Phoenix DREAM Activists Will Attend D.C. Hearing on Immigration Proposal

From left to right: Angelica Hernandez, Debbie Robles and state Senator Steve Gallardo urge passage of the DREAM Act
Even though Angelica Hernandez graduated as valedictorian from Arizona State University's mechanical engineering school this past May, she won't be rewarded with a career or a good job. This, because she is an undocumented immigrant.

However, she will be recognized in U.S. Congress for her hard work.

Hernandez, along with another member of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, a group of undocumented students who advocate for legislation that would allow them to legalize their status, will attend the first-ever hearing for the DREAM Act this Tuesday in U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Members of ADAC announced the news during a press conference today in downtown Phoenix, outside the local office for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Hernandez told New Times that she was contacted by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin's staff and asked to attend the proceeding.

"Durbin will be sharing my story when he speaks [at the hearing]," she says. "[He] will also recognize me as an outstanding DREAMer."

Hernandez's story, first reported by New Times, quickly went viral and was picked up by several outlets. Her plight caught Durbin's eye, and he now plans to use her as an example of a student who would benefit from the passage of the DREAM Act.

This week New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez introduced an immigration reform bill in Congress to address the issue of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country.

As part of the package, he has included the DREAM Act, which would create an opportunity for illegal immigrants who came to this country as children to obtain permanent residency, as long as they continue onto college or military service.

"It's an honor to be able to represent Arizona in Washington D.C.," Hernandez said, ecstatically.

State Senator Steve Gallardo was also at the conference and applauded Congressional Democrats for the move.

"I want to commend Senator Durbin for the hearing," Gallardo said.

Gallardo also had a message for President Obama and Congress that it is time to pass legislation, because so far there's only been "lip service" paid to immigration reform.

"They need to step up to the plate and do their job," he pointed out.

Debbie Robles, president of ADAC, called on President Obama to stop deporting illegal immigrants who can benefit from the DREAM Act. She insists that it is urgent the president lobby for the legislation, as potential candidates are "aging out."

That's because the average age that's often been considered as the cutoff for beneficiaries of of the DREAM Act is 30.

Miguel Aparicio, 37, a Valley cross-country high school coach who recently was deported, could have benefited if the DREAM Act had become law years back, since he is also a college graduate.

Under current immigration law, he was not eligible to become a U.S. Citizen or legal resident.

DREAM Activists say Obama needs to take this opportunity to persuade Latinos that they still matters to his administration. Especially after he failed on his promise to pass immigration reform in his first year as president.

"The DREAM Act has been held hostage in a political game," Hernandez explains. "That's why we are going to Washington D.C. to be able to demand accountability for all the promises that have been [made] to [us DREAMers]."

I am very concerned about the illegal activities (Document Fraud, Identity Theft, Conducting crimes in America) that she is involved in. Please address the above issues as soon as possible.

Americans are really getting fed up with illegals. They are criminals and nothing else. Its a slap in the face to the immigrants who had waited in line , learned english and wanted to be a citizens. The illegals all they want to do is suck up tax payer money, protest and be criminals. This country has laws and I can tell you this. Conservatives are taking back the country and are going to work for the American Citizens not the illegals. Go back where you came from and take your illegal kids with you.

Here's a thought... have the members of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition go to this web site: http://travel.state.gov/visa/t... and apply for a student visa.  Then they can stay in the country without breaking the law and they may also be able to get a job when they graduate - different visa required.

What you can't do, however, is break the law just because you feel entitled to do so.  Anyone who wants to come here an be an American is welcome.  Anyone who comes here and wants waive the flag of another country, speak a different language and criticize the United States should go back where they came from.

No country on earth opresses Mexicans more than Mexico.  Mexicans who come here legaly excape opression and find equality of opportunity.  They are not, however, entitled to equality of outcome and they are not entitled to break our laws.

The Bill of Rights requires due process for the accused. It's not conditioned on citizenship or immigration status. It is simply how the authors of the constitution believed the government must behave.

And that's what this article is about- violation of due process.

Funny that those who claim to be "patriots" on this thread are the ones not offended by the Feds failure to adhere to the basic dictates of the Constitution.

I think THEY are the traitors.

