Russell Pearce Threatens To Lock Up Union Members, Public Employees

flyonpearce.jpg
Lord of the Flies, maybe. But the King of Comedy, he ain't

Will I miss having state Senate President Russell Pearce to kick around once he's been recalled, his career ended in disgrace?

Yes and no. Of course, I want to see this menace to humanity flattened (metaphorically) like a Looney Toons character crushed by a cartoon anvil. But, I must admit that his persistent, knuckledragging stupidity does give me plenty to blog about.

The latest addition to the Pearce foot-in-mouth disease compendium is a remark he made at a recent Legislative breakfast given by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, where Pearce threatens to lock 'em up, should public sector employees and unions representing them ever follow the lead of their brothers and sisters in Wisconsin.

According to the Yellow Sheet, Pearce made this crack about what he and his buddy Sheriff Joe Arpaio would do if workers stood up for their rights and demonstrated:

"I've spoken with the sheriff, and he has some nice buses that hold a lot of people. We've also got some tents with a view."

Pearce should know. Not only because he used to work for Arpaio, and claims credit for the Tent City idea, but because his 30 year-old son Joshua Pearce has been in and out of stir on probation violations. This, regarding Josh's 2007 conviction for extreme DUI.

Joshua turned himself in to the Mesa Police recently, after spending a couple of months in Joe's gray bar hotel on a different probation violation. Obviously, Josh, who was under investigation for child abuse earlier this year (but never charged), is the product of exemplary parenting.

The Chamber's breakfast was attended by numerous politicos, many of them trying to play comedian. But the Yellow Sheet does not report Pearce's unconstitutional threat as a joke, and does not mention any laughter in response.

Rebekah Friend, executive director of the Arizona AFL-CIO sure isn't laughing. The organization issued a press release lambasting Pearce. In it, Friend is quoted, thus:

"I find it deeply chilling that an elected official finds it funny to discuss jailing a group of people expressing their First Amendment rights...Suggesting a police crackdown before a rally has even occurred is just more of the same intimidation, threats and innuendo we've come to expect from Senator Pearce and his crony Arpaio."

Pearce is always for locking up "illegals," people who disagree with him, and now public employees. Too bad he can't lock himself up for taking freebies from Fiesta Bowl execs. Then father and son could together enjoy that fine view he was speaking about.

Pearce is a bully and would like nothing more than to quiet employees.  He is using Gestapo tactics and we won't be silenced.  I can't wait until the recall signatures are in and see his face.  As workers we do have rights and you Pearce can't take it away.  Wait until you ride in the back of one of Sheriff Joe's vans after you have been voted out of office.  Can't wait.

A rare triple for Lemons: a sentence at once un-American, in violation of the generally accepted rules of professional journalism and suffering a complete logic fail.

America respects that being investigated is not the same as being accused, accused is not the same as being convicted.  While constantly bemoaning how inappropriate it was for Sheriff Arpaio to use his office to smear people with false arrest, Lemons willingly steps back one huge level in the prosecution chain to use the occurrence of an investigation that lead nowhere to smear his political enemy.

Well, sort of.

Lemons actually has no political beef with Joshua, its the father he wants to go after, and Lemons has no compunction using the son as a proxy against the father. Having failed time and time-again to defeat Russell Pearce is fair and free elections, Lemons disregards the modern standard for professional conduct of avoiding covering the children of politicians. Joshua being investigated is not news unto itself, but a desperate Lemons, who is gleeful in his hate of Pearce (a feeling I share) deliberately dives into the gutter to use sensationalism in place of journalism - and do so at the further sacrifice of reason and logic.

The parent is not accountable for the acts of the grown son. The bible teaches us this, as does our common sense. Great parents sometimes have bad children. This truth, which all but the most mendacious of readers will acknowledge, is disregarded by Lemons. Indeed, a deeper examination of the Joshua story is that Russell actually comes off as the good guy.  Russell preaches law-and-order, and by damn, that is the position he took with his son.  No money for lawyers or bail, no strings pulled.  Nothing.  Russell stood by his position. As much as I despise the guy's politics, you have to recognize his consistency.

