Jackie Robinson's Daughter To Wear Somos America's White-Ribbon

whiteribbon.jpg
Somos America's white-ribbon campaign has garnered the support of Jackie Robinson's daughter.

Somos America, a Phoenix-based pro-immigrant group, has gained the first high-profile name for its white-ribbon campaign, which encourages players and fans to don a symbol of opposition to Senate Bill 1070 during Tuesday's Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Chase Field.

Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon, who will be at the All-Star Game, plans to wear one of Somos' white ribbons in protest of Arizona's breathing-while-brown law. This, because she is "totally opposed to the legislation," she explained to the New York Times.

Robinson's participation is significant because her father was the first African-American to break the color line and play in the major leagues, helping to end segregation in the sport.

Also, famed civil rights leader Jesse Jackson is urging All-Star players to speak out against Arizona's immigration law.

"I think they should play, and they should speak out, which would be of value," Reverend Jackson told the Associated Press.

After Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 into law many pro-immigrant groups petitioned MLB commissioner Bud Selig to move the game.

When Selig refused to change the venue, some groups urged fans to boycott the Midsummer Classic.

Somos America was one of those groups that initially planned to boycott the event. But it has recently switched tactics and is now asking All-Stars and baseball enthusiasts to wear a white ribbon instead.

Puente, a local human-rights group, has stayed with the boycott plan and will be demonstrating during the game.

"We're preparing for the big show," Sal Reza told New Times.

Somos America member Leticia de la Vara says her organization has not confirmed if any of the actual All-Stars will wear a white ribbon.

"What we've been told by the [MLB] Players Association that the ball players are free to make whatever statement they want to [regarding] 1070," she explained.

If any of the players wear the ribbon or skip the game, it will be a major PR victory for pro-immigrant activists. Only Tuesday will tell.

A ray of light leaving our sun now, or a radio signal carrying the Gospel, will never reach that world of sea-worms until an immensity of aeons pass. All Illegal aliens should be allowed to apply for work permits but only while they are outside the United States in their home countries.   This type of program (guest workers) has worked very well for many years in economically successful places such as Switzerland, Singapore to name a few. Once their work visa expires they must immediately leave the country. If the females become prgnant, they are immediately returned to their home country. commit any violation of ANY law (even "J" walking)  and they are deported. If they attempt to re-enter the US illegaly, they are automatically placed on a list of permanently banned from entry into the US. Are you with us?Just enforce the Immigration Laws and treat all people who want to enter the US fairly. Don't show preference to those that entered illegally. Justice for all?

Is this law Racist? Does it specify brown people? Are the people who agree with this law racist? Are those who want this law enforced racist? The law says nothing of little "brown" people but it explains what is illegal entry. It's not very hard to understand. Why is this law "broken"? Why can it be selectively ignored?Illegal alien includes all people who entered illegally, could be Croation, Russian, Chinese, Irish, Canadians and yes even Mexicans. No one single race or people is referenced in the law. Under Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code, "Improper Entry by Alien," any citizen of any country other than the United States who:Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers; or Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact; has committed a federal crime.Violations are punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment for up to six months. Repeat offenses can bring up to two years in prison. Additional civil fines may be imposed at the discretion of immigration judges, but civil fines do not negate the criminal sanctions or nature of the offense.

I find it funny they are protesting something that isn't even taking full effect. Has anyone actually been arrested under 1070? Also, if it is such a bad law and if the feelings of Arizona Residents are that of pure racism, why do immigration laws on the ballot keep getting passed and the people who support them keep getting elected? Is it because the people who don't like it either don't vote, can't vote (do to immigration status or a felony) or are not even from Arizona???? if any of those are true, than they have no right to vote anyway and if they are illegal aliens, than they really have zero say in our democratic process...

The shit is going to keep getting passed, and the same people are going to keep getting elected becouse the majority of the voter in Arizona want it... If you don't like it, Vote it out... If you can't find enough support to vote it out, than that means you are not in the majority and guess what, in a voting world, majority rules..

Why are we spending so much time on so few protesters when there are much more important things going on in this country right now? The majority of this country (well at least legal voters and legal residents) want stronger immigration laws and enforcement against illegal aliens. It's a fact, proven and stamped in the majority of local elections across the country.

I think it's important for the daughter of the first Black man to play baseball professionally to be at the All Star Game. She's not really high profile, but her father's achievements are high profile.