Okay, I'm fine with a DREAM ACT ... but not if the border security situation is unresolved. Either set a target and provide resources to reduce all forms of unlawful borders crossings by 90% within a year's time or I say no. This is called Compromise. It is how America has worked so well for so long. Everybody gives a little to get a lot in return.

I want immigrants to stop dying in our deserts, stop being raped in Mexico, drowned in the All American Canal, kidnapped and robbed by smugglers.

I want drugs to not be so insanely easy to smuggle into the USA. I want the southern going flow of guns and money that has allowed the cartels to challenge the Mexican Army for power to end. I do not want to see a failed and lawless state rise along 2000 miles of America's border.

I want the Rule of Law respected.

Give me that, and I'll support some or perhaps quite a lot of what you want.

How 'bout it?

The Constitution says it's the Federal Governments job to protect the nation from invasion. Since it isn't doing that, and is instead facilitated by traitorous citizens in enabling illegal immigration, I would think this is a higher form of treason, than people who believe, quite rightly, that those that have entered this nation illegally, are owned nothing from Americans, but possibly, a safe trip back to where they came from.

Jason

How is denying a bunch of criminal illegals citizenship a due process violation?

The DREAM Act is a biased and racist law designed solely for the useless criminal illegals and would solely benefit the useless criminal illegals. That isn't how our laws work.

You need to wake the hell up Mistalee. You're asleep at the wheel.

Chris, listen to me. Don't think me arrogant. Americans are ruled by Wall Street and the Chambers of Commerce. Democracy is near dead. The left has done an enormous amount of damage to make this a reality. MOST of the objection, where illegal immigration and borders are concerned, comes from the democrat left. They want open borders, and they have no intention, EVER, of allowing a secure United States Border. I've explained it before Chris, to the lunkheads on this blog. It's about the North American Union with Canada, and Mexico. The goal is wage equalitzation. American tax payers are to finance their own ultimate poverty. The leftists on this blog, and folks like this Masha, Misatlee, Chad Snow, the loushow, and many others, are essentially anti-white, anti-Americans racists. Its' the message of every blog they write. They don't really care about this country or its citizens-at all.

Chris, if your'e fine with the Dream Act, put forward by traitors like Durbin, then you'd better be fine with Chain Migration, involving millions of people related to the Dreamers. Tratiors like Durbin, stuck Chain Migration into the bill. It's really another massive amnesty also..

Moche8
Moche8

Reagan also realized the reality of the situation.  He set an amnesty.  Too bad we do not have a guest worker program.  Georgia is feeling the pain of their anti undocumented worker laws.  Food rotting in the fields.  That is a FACT that Bobby and his racist minions will refuse to acknowledge.

Your'e a hundred and ten percent right Jason. The ONLY people that would benefit by the Dream Act are illegal aliens--AGAIN. As for Americans, THEY'D BE LEFT WITH THE NOW WELL KNOWN OBLIGATIONS THAT HAVE BANKRUPTED ONE AMERICAN STATE AFTER THE OTHER.

When growers plan their crops, they anticipate how much labor is available.  If there is going to be a shortage of labor, they plant carrots.  If there is going to be a surplus of labor, they plant strawberries.

The Spanish have been here longer than the British.  You are the one who thinks Plymouth Rock was the first white settlement.  It was not.  It was Tucson or Santa Fe.  You do not see that these people have been written out of the history books in the USA.

Can you imagine the Cowboy -the icon of the American West- with NO HORSE?  The history of the west would be entirely different if the Spanish had not brought horses here.  The feral horses we see today in Arizona are Spanish horses.  There was a protected herd of them in southern Arizona that are genetically identical to the Spanish horse.

You exist in history, Bobby,  I do not deny any fact of history including the Industrial Revolution and Manifest Destiny- where English genocide drove my NA ancestors to the brink of extinction. And I do not deny the heritage of my English and French ancestors in America.  I am a descendent of Emerson Etheridge (Tn.), the last Whig to serve in Congress.

But you all want to deny the very real and true history of the Spanish in America. I can only attribute this to blind bigotry.  Unfortunately the history you were taught in school was full of falsehoods.  You have some reading to do.

Bobby
Bobby

Robert, let it go because people like Shanon, I've found out a long time ago, feel entitled, are basically resentfull and bigoted towards whites. So when coming from that attitude, theywouldn't care if most Americans with a long time history here, who's families built this nation with sweat and blood during the Industrial Revolution, were run over by a truck. They have been taught an alternative history, by leftist professors and teachers, and you and I don't even exist in the history, except for killing Indians, slavery, etc.. That's how it is now Robert.

