MLB All-Star Game Fans Confronted by SB 1070 Protesters

The scene outside Chase Field Tuesday...

Members of the human-rights group Puente greeted sports fans with anti-Senate Bill 1070 chants and signs outside Chase Field Tuesday, as the Major League Baseball All-Star Game got under way.

About 100 protesters from Puente demonstrated against Arizona's immigration law while baseball enthusiasts filed into the stadium.

"In Arizona there is daily separation of families," said Puente leader Sal Reza. "Things are not as beautiful as [All-Star Game promoters] want to say."

Reza said that's the message out-of-state fans should take back home from what he called "Arizona's police state."

Puente had been urging a boycott of the midsummer classic, asking fans and players not to attend. The activist group insists SB 1070 is racist and hurts the state's economy. Its members believe a general boycott of Arizona is the best way to show disapproval of the law.

(Check out a slideshow of Tuesday's demonstration circus by photographer Kholood Eid, here.)

Last year, national pro-immigrant groups were on board with Puente, demanding MLB move the game out of Arizona. But MLB did not do so.

Since an outright boycott the game seemed unrealistic to some, Somos America, a Phoenix-based immigrants-rights group, asked fans and All-Stars to wear a white ribbon in opposition to anti-immigrant laws like 1070.

"SB 1070 is the symbol for hate-based legislation," said Somos member Letice de la Vara. "We've seen copycat laws around the country so this is still an issue that can affect [out-of-state fans] in their states. It's important to voice [our] objections to it."

Inside the All-Star Game, however, not a single player wore the white ribbon, and precious few fans were seen sporting it.

Some speculated that Adrian Gonzalez, the Boston Red Sox's first baseman, might don the ribbon because of his remarks against 1070 last year.

At that time, he said he would boycott the game if held in Arizona, but he took the field yesterday, and was not wearing the ribbon.

About a dozen counter-protesters gathered outside the stadium. There, well-known Phoenix nativist Barb Heller handed out red-white-and-blue ribbons in direct opposition to Somos' campaign.

"[Puente and Somos America are] trying to make it into a race issue, but it's never been a race issue," said Heller as she was offering ribbons to game-goers, a sign supporting Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in one hand.

Some fans expressed disapproval with the protesters and counter-protesters, while others ignored the demonstrators altogether.

The protests and counter-protests, though spirited, achieved little, other than the occasional heated dialogue between fans and demonstrators.

Which, perhaps, is better than nothing.

""In Arizona there is daily separation of families," said Puente leader Sal Reza."  Whose fault is that? The men and woman following the laws of our country or the ones that want everything given to them while they continue to break the law every day??? Stop blaming others for ones own problem.

Let me rap my head around that for a while.

I am a US citizen, have lived in many other countries for my job, and not once did I ever complain about having to follow THEIR laws. I respected THEIR cultures. I learned THEIR language (I know, wild concept right?). I didn't live in a neighborhood full of Americans, I lived in a neighborhood of locals. I didn't demand they change to accommodate me, I learned their ways.

I am now back in the US and live in Arizona, and have spent the last year doing the paperwork for my fiance's visa (the LEGAL way). Obviously I am NOT a racist who hates immigrants, since she IS an immigrant. I do however despise people that attempt to demonize those of us that expect you to follow the same rules as the rest of us. NO ONE has the right to break the laws of a country because they don't like them.

America is a great country because of immigrants.......immigrants who respected and loved this country. Not the trash flowing across the border now.

SB1070 is not a racist bill. You can not be arrested for breathing, walking, being brown, or getting ice cream with your family (like our fearless leader claimed). Anyone who believes you can, is an IDIOT. Educate yourself before you spout off this nonsense, because it makes you look stupid. If I get pulled over, I too have to provide an ID. If I can not provide an ID, I will be held until they can determine who I am. If I am arrested, they will run my name and prints through the FBI database to make sure I am not a fugitive. These are all things to protect the Citizens of this country. SB1070 is not treating you any differently than us. If you want to come here and become an American legally, I support you 100%......WELCOME TO AMERICA!! I respect anyone who works hard to better their life and that of their family's. If you want to come here illegally, take advantage of our country, and call us 'racist' for wanting to protect the country we love.......then I'll enjoy watching you on the next episode of "Border Wars" getting deported.