RetiredArmy

This is good news and good for her. I actually got to meet her father when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Of course I was only three years old so the encounter is a little hazy but his signature on the team ball is still as clear as can be.

Jackie Robinson's daughter is high profile name? You're kidding, right? Is that how desperate the boycott movement has become, that you write an article about an non-celebrity who happened to have a famous father?

Puente and allies have failed. The All Star game is still slated to come to Arizona. Deportations are up. Illegals are fleeing Arizona and there hasn't been any movement on immigration reform. All the while border security has grown in manpower and budget. You have nothing to show for your efforts. You don't have the support of the American people.

I gotta give Somos America some credit for changing it's tactics and for not retorting to extreme racist "La Raza" style antics.

These unprecedented boycotts by Sal Reza and his group is egregious. They say Sal Reza is a descendent of an Apache Tribe. Yet, it's a shame he's lost some sense of identity along the way, by wallowing into radical "La Raza" escapades.  I'm disappointed in him.

Know the facts

Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada, 542 U.S. 177 (2004)

This Supreme Court Ruling allows the requesting of Identification from Law Enforcement. And the Arizona Law is in line with the ruling, that it does not violate you 4th or 5th Amendment Rights.

Like the Arizona Law it states, that Police can ask you to provide Identification to prove who you are, this is known as a "Stop & Identify Law".

There are currently 26 states that have "Stop & Identify Law".Alabama Ala. Code §15-5-30Arizona Ari. Rev. Stat. Tit. 13, §2412 (enacted 2005)Arkansas Ark. Code Ann. §5-71-213(a)(1)Colorado Colo. Rev. Just so you know, "La Raza" means "the people."

You see, that's because Latinos are whites (hint, Spain is in Europe).  Hispanic isn't a race. It's an ethnicity. You know, like Italians.

Guesty

Of those you list, only four states’ laws (Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, and Ohio) explicitly impose an obligation to provide identifying information.

Fifteen states grant police authority to ask questions, with varying wording, but do not explicitly impose an obligation to respond:

In five states (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island), failure to identify oneself is one factor to be considered in a decision to arrest. In all but Rhode Island, the consideration arises in the context of loitering or prowling.

Six states (Arizona, Florida, Indiana, New Mexico, Ohio, and Vermont) explicitly impose a criminal penalty for noncompliance with the obligation to identify oneself.

As of February 2011, the validity of a law requiring that a person detained provide anything more than state her name has not come before the U.S. Supreme Court.Next time you cut and paste from Wikipedia, do a better job.

Kcarson
Kcarson

You are being a little misleading here - unwittingly I am sure.

Hiibel stands for the proposition that a person can be asked to identify themselves.  It does not stand for the proposition that a person can be compelled to provide a form of identification.

Hiibel is about a law requiring a declaration, under penalty of law for false information. The court viewed it as the natural extension of the police right to ask the name of a person detained in a Terry Stop.

"The request for identity has an immediate relation to the purpose, rationale, and practical demands of a Terry stop. The threat of criminal sanction helps ensure that the request for identity does not become a legal nullity."

Further, you fail to discuss this important bit of unresolved law from Hiibel:

“Still, a case may arise where there is a substantial allegation that furnishing identity at the time of a stop would have given the police a link in the chain of evidence needed to convict the individual of a separate offense. In that case, the court can then consider whether the privilege applies, and, if the Fifth Amendment has been violated, what remedy must follow. We need not resolve those questions here.″ — 542 U.S. 177, at 191.

And therein lies the SB1070 rub.  The demand for immigration status and documentation may exceed the breadth of Terry and the scope of Hiibel.

The only group being un-American are those opposed to allowing for the peaceful resolution to this unclear area of law.  However, even if it were well-settled law, the peaceful appeal to the judiciary is ALWAYS pro-American. It is the hallmark of our enduring republic that we may always seek to undue inequity.

I don't think the argument has ever being about whether or not the police can ask you for id, but rather the kind of id and when.  Also, what makes local police immigration officers/experts to know when someone is illegal or not, simply because of the id they hold.