Moche8
Moche8

Then why do you all use racist language?  And why are you not protesting undocumented immigrants from Canada?  I have known at least two Canadians living and working in Arizona.  Why not protest all the other immigrants who are not following the rules?  You all focus exclusively on Latinos and Mexico. What does any speech from any group matter to you right here in America, the home of free speech?  Unless they are dangerous or infringe on the rights of others, it is protected speech.  I abhor the Westborough Baptist Church when they protest military funerals, the court ruled that their speech is protected!

If we continue to allow our immigration laws to be completely dysfunctional, and not accounting for the TRUE reality on the ground -  YES we need seasonal workers.  Yes.  Corporations are exploiting these people right here in the US.  And by extension they are exploiting all American workers.  Yes.  These Dream Act students should be given a break if it is the only home they have known and they meet high standards of excellence!

Do you know how much it would cost to round up 25 million people and deport them?  We would have to increase our security state to the point where it will affect EVERYONE.

The black market will get worse, violence will increase-as we see in the War on Drugs.  Now a swat team can break into your house and shoot you with no warrant.  They killed an INNOCENT  Iraqi VET in his home in Arizona!  Terrible!  Horrific!  You want to increase the power of government agencies like that?

And why deport any immigrant if they are married to an American citizen and has children?  It is ludicrous to take a taxpayer and family man or woman like this, put them in jail at taxpayer expense, go to trial at taxpayer expense, etc.  Some of these stories are just government gone amok!   And heartrending to boot.

I thought you 'conservative' wanted government out of peoples lives and want to cut government spending!  And I will say, if you do not see the connection of our broken and unfair immigration laws to our FOR PROFIT prison system, you need to do so.

It is the reason this problem will not be solved, and it is the reason we cannot have a medical model solution to the drug war.  Both of these things are connected.  After all, our government was just caught selling automatic weapons to the Mexican drug cartels.  They want this to go on as long as possible.  Profit for giant corporations and arms dealers who buy our politicians.

And then they fool people like you into being on the wrong side of the issue.

Robert

Bobby - thanks for pointing that out.  All Shanon needs to do is Google MEcha club and she'll see the truth for herself.  I grew up with these people and have been a mole in their racist organization at a time.  These people (MEchistas) are angry, proud, arrogant and down right cruel.  They scare the poo out of most people yet the universities can't shut them down without being called "racist" - imagine that.

Robert
Robert

Shanon - you just will never get it - It's not the "color" of a person's skin that we Americans object to... It's the color of their FLAG.   It's not a matter of White Vs. Brown.  It's a matter of Red/White/Blue vs. Red/White/Green.  Many of my closest friends are Hispanic.  I love them dearly but...If you ask them who they are they always proudly say "Im Mexican" with one exception... when crossing the border back into the United States.  That's the one and only time they will finally say "Im an American" If you ask them who they are they always proudly say "Im Mexican" with one exception... when crossing the border back into the United States.  That's the one and only time they will finally say "Im an American"

Shanon, even though we disagree about a lot of  things happening in this country, I think your'e a good debater and I respect you. Besides, we have free speech and freedom of association in this nation.  I do not like the KKK or the Neo Nazis or white racists of any sort.  Does not mean I can shut them down or deny them their rights.

I'm as American as apple pie little girl. I suggest you enlist your sorry ass in the military and go over to Afghanistan. When you get shot by the Taliban and Al-Qaida, come back and tell me who's un-American.

A "guest workers program" was what Reagan promoted in the 1980's. Didn't work out too well did it? All it did was create more issues.

Actually I am quite a happy individual. I'm ignorant? Why? Because I don't support the useless criminal illegals vacuuming up jobs that Americans so direly need? Do you want the recession to continue infinitely? I sure as hell don't and I want to see people back at work.

Immigrants didn't build this nation from the ground up. Americans did.

No, they found out even prisoners are not as good working the fields.  Most people quit the job after less than one day.  You dont think a guest worker program may help American farmers?  Because no one want these jobs, and they cannot work properly when they try these jobs.  So sad to be you, Jason.  So little, so ignorant, so anti-American.  Immigrants built this nation from the ground up.