When someone who opposes Russell with the intensity that I do feels compelled to rise to his defense, then you know someone has gone too far.  For these reasons, I have a difficult time trusting the PNT when reporting on Pearce.  If it is willing to allow Lemons to breach so many standards, are you seriously willing to trust the PNT's editorial judgement in future Pearce reports?

I thought making metaphorically threatening comments about lawmakers was taboo since Giffords was nearly assasinated and (evidence be damned) the shooter was influenced by right wing rhetoric and vitriol. If only people on both sides would at least attempt to dispaly some intellectual honesty.  Nice show of hypocracy.  Type your comment here.

That's a lie. It's well-known now that the shooter didn't even listen to right wing radio and had little to no interest in politics.

Fuck that cretin. At the point where he wants to lock up the union members, we'll bring in so many from across the US that even his stupid tent jails won't hold us.

Bring it, bitch!

If I were decrying Cretans I might be racist. Cretin refers to a level of developmental disability. One which applies to you fairly well.

If they were to pull the crap they did in WI I would haveno problem with putting them all in jail and then firing them ALL!

You'd have a huge problem doing that, you silly fucktard, because you don't have the authority either to fire or to jail anyone.

Mr/Mrs SillyFucktard let me put it in a way you might understand. I agree and stand withSenator Pearce on this.

Comments likeyours are why the American people will not support much more public unionbitches trying to screw with tax payers.

So bring iton BITCHES!

Bobby, You've got the "welfare queens" wrong. Today's "welfare queens" appeared before Congress this past week -- the 5 Oil CEO's arrogantly demanding their tax subsidies. Why not focus your attention on them?

Just like what's happening in California. The whole state is broke with less than 0 credit rating because of 10billiion spent on illegal immigration, and who knows how much on public unions. The private working man/woman is sick of this crap, but Mistalee and other geniuses can't seem to grasp this. Americans are so sick and tired of paying for kids that have no interest in school, (50%plus dropout rate in Los Angeles unified school district, etc.and grossly overpaid school officials and teachers. You'd think that some of the people on this forum, who actually seem a bit intelligent, sometimes, would get this. But no, they're clueless. Must be a bunch of welfare queens and kings.

["We've also got some tents with a view."]

"WE", Mr. Pearce? Are you still part of MCSO or are you just a mouse in the pocket of the Flaccid Fool?

Remember folks, constitutional rights are nothing more than an annoyance to those like pearce.

I am so sick and disgusted with Pearce and Arpaio's disregard for the people of Arizona. Russell Pearce's remarks certainly don't suprise me. Arpaio loves any excuse to get another "Media Minute"; so I would take the threat seriously. They have to GO!

Pit Boss

I'm willing to bet that he's just like the Governor in Wisconsin: Target the powerless unions but leave the mainly-Republican unions (police and firefighters) alone. It'd be interesting to see how this coward would react if there was a strike by the police unions. Something tells me no buses and no tents would be mentioned and RuSSell would be nowhere to be found.

Didn't he just use this very exercise by having Sal Reza and a lady arrested at the Senate building? Something about a black list of folks who weren't welcome? That same list he gave to security that he then denied ever knowing about?

Geez, why would anyone feel that pearce is the consumate Nazi personality of Arizona?

As the President of our State Senate, Russell Pearce speaks for all of Arizona's citizens, especially when he shoots all of us in the foot, when he lies, when he spews false data, when he consorts with Nazi-focused organizations and persons. It is not Russell Pearce, the man, I am worried about. It is that Russell Pearce is an elected State Senator, elevated to the President of the Senate by his colleagues, and then self-appointed as our immigration spokesman (aka blowhard). Russell Pearce speaks for me, for you, and for the state in general on all matters that he chooses to. I am not worried about Russell Pearce. As a lone bigot, he is harmless. As our bigot in chief and our annointed spokesman and our high level lawmaker, he is disastrous and dangerous.

