Russell Pearce's Possible Challenger Jerry Lewis, and the Yelping of Pearce's Media Lap Dogs

Channel 12's Brahm Resnik has outed a possible challenger to state Senate President Russell Pearce in the November 8 recall election in Legislative District 18: Jerry Lewis, and, no, not the cheesy dude on the telethons.

Resnik writes in his blog that,

"This would be Lewis' first run for elected office. He is a former senior manager in the tax department at the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche. He is now assistant superintendent at Sequoia Schools, a statewide operator of charter schools, including the former Pappas school for homeless kids."

In addition, Resnik identifies Lewis, 54, as an ex-Bishop and ex-stake president in the Mormon church, and a 30-year resident of Mesa. So far, so good. Lets hope there are no skeletons to dig up, because you know Pearce's people will be hunting for 'em.

I find the emergence of this potential contender rather amusing considering that just a day or so before local scribbler Howie Fischer of the Howie Fischer News Service (aka, "Capitol Media Services") and my esteemed colleague Dennis Welch of the Arizona Guardian website were on Resnik's show, pooh-pooh-ing the possibility that Pearce could be licked.

The race is Pearce's to lose, the pair predicted, before Lewis' name emerged. Keep in mind, this is the same non-dynamic duo who previously ridiculed the recall effort by Citizens for a Better Arizona, with an attitude of "big deal" and "I'll believe it when I see it."

They've since had to eat those words, now that a recall election is a reality. But their brains are so addled by the dusty, moldering air of the state Senate building, where they normally dwell, that they cannot conceive of a reality beyond its walls. And the real chance that Pearce's day's are numbered.

In the pre-Lewis segment, Fischer offered that the ideal candidate to run against Pearce should be a Mormon, a Republican and a woman, someone he referred to as "this mythical person who exists in West Phoenix somewhere."

West Phoenix? Can Fischer even find Mesa on a map? As Bugs Bunny would say, what a ma-roon.

As far as "mythical" goes, Lewis seems to have laid that to rest, though he does not meet Fischer's pompous pronouncement to a T, as he ain't no woman. But there are even women in Mesa who could give Pearce a run for his dolo.

I'm thinking of GOPer Claudia Walters, former vice-Mayor of Mesa, one-time candidate for Mayor and current vice president of the Mesa United Way. Walters is Mormon, and has an impeccable record of dedication to public service.

She would make a fine candidate, and is hardly mythical. The fact that Fischer was unaware of her existence shows what a talent-less dope he is. I have no idea if she'd be interested in running. I offer her name merely to counter Fischer's cluelessness.

For his part, Welch insisted that if there are a bunch of names on the ballot, this will favor Pearce. Yes and no. This election will be a unique event. Only Pearce and his rivals will be on the ballot. There's nothing else to draw folks to the polls.

Also, candidates will not have D's, R's, or L's next to their names. Sure, most people who read the paper know Pearce is a Republican, but here's a news flash: A lot of people in Pearce's district have no idea who the guy is, other than they've heard negative stuff about him.

I know this from going door-to-door with the signature-gatherers. Those who knew who Pearce was, outright loathed him (with very few exceptions). Others signed the petition after being told what a hate bunny he is.

Interestingly, Pearce is despised even in Mesa's politically powerful Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Many fellow LDSers consider Pearce to be an embarrassment, a ham-fisted, uncouth knuckle-dragger.

For numerous Mormons and GOPers, the recall is the chance they've been waiting for to rid themselves of this loathsome goon.

Resnik asked if the stance of the Mormon church on immigration might be a game changer. The LDS church has backed both state legislation that would allow for guest workers, as well as the Utah Compact, which calls for humane immigration reform.

And in June, the LDS church issued a statement calling for a path to legalization for the estimated 12 million undocumented in our midst.

It proclaimed that, "The bedrock moral issue for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is how we treat each other as children of God."

And it made allusions to dark eras in mankind's recent past:

"The history of mass expulsion or mistreatment of individuals or families is cause for concern especially where race, culture, or religion are involved. This should give pause to any policy that contemplates targeting any one group, particularly if that group comes mostly from one heritage. "

Tell me, do you think Pearce looks upon illegal immigrants as "children of God"? Hell, no. But Fischer, ever the fumbler, belittled the church's historic moral stance, characterizing it as "a little more liberal than Russel's."

Are you freaking kidding me? The church's pronouncement is in direct contradiction to Pearce's crass nativism, which is in no way "liberal."

