Russell Pearce Slammed for Opposing Unemployment Extension

Randy Parraz at a press conference explaining that Senator Russell Pearce should be recalled because he has not shown leadership for the unemployed people of Arizona.

A few women at the state Capitol invited Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce into their daily lives to show him what a few hundred dollars a week from unemployment benefits can buy.

Carla Mannes, one of the women at a press conference held by Citizens for a Better Arizona, explained that a $240 unemployment check is spent on bills and necessities such as gas. Yet she can't afford state health care insurance such as AHCCCS, because she makes too much money.

Members of the group, who also have successfully filed signatures in support of a recall election for Pearce, held the press conference to explain that the recall effort is much more vital now because the senator is expected to vote against the extension.

Governor Jan Brewer called a special session of the Legislature to approve an extension of unemployment benefits, which the federal government approved in March. Local state lawmakers didn't vote on an extension during the regular session.

"I think (Pearce) is man who sold himself on a platform of leadership, but has turned into a dictator," said Mannes, who says she lost her job in 2009 and has since depended on a $240 weekly unemployment check.

Mannes is part of the 9.3 percent unemployment rate in Arizona. She complained that taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for the Legislature to be in session an extra day when a high percentage of the population doesn't have a job. What makes her even madder is that Pearce has called the benefits an incentive to stay home and not work.

Randy Parraz, co-founder of the recall group, says that Pearce "has failed to show leadership once again." Especially when the Legislature had all this time to do something about it, and Pearce instead decided to focus on gun legislation and immigration bills.

"Why would they put [unemployment benefits] on the back burner?" Parraz asked. "We should not have to call a special session for this."

Both the state House and Senate began the special session today, but adjourned till Monday without taking action.

Instead of workers who put into the system getting an unemployment check which is rightfully theirs, maybe we should have more family values and Pearce style work ethic: Living off the public dole, fraud at DMV, excepting Fiesta Bowl perks, or dealing drugs, breaking into homes, selling stolen guns to the cartel, and sucking down prison welfare like his son Josh. Boy, we have a real winner of an example with Russell preaching to us!

At least Brewer had enough sense to be pissed off at Pearce over this issue.  First time I've seen her without her nose up his ass.  She knows she owes her Governership to him because it was his SB1070 that launched her popularity with the hate crowd.  Maybe she's starting to believe she's paid what she owes him and will grow a spine to stand up to him.

Or maybe not...  we can only hope.

You make some good points about Jan. Maybe it was because she was tired of being flooded with calls and e-mails about this issue, so she called a special session to shut everyone up.

I also agree that this is indeed the first time I've seen her without her nose up Pearce's fat ass. Highly unusual. Maybe Jan's not the complete idiot I came to know during her campaign.

Yes, I saw this too. Every now and then Jan Brewer will find her own head and do the right thing. My only hope is that she will continue to grow distance from the likes of that bigot--russell pearce. And see what he is really doing to the American public--the killing of the American Working Class. I hope she will transform back into a real Republican with a lick of sense and not some fuck nut like pearce. And start showing some real leadership, which is virtually non-existent in pearce. She really needs to take the reign.

Name one Az. repibliCON who has a "Lick of Sense" As for the Goobernor, try telling the families who lost loved ones to her no transplant death sentence how she does some things right. The bitch could become the incarnation of Mother Theresa and not make up for the harm she and her cabal have done to the people of this state. Too bad they're too damn dumb to see it.

Your'e a bad journalist Mr. Garcia. Apparently you don't know the distinction between the words immigrant and illegal alien. Study U.S. immigration law before you write ignorant articles.

The "Penny Health Insurance" is quite popular in California and New York. For example it offers the low income health plan. Also offers health insurance for individual with pre-exisiting conditions.

I can't wait for Pearce to be unemployed. Maybe he could use his time to get trained for something that better suits him.... dishwasher or lawn maintenance technician.

Looking forward to pissing on you, Senator Pearce. I know exactly where you live too.

Heh, morons in Arizona and Jason, you wanted this. You wanted your "right to work state" and you got it. You idiots had plenty of time to form some unions, but apparently were too busy with more important matters.

Bobby, do you happen to know who had the biggest hand in crushing most union organizing in the state of Arizona?

Republican Barry Goldwater and his family and their money/ influence. The Goldwater family has been at the forefront of every effort to minimize/reduce or remove any and all UNION influence in AZ since the 1930's.

They had their fingers in numerous economic enterprises, from ranching to mining to retail sales and even restaurants. Since UNIONs would have harmed their income potential from those industries they put the boots to those unions and had major success in all but the mining industry. Since the BIG mines have reduced their production of copper and other materials, the workers have had their UNION won gains eroded to such a point where towns like GLOBE and such are slowly and surly DIEING.

(Since you do not live in Arizona Bobby, Globe is a city that was built up around and to support a HUGE open pit copper mine. Now the tailing piles are slowly killing the people and poisoning the lands in and around the town thanks to the chemicals used to extract the precious metals from the pulverized rock.)

I have heard of Globe. It's horrible.

Um, I NEVER wanted a right to work state dipshit. Shut the fuck up and go back to living under your rock. I have better things to do than to listen to you spew your nonsense incoherently. You really must enjoy hearing yourself talk Bobby, because ain't nobody listening to you.

It's now clear and official, that Neo-Nazi associating politiKKKo--russell pearce, is waging a class warfare on the unemployed middle and working class America. His sinister acts on the Senate floor is deplorably destructive to the economic health of our state and most especially in Maricopa County alone. It's also clear that he's bent on destroying this state through attrition. I call that a travesty to the American people.

It's almost time to call up a Revolution, to save the American Working Man.