And the only thing in common in that "ethnicity"  of Hispanic is that the members speak Spanish.  See the conservative whack-jobs are so used to using reverse meaning words (e.g., war is peace, etc.) that they just use a term they don't understand to denigrate that "type" of person they don't like - BROWN.  It is the indigenous part of Hispanic they don't like.  They are so proud that their white ancestors illegally invaded this country, murdered the native people here and stole their land that they would be really pissed if it came to pass (in a 1000 years) that the indigenous people took back their land, culture and property from the white invaders.  With the US Constitution in its present form, this take back is likely and all legal.  I recommend to all my indineous brothers and sisters to GET BUSY making babies, re-learning your culture(s) and teaching as many other people about how life USED to be lived on this continent before the white man fucked it up.  Self-reliance, small group decision making, everyone knowing a common language (hand language) and a religion that was based on the rhythms and knowledge of nature, not some imaginary man in the sky.

You miss the point Sir Francis. It was essentially ruled that the states have every right to control illegal immigration, by holding and turning over illegal aliens to the Feds. That's different from being able to deport them. It's not the states fault that the Feds are in violation of their sworn duty to follow U.S. immigration law, which is crystal clear. Title 8, Section, 1325, U.S. immigration law code.etc.

I don't know what an illegal immigrant looks like, because they come from all nations. This blog is mainly concerned with the southern border. People fly in and stay illegally from around the world, etc. Some Canadians are here without premisiion, etc. As for how do American Indians look, I think a lot of people see common characteristics that indicate what North American Indians look like, eve though there's a lot of different tribes. I can tell an Irish face, pretty accurately, or and Italian, Indian from India. Let's not get completely carried away with political correctness on how different cultures look. There are common characteristics.

I'm sure you've heard the expression "I'll do what ever it takes to take care of my family," or a similar comment.  Well, that's what I see these folks doing.  These folks literally sacrifice their lives in the Arizona desert to get a job and to be able to support their families.  While you might repeat this expression when it's convenient for you, these folks are actually living it.

Bobby

Keith I never meant to imply that others didn't contribute. But European-Americans, for the most part, built modern America. The slaves did enrich Southern Slave owners, but only a tiny percent of Americans could own slaves. Many didn't even believe in slavery, like the Quakers, Menonites, etc. Today, a lot of other people are involved in rebuilding the U.S. But America was always known as an extension of Europe, for example, beer, pizza, pie, kindergarten, old customs from Europe,English language for more than two hundred years, religions, schools all designed basically the same barrack like way,(like military academies in Europe), a lot of European technology, etc.

Bobby
Bobby

And I apologize if I've called Mexican people names. I can only say that in all the blogs I've written involving immigration, I didn't use the kind of language that I've read on other posts which, like I said, is vile and uncalled for. I guess the issue's too big for people to come to some kind of mutual understanding in a civil way. Sick but true.

Keith
Keith

Bobby, in my last post I suggested you mightbe abusing meth or alcohol.  It was wrongof me to speculate (or to profile), and I apologize.  Except for your rant-ings, I have no basiswith which to form an opinion about you … my suspicions arose because many ofthe vocal, outwardly racist people I’ve come in personal contact with over mylong life have been hard-core alcoholics. But to automatically stereotype youas a substance abuser is wrong, and again I apologize.

Keith
Keith

And we've correctly pointed out time and time again that European-Americans did not by themselves build this country, that much of the hard work was done by slaves and people of color, and that your denial of the work non-whites have done and continue to do is in fact an expression of your racism, but you are just too dim and racist to get it. And in fact you are a liar when you say you don't call Mexican people names ... you've done it quite often in this column, fool.  I think the fact that you don't remember what you've written is most likely the result of alcohol or meth abuse.

Bobby
Bobby

Agreed. I could go to one of those Arizona newspapers that feature the folks that call Mexican people dirty, etc. and other vile crap, like others do to get their jollies. But I don't like that kind of stuff. I'd rather debate with the other side. I've stated to some of the folks here that European-Americans built this whole country.etc. They immediately took this as proof of my racism. Too bad for them. Truth is, there are whites, anglos, Europeans, whatever you'd like to call them, THAT I WOULDN'T GIVE THE TIME OF DAY TO. But that's another story, and none of these folks would get it anyway. Peace.

DeadMan Walking
DeadMan Walking

That's part of the problem.. When they have no facts to back up what they say, they have to fall back to inults. And guess what, Opinion doesn't win in a fact based society..

One thing your'e right about. No one can "fool" the open borders, Mexican Nationalists at heart jokers on this blog. I realize that. But that's only because you believe someone's trying to "fool" you. I get accused by people like Mikefrombisbee and others of not wanting to have a serious debate. But how can I? The first reaction they always have is not to debate me back, but to throw insults at me when they disagree.on something I've written.