To that point, read this passage from the June LDS statement:

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is concerned that any state legislation that only contains enforcement provisions is likely to fall short of the high moral standard of treating each other as children of God."

Of course, Mormons are not the only ones who vote in LD18, but the LDS is very influential there, obviously. The church also stated that "as a matter of policy" it discourages its members from "entering any country without legal documentation."

It also affirmed a commitment to border security and stemming the flow of illegal immigration, but it advocated for a "balanced and civil approach to a challenging problem, fully consistent with its tradition of compassion, its reverence for family, and its commitment to law."

Fischer is an exasperating idiot, whose head is so thick that it could be used as the cornerstone for a government building. It's a testament to the backwards, Hee-Haw-like political scene here in Sand Land that this clueless doofus with his annoying Yankee accent qualifies as a talking head on any subject, much less current events.

As for Welch, I like him, and would rather drink a beer with him than Fischer any day, but he should get off the Capitol grounds once in a blue moon and talk to someone other than the jaded, ill-informed political hacks that populate that tiny enclave.

Otherwise he'll be known for the same moronic pronouncements of his media bunk-mate Fischer.

I think Jerry Lewis is a golden jewel of a candidate.   I am so looking forward to sending his campaign a check!

I saw Howie Fischer acting in an extremely rude and unprofessional manner just a few months back while questioning Randy Parraz up at the Capitol.  I was so disgusted!  Randy handled the situation very well.  Mr Fischer obviously does not realize that Karma will too visit him one day, just like she has done with Russell Pearce!!

Linda, You are a mind reader. I attended and would have written exactly what you wrote.  Howie Fischer has no credibility after witnessing him in action.

Howie Fischer is a lying piece of crap, who to put it bluntly I believe would suck the shit out of Russell Pearce's ass if it would pay his bills. And if Howie would think that is untrue then I would ask if Howie would submit to a business audit.

Steven, get over it with Howie Fischer.  He is an actual journalist, you are just a nobody hack.  Really, your venom towards him makes you look like a 9 year old girl.  You got a great story, we all hate Pearce, report on that and leave your personal crap behind.

Just in case you don't get it the get is the only people who give Howie the time of day at the Capitol is Howie and whomever he offers to blow. He is truly held in disregard by what is left of actual journalists. Howie just wants to make sure he is on the right side of his rent money...actually listen to the bullshit that comes out of his mouth. He is a used car salesman or the lawyer you find out too late should have been disbarred.

No actually Howie Fischer is a political ambulance chaser. I have lived here since 85. Since you have no ability to discriminate, Howie Fischer is your slimy friend at the bar who starts a fight and then leaves because he is a little slimy coward and sucking cocks in the corner beats finding a real job.

Stephen may have gone overboard in chastising Fischer, justifiably offended at Fischer's arrogance and analytical ignorance, but his point is well made.

As a journalist, Fischer obviously does live in a cocoon, the state capitol.  And that's it.  He reports only on what current state legislators and other state office holders say and do. Not only had Fischer obviously never heard of Mesa's Claudia Walters to fit his recommended mold, his self-assured gaff,  referring to west Mesa as "west Phoenix,"  was dumbfounding to Mesa viewers.

About two years ago I remember Fischer saying on Horizon that he (Fischer) has a longer "tenure" at the capitol than any of the legislators.  Last year (also on Horizon) when Pearce was saying and doing some quite outlandish things, in addition to discussing a particular political topic, Fischer offered, "I like Russell."Also last year in one of Fisher's reports, he even wrote a huge goof.  He substituted the name Sarah Palin for another female he was covering in the article. (I immediately wrote him about the error, and he quickly corrected it.)

Cockiness leads to carelessness in any line of work.  And Howie Fischer clearly has no grasp of District 18 voters'  understanding of Russell Pearce.....how he has damaged this state immeasurably and will continue to do so, if we District 18 voters allow for him to continue on his reckless road of unaccountability.

Did anyone read in today's Arizona Republic the Parraz article? Page B5 I think. The opposite page is the letters to the editor, who happens to be the FF of MCSO's son-in-law.

No, I don't buy the rag, what did he have to say ?

Parraz discusses the Pearce recall. The leading editorial tells that by recalling Pearce, maybe this state can return to a degree of normalcy.

Coz, maybe they're available online (azcentral.com)  If not, together they're  worth the dollar to buy the paper.   The Randy interview and the lead editorial are each 1/3 page in size, so not easy to summarize.

