO deputies are staging dog and pony shows for Sun City.

Yourproductsucks
Yourproductsucks

DPS doesn't handle criminal calls for service.  DPS is purposely designed that way.  They have no jurisdiction over Title 13 matters (there are some exceptions which include drug enforcement/ stolen vehicle recovery.) NIce try though.

Where are these masses of "enforcement" deputies assigned and what are they enforcing in the Phoenix Metro Area?

While I agree with the districts being understaffed I don't agree with the reason why.  The County has not hired a deputy in over 3 years and therefore the Sheriff's Office is severely understaffed.  You have no evidence to support your statement that "MANY" calls for law enforcement are being handled by other police agencies.  I dare you to find one, just one case that supports your allegations.

"You are not the omnipotent authority regarding law enforcement as you paint yourself out to be." (sic)

And YOU are??

Yourproductsucks
Yourproductsucks

Why are you so negative towards those in your peer group?  Sun City residents are continually discriminated against by those on the left and it is quite hypocritical to think that ageism is somehow more acceptable than any other form of discrimintation.

Regarding DPS- let me throw out a hypothetical that you can go to your Avondale connection with- If a DPS officer, while patrolling Interstate 10 sees a car in front of him and the occupants of the car are physically fighting with one another while travelling west at Avondale Blvd and that same DPS officer stops the vehicle (as he should) and discovers that the driver and the passenger engaged in the fight are married, what would be the next step that DPS Officer makes?

The correct answer is- CALL Avondale PD to take disposition on the DV call.

Why did DPS not arrest Scott Bundgaard?  Why did PPD arrest him instead?  Jurisdiction, that is why.

Certainly, when asked, most times agencies will assist one another.  Assisting another agency by responding as a backup or even to get initial control of a scene is NOT the same as "handling" the call.  If a call can be cleared with no followup needed, I would agree with your assessment of "handle", and would also add that this happens amongst ALL law enforcement agencies and is not exclusive of MCSO.

Avondale PD does not take disposition of a call for service outside their jurisdiction.  Responding to assist an officer in need of help or securing a scene until an officer can arrive? Absolutely.  Taking disposition on a homocide, a rape, a child molest?  Never happens.  But the opposite is true.  IF a municipal agency refuses to take disposition of a crime within their jurisdiction it is the responsibility of the Sheriff's Office of that county to take disposition.  That happens quite often.

Concurrent jurisdiction is not a term used in law enforcement in the State of Arizona.

You are not the omnipotent authority regarding law enforcement as you paint yourself out to be.

Tommy Collins
Tommy Collins

Please. Yes, DPS does handle criminal calls for service. It's called concurrent jurisdiction. I'm sure you've heard of it. Also, mutual aid agreements. I'm sure you've heard of those, right? When a priority 1 call is received by dispatch and the agency with jurisdiction of record (such as MCSO in unincorporated or contracted areas such as Guadalupe) is NOT available then dispatch calls other agencies, such as DPS to respond and handle the call until the responsible agency can. In many cases the 'assist' agency actually handles the call and charges are made by the county attorney.

Surely you know that, right?

I will check with my sources at Avondale P.D. and Gilbert P.D. and get case information on calls they handled in just the last week where MCSO was responsible and not able to respond because they had no one available.

Remember, when you post this garbage to me I'm not just the average Sun City resident who believes everything spewed by MCSO command staff. Not even your mush, my friend.

Just like intelligence and tips led to the Stapley, et. al. debacle.

Law Enforcement can and does cite intelligence sources at times.  However, when cited by MCSO, I instant suspect the statement of being disingenuous.  It will take a new Sheriff and some time before MCSO can be trusted to tell us the truth.

While I doubt that Arpaio wrote this, there are a couple of AARPaio-isms in the text.  He talks not of being Sheriff but of being "the Sheriff."  There are a few more sprinkled in there.  Sounded if I was listening to one of his speeches.  I guess his letter writers have probably listened to him talk several times  They probably know both of his speeches by memory now.

Arpaio has conned SO many people....and it's the out-of-state people who don't realize what a con artist he is.  I hope somebody does check into whether county computers and county employees'  time  were used to unlawfully send this communication to vulnerable recipients.

Also, if Arpaio currently has over $2 million in his leftover campaign funds from his 2008 election, what are the "do's" and "don't's" for expending moneys out of this fund which he's now seeking to beef up with additional contributions from gullible donors?

I recall that Arpaio got fined last year (he was not up for re-election) over the misuse of money from that fund after he used it to pay for TV ads and mailers to specifically have hit pieces made against interim county attorney Rick Romley, a 2010 candidate for Maricopa County Attorney.

Arpaio says here, "Not only will I now have the toughest re-election campaign of my career, I will now have to fight this blatantly political maneuver by the open borders and Amnesty crowd to stop the recall effort."

"THE" recall effort??  Since there is NO recall effort that has been initiated against Arpaio, is the above section of his  solicitation letter phrased as such to be deliberately taken out of context,  so Arpaio will feel legally justified in passing  along to recalled Senator Russell Pearce moneys Arpaio might receive from this emailed plea?  After all, those are Pearce's hackneyed fear mongering words used to fight his own recall: "open borders and Amnesty crowd."

Funny thing, though -- neither the CBA's grounds for recalling Pearce, nor Pearce's counter statement, both of which will be printed on the Nov. 8 recall election ballot, makes any reference to illegal immigration.

Moreover, last year Arpaio resigned from Pearce's BAN (Ban Amnesty Now) Committee, another organization which Pearce and Arpaio devised about a year ago to solicit funds. However, the J.D.Hayworth emailed fundraising letter of a few months ago sent to prospective donors, was a specific plea for recipients of that Hayworth letter to send checks to BAN in order to help Senator Pearce to fight his own recall.

This letter is by far one of the gutsiest and most dishonest missives emanating from Arpaio.

Notice at the end of the letter it requests recipients to pass it along to at least five of their "friends, family members, and other individuals who share our views."

How many more suckers will he lure to part with their money for his dishonest scam?

Yourproductsucks

Where is the evidence that Arpaio did this? It certainly is a scam, but I question the authorship. Stephen does nothing to determine who is responsible for this or where the money is going.

Not likely. This is pretty consistent with the idiocies of Shurf Joe and his cronies. And it is relatively easy to find out if this was a Shurf Joe production by viewing the e-mail header and researching the originating IP address.
