Phoenix DREAM Activists Will Attend D.C. Hearing on Immigration Proposal

From left to right: Angelica Hernandez, Debbie Robles and state Senator Steve Gallardo urge passage of the DREAM Act
Even though Angelica Hernandez graduated as valedictorian from Arizona State University's mechanical engineering school this past May, she won't be rewarded with a career or a good job. This, because she is an undocumented immigrant.

However, she will be recognized in U.S. Congress for her hard work.

Hernandez, along with another member of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, a group of undocumented students who advocate for legislation that would allow them to legalize their status, will attend the first-ever hearing for the DREAM Act this Tuesday in U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Members of ADAC announced the news during a press conference today in downtown Phoenix, outside the local office for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Hernandez told New Times that she was contacted by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin's staff and asked to attend the proceeding.

"Durbin will be sharing my story when he speaks [at the hearing]," she says. "[He] will also recognize me as an outstanding DREAMer."

Hernandez's story, first reported by New Times, quickly went viral and was picked up by several outlets. Her plight caught Durbin's eye, and he now plans to use her as an example of a student who would benefit from the passage of the DREAM Act.

This week New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez introduced an immigration reform bill in Congress to address the issue of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country.

As part of the package, he has included the DREAM Act, which would create an opportunity for illegal immigrants who came to this country as children to obtain permanent residency, as long as they continue onto college or military service.

"It's an honor to be able to represent Arizona in Washington D.C.," Hernandez said, ecstatically.

State Senator Steve Gallardo was also at the conference and applauded Congressional Democrats for the move.

"I want to commend Senator Durbin for the hearing," Gallardo said.

Gallardo also had a message for President Obama and Congress that it is time to pass legislation, because so far there's only been "lip service" paid to immigration reform.

"They need to step up to the plate and do their job," he pointed out.

Debbie Robles, president of ADAC, called on President Obama to stop deporting illegal immigrants who can benefit from the DREAM Act. She insists that it is urgent the president lobby for the legislation, as potential candidates are "aging out."

That's because the average age that's often been considered as the cutoff for beneficiaries of of the DREAM Act is 30.

Miguel Aparicio, 37, a Valley cross-country high school coach who recently was deported, could have benefited if the DREAM Act had become law years back, since he is also a college graduate.

Under current immigration law, he was not eligible to become a U.S. Citizen or legal resident.

DREAM Activists say Obama needs to take this opportunity to persuade Latinos that they still matters to his administration. Especially after he failed on his promise to pass immigration reform in his first year as president.

"The DREAM Act has been held hostage in a political game," Hernandez explains. "That's why we are going to Washington D.C. to be able to demand accountability for all the promises that have been [made] to [us DREAMers]."

I am very concerned about the illegal activities (Document Fraud, Identity Theft, Conducting crimes in America) that she is involved in. Please address the above issues as soon as possible.

Americans are really getting fed up with illegals. They are criminals and nothing else. Its a slap in the face to the immigrants who had waited in line , learned english and wanted to be a citizens. The illegals all they want to do is suck up tax payer money, protest and be criminals. This country has laws and I can tell you this. Conservatives are taking back the country and are going to work for the American Citizens not the illegals. Go back where you came from and take your illegal kids with you.

Wow, way to be racist, buddy.  The white blight is here.

Moche8

The Spanish have been here longer than the British.  You are the one who thinks Plymouth Rock was the first white settlement.  It was not.  It was Tucson or Santa Fe.  You do not see that these people have been written out of the history books in the USA.

Can you imagine the Cowboy -the icon of the American West- with NO HORSE?  The history of the west would be entirely different if the Spanish had not brought horses here.  The feral horses we see today in Arizona are Spanish horses.  There was a protected herd of them in southern Arizona that are genetically identical to the Spanish horse.

You exist in history, Bobby,  I do not deny any fact of history including the Industrial Revolution and Manifest Destiny- where English genocide drove my NA ancestors to the brink of extinction. And I do not deny the heritage of my English and French ancestors in America.  I am a descendent of Emerson Etheridge (Tn.), the last Whig to serve in Congress.

But you all want to deny the very real and true history of the Spanish in America. I can only attribute this to blind bigotry.  Unfortunately the history you were taught in school was full of falsehoods.  You have some reading to do.

Robert, let it go because people like Shanon, I've found out a long time ago, feel entitled, are basically resentfull and bigoted towards whites. So when coming from that attitude, theywouldn't care if most Americans with a long time history here, who's families built this nation with sweat and blood during the Industrial Revolution, were run over by a truck. They have been taught an alternative history, by leftist professors and teachers, and you and I don't even exist in the history, except for killing Indians, slavery, etc.. That's how it is now Robert.