Cplusmc23,

You state, "SB1070 is not a racist bill. You can not be arrested for breathing, walking, being brown, or getting ice cream with your family (like our fearless leader claimed). Anyone who believes you can, is an IDIOT. Educate yourself before you spout off this nonsense, because it makes you look stupid."

I gather from your post that you have been back in the US (Arizona) for a year or less after having lived in various foreign countries due to your job commitments.  Allow me to fill you in on what you missed or forgot regarding SB 1070. The bill, SB 1070,  that Brewer signed on Friday, April 23, 2010 (ARS 11051.B) began"For any lawful contact made by a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency of this state or a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency of a county, city, town or other political subdivision of this state where reasonable suspicion exists......"The national negative reaction to Arizona's immigration enforcement law occurred immediately and continued to grow in intensity. One week later Friday, April 30 Brewer signed an amended bill which changed that initial wording to,"For any STOP, DETENTION OR ARREST made by a law enforcement official or a law enforcement agency of this state IN THE ENFORCEMENT OF ANY OTHER LAW OR ORDINANCE OF A COUNTY, CITY OR TOWN OF THE STATE where reasonable suspicion exists......."Obama used the example about going out with your kid to get ice cream and getting harassed for papers in an informal address at a town hall meeting to the people of Ottumwa, Iowa on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 -- just FOUR DAYS after Brewer signed the original "police-can-do-anything" SB 1070. He knew exactly what was contained in that bill.

That portion of Obama's address in Ottumwa, Iowa is available on YouTube, and is part of his broader outlook to express the dire need for comprehensive immigration reform (using some general ideas he'd been thinking about) and that it has to be a bipartisan effort. If you're a fan of Karl Rove, you'll love the nasty and patent dishonesty he employs to try and discredit Obama in the June 21, 2010 issue of Newsweek. ("Reasoning Arizona" page 20)Rove refers to the APRIL 27 town hall meeting in Iowa (remember, the law's wording was changed on April 30) repeats the example Obama used (that the Arizona statute would open them up to being "harassed" when "you took your kid out to get ice cream"), then slams Obama all over the place by smugly repeating the LATER language in the law.Said Rove, "Even a quick reading of the statute shows that police can question someone about their immigration status only if three conditions are met. First, there has to have been a "lawful stop, detention or arrest" to enforce another law." "Obama willingly mischaracterizes the Arizona law because doing so benefits his party and himself."I'm appalled that Rove's flat-out lie, embellished to maliciously malign a person's character and credibility, got by the Newsweek editors.Recap:

4-23-10 Brewer signs SB 1070

4-27-10 Obama utters kid-out-for-ice-cream

example

4-30-10 SB 1070 language amended to say "stop,

detention or arrest." Brewer signs

amendments.Despite its changed wording, that portion of SB 1070 was one of the four sections of the law that enjoined by the federal courts anyway. The SB 1070 wording in full states, "For any lawful stop, detention or arrest made by a law enforcement official where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is in the United States illegally, a reasonable attempt must be made, when practicable, to determine the person's immigration status, except if the determination hinders or obstructs an investigation."The court's ruling stated that Federal resources would be "taxed and diverted from federal enforcement priorities as a result of the increase in requests for immigration-status determination" if this part of the law were enacted. That section of the law and its enforcement applies to you and your fiance if, for example, you are out jogging or riding your bikes sans drivers licenses or visas and, for whatever reason, are "stopped" by the police. Ah, but because there would be no "reasonable suspicion" about your "immigration status" to begin with, because you don't "look like" an illegal immigrant, you would not be harassed or booked, would you?