Jason, I just read both. Thanks for the reference. The editorial speaks volumes. I find it 'tongue in cheek' anticipating pearce is about to lose his ass in the recall election. The article on Randy Parraz is just a snippet shot of what the man is all about.

Make no mistake; Randy is bright, well educated, well spoken, and gives thought to his thoughts before sharing them.

How many times have we EVER heard pearce or the Flaccid Fool simply reply with, "I don't know", or "I have no idea" when asked a question about something? It just doesn't happen. Both of them feel they have to give an answer even when there is none, or they would be forecasting the future without any knowledge of the issue at hand.

Again, thanks for guiding me to these articles.

Isn't that Q&A interview of Randy Parraz outstanding?  I was so thrilled with that, even clipped it, that I didn't see the "Arizona's Return to Normalcy" unsigned editorial on the opposite page....also excellent and encouraging.  Appreciate what you pointed out about very bright Randy giving thought to his thoughts before sharing them, and having no inhibitions about honestly responding "I don't know" unlike the two compulsive answer givers you mentioned.

The East Valley Tribune seems to be on top of this story: "In a statement released Friday, Lewis said he's a lifelong conservative Republican who plans to announce whether he's running next week." http://www.eastvalleytribune.c...

I seldom read any EVT articles concerning politics, not necessarily because their content might be skewed, but most of the commentary, monopolized by a couple of posters, is same-ole, same-ole....irrational, accusatory towards other commenters who offer anything unfavorable about Pearce or Arpaio, harping about illegal immigrants, etc.

This one isn't as bad as most but does contain 3-in-a-row comments by one of these types who goes by "NothingButTheTruth" with an avatar of the statue of liberty.  Very much like Bobby on these NT articles.

Couldn't agree more on the jaded, ill-informed political hacks that populate the Capitol grounds. They talk to no one and could care less about the peoples' concerns. Chad Snow and Randy Parraz are a class-act team with the professionalism and tone that is needed in Arizona.

The extremists on the far left(i.e. Mistalee and Enemy of Evil Bastards amongst) may cherish your absence and/or disappearance. But it was nice having you around to share your views. I find your comments hilarious at times. Wish you could side with us in the middle, not the left or right. And fight for what's right and rationale. Not the La Razas, not the Wing-nuts. But for the American people!

Good luck Bobby.

Bobby, you're not alone in your thoughts and concerns about illegal immigration. I will even say that most of those who post on these pages are concerned about illegal immigration and DON'T support it. That said, however, we ARE also very concerned about how existing immigration law is being abused by MCSO for the purpose of garnering votes for an aged and clearly mentally challenged sheriff.

Many of our state politicians have used the immigration issue to garner votes, to the extreme that they even added "voted FOR SB-1070" on their campaign signs in 2010, having seen the significant advantage Mrs. Brewer gained after having signed the bill into law.

I don't see this 'issue' as being able to destroy our country, however over time we will have to come to a compromise on our immigration policy, allowing restricted access to our country to individuals who want to come here to better themselves, whether it be from the north border or south border.

Illegal immigration will not stop at any point, but might be minimized with completion of a wall and constant surveillance at the south border, all of which is very costly and task heavy. Canada seems interested in controlling immigration in both directions. Mexico doesn't seem to care, as long as the heavy traffic is going north and easing the government burden of trying to take care of many millions of their citizens and illegal immigrants passing through the country.

Should you actually choose to remove yourself from these pages, that's certainly your choice and it may be good for your sanity and well being. However if you choose to stay or return at some point there is no value in the name calling and silly rhetoric you've engaged in, as you seem to have realized.

Many years ago I read a great article in Reader's Digest. It was written by a lady who worked for a CEO of a very large U.S. corporation. She said her boss would call her into his office and dictate nasty letters to some of his opponents have her deliver those letters for his signature. Most times the letter sat on his desk for several days without being signed. Then he would call her into his office and dictate the letter over, making his point without offending the recipient of the letter. Before his retirement she asked him why he did so, "The first letter is just letting off steam and making me feel better by saying what I am thinking at the time, without caring for the feelings of the recipient. The follow up letter is to make my point without hurting feelings or belittling those who might disagree with me".

In today's instant electronic society we too often throw out our thoughts, before thinking them through.

I thank you for your kind note. I respect your opinion, although I may not agree with all you have to say.