Then why do you all use racist language?  And why are you not protesting undocumented immigrants from Canada?  I have known at least two Canadians living and working in Arizona.  Why not protest all the other immigrants who are not following the rules?  You all focus exclusively on Latinos and Mexico. What does any speech from any group matter to you right here in America, the home of free speech?  Unless they are dangerous or infringe on the rights of others, it is protected speech.  I abhor the Westborough Baptist Church when they protest military funerals, the court ruled that their speech is protected!

If we continue to allow our immigration laws to be completely dysfunctional, and not accounting for the TRUE reality on the ground -  YES we need seasonal workers.  Yes.  Corporations are exploiting these people right here in the US.  And by extension they are exploiting all American workers.  Yes.  These Dream Act students should be given a break if it is the only home they have known and they meet high standards of excellence!

Do you know how much it would cost to round up 25 million people and deport them?  We would have to increase our security state to the point where it will affect EVERYONE.

The black market will get worse, violence will increase-as we see in the War on Drugs.  Now a swat team can break into your house and shoot you with no warrant.  They killed an INNOCENT  Iraqi VET in his home in Arizona!  Terrible!  Horrific!  You want to increase the power of government agencies like that?

And why deport any immigrant if they are married to an American citizen and has children?  It is ludicrous to take a taxpayer and family man or woman like this, put them in jail at taxpayer expense, go to trial at taxpayer expense, etc.  Some of these stories are just government gone amok!   And heartrending to boot.

I thought you 'conservative' wanted government out of peoples lives and want to cut government spending!  And I will say, if you do not see the connection of our broken and unfair immigration laws to our FOR PROFIT prison system, you need to do so.

It is the reason this problem will not be solved, and it is the reason we cannot have a medical model solution to the drug war.  Both of these things are connected.  After all, our government was just caught selling automatic weapons to the Mexican drug cartels.  They want this to go on as long as possible.  Profit for giant corporations and arms dealers who buy our politicians.

And then they fool people like you into being on the wrong side of the issue.

Bobby - thanks for pointing that out.  All Shanon needs to do is Google MEcha club and she'll see the truth for herself.  I grew up with these people and have been a mole in their racist organization at a time.  These people (MEchistas) are angry, proud, arrogant and down right cruel.  They scare the poo out of most people yet the universities can't shut them down without being called "racist" - imagine that.

Shanon - you just will never get it - It's not the "color" of a person's skin that we Americans object to... It's the color of their FLAG.   It's not a matter of White Vs. Brown.  It's a matter of Red/White/Blue vs. Red/White/Green.  Many of my closest friends are Hispanic.  I love them dearly but...If you ask them who they are they always proudly say "Im Mexican" with one exception... when crossing the border back into the United States.  That's the one and only time they will finally say "Im an American" If you ask them who they are they always proudly say "Im Mexican" with one exception... when crossing the border back into the United States.  That's the one and only time they will finally say "Im an American"

Shanon, even though we disagree about a lot of  things happening in this country, I think your'e a good debater and I respect you. You and I are not going to solve the immigration issues of the U.S. All I can say is that I hope things work out well for you in life and you try and have some fun. It's all too short.

American Patrol, is not a radical website. Regardless of what the owner of the sight does or does not believe, he simply posts stories from newspapers around the United States. If you don't like the content of those stories, that doesn't make the website racist.

Besides, we have free speech and freedom of association in this nation.  I do not like the KKK or the Neo Nazis or white racists of any sort.  Does not mean I can shut them down or deny them their rights.

America even gives the 'Tan Klan' a right to say whatever they please.  If you do not like that, then you do not understand our nation at all.

Robert did not document a damn thing.  The link to ASU does not work.  The only doc he has is to a radical right wing web site.  That is not an objective source.  Until he comes up with the ASU source, he is a LIAR.

the Tan Klan?  White Blight is the only response to that sort of racism.

Bobby

Robert documented what he said, showing the utter racism of so many hispanice"human Rights" groups, and you proved you agree with them by mentioning "white blight". Case closed Shanon.

Here's a thought... have the members of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition go to this web site: http://travel.state.gov/visa/t... and apply for a student visa.  Then they can stay in the country without breaking the law and they may also be able to get a job when they graduate - different visa required.

What you can't do, however, is break the law just because you feel entitled to do so.  Anyone who wants to come here an be an American is welcome.  Anyone who comes here and wants waive the flag of another country, speak a different language and criticize the United States should go back where they came from.

No country on earth opresses Mexicans more than Mexico.  Mexicans who come here legaly excape opression and find equality of opportunity.  They are not, however, entitled to equality of outcome and they are not entitled to break our laws.