It's hard trying to just have some fun in todays U.S. when you're constantly harassed by radical Mexican groups and reconquistas all over the place. In Mexico an American would be arrested and removed from the in your face crap that these clowns pull. Screw them.

I salute these protesters for being true to their cause.  SB 1070 hasn't gone anywhere.  Simply because it is no longer on the front burner for media coverage doesn't make it any less dangerous.

If the organizers and volunteers that contributed to the recall of Pearce had adopted the same attitude as the new nay-sayers, Pearce would be sitting pretty and laughing at the rest of us.

Bobby

Not true. There are a lot of parts left in it that a Federal Court agreed can be enforced. Thank God the Supreme court has some sense left. For now.

Tommy Collins
Tommy Collins

Current federal and state law already provide all of the parts that are NOT enjoined in SB-1070. These laws have been on the books for many years and are routinely enforced on local, state, and federal levels as appropriate with criminal charges when a suspect is arrested and determined to be in the country illegally. This form of law enforcement has been in effect for at least the last forty years throughout the United States. The Supreme Court is NOT likely to even hear the appeal.

"it's never been a race issue," said Heller?"

Oh REALLY?!

What about the mantra of "La Raza" means "the race?"

What about "'illegal' isn't a race?"

Don't make me laugh.

Well, one way to look at it, was Hellers group at least didn't get violently attacked by the reconquistas, as has happened before, over and over and over in California and elsewhere throughout the nation during these American citizens vs. Mexican nationals and leftists standoffs.

Protests and marches are a tool of the old Left and accomplish very little or nothing.  The right uses legislation and the political process to accomplish its goals and is much more effective.  I don't think having a bunch of long haired hippy looking Latino's banging on drums and burning incense is going to change the hearts and minds of your average American voter when it comes to immigration.

Bobby
Bobby

And the left uses "the courts", over the will of the voters. These clowns are just small time.

Tommy Collins
Tommy Collins

I guess what these folks don't understand is that if they want the support of Joe Average voter in the United States they really need to recognize there is a saturation level at which point the protest becomes nothing more than background noise.

SB-1070 is currently in limbo and we are waiting to hear from the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) as to whether they will even hear arguments regarding Judge Bolton's ruling on the enjoined parts of SB-1070. In my opinion SCOTUS won't even hear the arguments and that will result in total castration of SB-1070 and similar laws in other states.

Thus, the saturation level has been reached and further 'protests' have minimal value, if any.

I think they would be better to think the issue through and save their efforts and resources for protestations or celebrations after SCOTUS announces its decision.

I noticed there was a public display of damnation by the bible thumpers at Chase Field about the same time. They were just as ineffective as the Puente protest.

Keep in mind my remarks are made by someone who supports the cause of immigration reform and fair and equal treatment of all persons.

I like Mr. Reza and admire his veracity, but he needs some guidance on when and where to apply his protests for them to be most productive.

Native Guns
Native Guns

Good post. I felt the same way, amid the insignificance from both sides(I was there at the game yesterday but did not noticed the "Bible Thumpers".) I find Reza's protests of America's greatest past time, more of distraction rather. I also noticed there wasn't too many wearing the "White Ribbon" shirts as noted by the Feathered Bastard in regards to Jackie Robinson's daughter.

I believe Reza should save face and focus his protest on his archenemy--the FF. He may galvanize more support base from the centrists/moderates and indies alike, rather than from the radical "La Raza" community per se. I don't follow his boycotting of our state. The reasons given, is if they were to send a message out to outsiders/tourist through firsthand observatories by coming here. His methods are just as destructive as neo-Nazi loving Pearce's bigoted business killing legistlatures.

Tommy, it not only becomes background noise, background noise can be tuned out, it becomes an in your face nuisance to most Americans. Screw them.

Speaking of in your face nuisance, that would have to be Shurf arPISSo. Whose  In your face antics such as having the mainstream media's cameras shoved in the ghastly face of the media whore.