Bobby
Bobby

Tommy, I have something to say to you. You were right. I have my opinions of illegal immigration, formed from living in the disasterous state of California. I've seen what it's done. Having said that, you were right about my being to "strong", "insistent", I don't know maybe just a plain prick, in pushing my views. Shoot, I know the folks on this blog that live in Arizona must be sincere in what they believe. So, like a while back, I'm going to tone it down, or just take off for another six months like I did before coming back a few weeks ago. What I honestly wish for, is that this issue doesn't destroy this country, which I'm afraid is a real possiblity, and I'm not about to lay the fault at the feet of the American taxpaying public, that has enough problems. Anyway, thanks for making me see my lack of balance. P.S. This is not to say I take back any of my views. My views were formed by observing what's going on and living it for a long time. There not "off the cuff." So thanks again, for being patient with me. Good luck to you and yours---Bobby.

Mr. Lemons, this would be a very good time to alert DPS (Arizona Crime Information Center) and the FBI (National Crime Information Center) regarding ANY AND ALL computer searches on the name and date of birth of Mr. Lewis. I am anticipating someone at our senate level of state government might have searches conducted through the senate security or DPS, ostensibly for 'security' reasons to ensure that Mr. Lewis might not be a threat to someone working in the senate building.

ANY search on Mr. Lewis, using ACIC and/or NCIC, at this time, is very likely illegal and could be prosecuted.

Just a 'heads up' simply because I think it's what they will do.

Jason

Well well. We now have a challenger to mentally sick Pearce.

Let's now hope that Pearce hasn't learned any of his buddy the Flaccid Fool of MCSO's election tricks.

Tommy Collins

Jason, you can rest assured anything that pearce doesn't know of today, his advisers will certainly come up with every sleazy angle they can, legal or not. Let's not forget the SCA video campaign that Pullen and the Flaccid Fool of MCSO came up with. They ARE capable of anything and their skills at corruption are unparalleled.

Native Guns

T.C. I doubt those sleazy smear ad tactics will win the Mormon's heart. If you know what I mean. Most Mormons are kind and compassionate people. They are easily turned off by anything remotely vile as seen in the arpaio ads of Dan Saban.

Therefore, ru$$ell pearce may already know this. Lets not forget that he himself is (an inactive) Mormon. As the Feathered Bastard noted in the other article where ru$$ell pearce submitted his letter(linked by "Ross"). He may take up a more "subdued tone". He's dealing with mostly the Mormon vote in LD18. It will be a tough battle. But an exciting one.

Let the games begin.

Jason
Jason

Exactly my point. The FF of MCSO has been using sleazy campaign ads. Pearce has presumably been watching his hero and mentor the MCSO shurf. So now we wait and see how low Pearce can go regarding his campaign. We already know what the Joker is capable of.

I'm overjoyed that this fellow Jerry Lewis has emerged to take on the challenge.  ANYBODY but Pearce.  Hadn't thought about Claudia,  who I think would make an excellent state legislator, knows the ropes, is very dedicated to public service and isn't a mudslinger.

Problem is, with her eight years on the city council, Pearce would be in his typical attack mode, picking away with a vengeance at various things she voted for.  Plus her candidacy would bring out the closet sexists.  (She was unopposed as I recall for her second council term.)  Also,  I'm pretty sure Pearce had a temper tantrum, claiming that former Mesa PD chief George Gascon -- a real pro in law enforcement who did a helluva lot with innovative methods to reduce crime here -- was bad, and either wanted Gascon fired or the supportive city council fired.  Lewis doesn't have any political "baggage" which is good for somebody running against the recalled Pearce.

Vic
Vic

I can't remember if Claudia is in LD18 though.  Anyone know?

My only fear is that there will be more challengers to split the vote.  We need only one to run against him and win.  I fear that somewhere, Pearce will have an idiot distant relative that he will throw in the ring to try and split that vote.  This is the same spoiler, dirty trick practice that we have seen in in recent elections.  No doubt in my mind that Pearce is racking his brain for a dirty tactic rather than getting out and campaigning well.  It's the way he rolls.

Tina
Tina

Yes, she does live in LD18 in the subdivision behind HoHoKam stadium.  I think all of Mesa city council district one is in LD18.  If Lewis does announce his candidacy next week, I doubt if Claudia would also run and split the vote.  But I too think that Pearce must be racking his brain to dream up a dirty trick tactic.

Lol. The Feathered Bastard cracked me up with those bashing of Howdy Fischer screeds of his. But he is right however, Howdy Fischer is as dumb as they come.......hey they're from the lunatic fringed.

Jerry Lewis seems like the ideal candidate. I believe he's got a clean slate with no skeletons in his closet. I believe he will be a formidable foe of pearce.

As always, this is a good article F-Bastard.