Jason
Jason

What about the farmers themselves? Are they so unwilling to promote hard work that they need illegals?

What stupidity. Again, Americans built this whole nation, including grew all the food needed to feed it. What stupidness you believe.

Moche8
Moche8

No, you are wrong.  The reason Germany is doing so well (#2 exporter in the world, highest labor cost in the world)  Is this:

LABOR is RESPECTED. Labor sits on the Board of Directors of every Corporation.Labor and Capital have an AMICABLE RELATIONSHIP.

That is why Gemany is thriving.  They are the LEADERS IN GREEN TECHNOLOGY.  And will kick our asses in the future Global Economy.  They already are.  The last two solar plants in Arizona and Nevada are  being made in Germany.

Moche8
Moche8

NO, you are wrong.  WE WANT A GUEST WORKER PROGRAM.   But the freakin' GOP WILL NOT ALLOW.  You do not even know what your ideology demands.

No immigration solution, no legislation: just keep letting these giant corporations rip off the poorest of the poor and drive down labor costs here, give money to the for profit prisons and KEEP these people "illegal". No guest worker programs to keep these people legal- if they are legal corporations and for profit prisons cannot keep on exploiting them and denying their HUMAN RIGHTS.

That is EXACTLY what the GOP and TeaParty want.  It is RIDICULOUS..

That is the the LIE you live.

Bobby
Bobby

No, wrong again. There is no American, that wants, fair pay, decent work conditions, and a few other human amenities, that will do those jobs. But illegal aliens will do all kinds of things that Americans fought against a long time ago. You and your ilk, are dragging the country back to that time.j

Bobby
Bobby

The so called shortage of labor(slave wages) is not real. It's created by greedy people. In case you haven't noticed, Americans don't really want to work for peanuts, but people like you would have them penniless.

Bobby
Bobby

Correct. The difference is this. Unlike the guest worker programs of the European nations, where workers have to return to their home nations when their work visa is over, they don't have to here, because people like you don't care. In Switzerland for example, when guest workers work visa expires, they must return home and again. But in the U.S. people like you want these people here permanently, to suck all the social services and other things away that Americans paid into . Most Americans do not want a nation, that will become hispanicized, and have Mexico,(one of the most corrupt nations in the world) be allowed to dictate to Americans. Something they have a habit of constantly doing. Screw those corrupt a-holes that are even more corrupt than our politicians.

Moche8
Moche8

What dont you understand about this?  There is no one else who can do the job or even willing to do these jobs.....you eat food picked by undocumented workers every day.  You should be on your knees thanking them.

"In Germany, the Germans love white asparagus, but no German wants to do the heavy labor involved in growing it."

That's why the German economy is perhaps the strongest and most flourishing in all of Europe. The Germans apparently have more brain cells than to hire the criminal illegals.

Portugal is accepting a $115 billion bailout.Greece has been bailed out. Ireland is being bailed out.

Wake up. It is the fault of the useless criminal illegals.

Jason
Jason

That's the price those farmers pay for hiring the criminal illegals.

Moche8
Moche8

A little over a month ago, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal (left) signedHB 87, an Arizona-like immigration law. The law was designed to drive illegal immigrants out of Georgia, and now state officials are shocked that it worked!

The resulting labor shortage has meant that millions of dollars of unharvested blueberries, onions, and other crops will be left rotting in the fields. Since many farmers live harvest-to-harvest, the loss of one crop could mean the loss of their farm.

Moche8
Moche8

You obviously know nothing about farming or growing food.

Growers grow the crops that are suitable for their soil, that they can make a profit from, and they rotate crops.  Some farmers plant both strawberries and carrots- and any mixture of early and late season vegetables, fruits and berries.

Some crops are perennial, like strawberries, meaning they are not planted every year.  The previous year planting will keep producing.  Some have to be planted by seed, like carrots, and can be planted both late and early.

In Germany, the Germans love white asparagus, but no German wants to do the heavy labor involved in growing it.  (One has to keep the plants buried as they grow, it is very labor intensive)  So each year they give Polish people work permits to come over and tend this crop, among others.

If the Germans can do this so can the USA.  It only takes rational, political will. And people who are not bigots to make good decisions about labor issues.