Former Republican

Gerry C, Well said. A high-level lawmaker who can ramrod a bill through like lightning while ignoring the public's requests for bills that would make Arizona a better place for all. He treats the State of Arizona as if he owns it. Having come out of the MCSO under arpaio explains why the sheriff can act with impunity. It's time to end this abuse of power.

EdEKit
EdEKit

Gerry, thanks for the reminder. Pearce does not have the power to act alone. So far the only dictatorship in the state is in the office of Joe Arpaio. Pearce DOES represent all of Arizona, regardless of what the rest of us think.

He leads a political base, and that base is the power he is using to abuse the rest of us.

"As a lone bigot, he is harmless"

I think most would disagree with your notion. He has done alot of harm to this state. Especially with the state's image. Ooooh I'm aghast at how much harm that he alone, has done in the course of his atrocious tenure. Not to mention his co-sponsoring of the famous SB1070 which comes out at the top of the list as harmful. And because of him(besides the "Flaccid Fool") he has created a dangerous atmosphere of hate and fear. The rise of hate groups increased 2 folds. He's doing a lot of harm, alright. Even as a "lone bigot".

Sir Cedric Hardwick

He has done harm to the States image? With who? Leftist traitors who don't care about borders. Stupid internationalist communist type fools? Chambers of commerce, "slave labor" for Americans traitors? MOST PEOPLE ACROSS THE U.S. TOTALLY, TOTALLY RESPECT ARIZONA. THAT'S RIGHT! THEY RESPECT ARIZONA FOR HAVING THE BALLS THAT SO MANY OTHER STATES DON'T.It's just that most newspapers have leftists as reporters and they won't admit as much.

When I am in another state and tell people I'm form Arizona, the reply is always on the lines of . "Oh, I'm so sorry!" The politics here in Az. has lost how many millions? Do you even pay attention? Until you do.. there's an old saying... " "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt"?"

Norma

Most people I know ACROSS THE U.S. ARE TOTALLY LAUGHING AT ARIZONA!  Maybe you're talking about racist bigots like you.  You and your bigot friends define the laws according to your convenience.  The media reports what they see, not what they would like it to be.  Get a life!

And you exhibit your level of intelligence when you support a candidate - especially to the degree you defend Pearce - because of ONE single issue.

Every single piece of legislation Pearce has proposed related to illegal immigration does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to address the issue of border security.  But, because he knows there are plenty of shallow minded brown skin fearing fools like you, he maintains a level of support.  It is a level that is dropping as people are starting to wise up to him and realize this state faces issues of far greater importance.

You claim "most people" across the US "totally respect" Arizona.  Bullshit.  Well, maybe the people who's posts you read on Stormfront, fox.com or other various and sundry wing-nut extremist sites.  As you are obviously completely incapable of holding an adult, civil debate with anyone over this issue without name calling or trying to shout them down, how would we expect you to accept those who have a differing opinion of you (see past "discussions" I and others have had with Bobby/Chicagonut attempting to remain civil).  Nationwide support for SB1070 has gone down into the low 50% range.  Where was it last year?  All major polls have shown that the American people are getting tired of the hysterics and do not favor the extremists on this issue.  That is a fact and should you figure out how to actually use Google - or any other search engine - you may just figure that out yourself.  Wait...I forgot...facts and you have a way of not meshing.

Most people across the nation support securing our borders...again, something Arpaio, Brewer and Pearce have made no attempt whatsoever to do.  Yet the extreme right continues to bend over for them in their support because of their rhetoric.  No matter that 95% of what they say is proven to be a lie or sourced from extremist, biased sources.  Most people across the country do not "support" illegal immigration and are are pro legal immigration.  But, because they don't support radical and racist ideals you don't agree with them nor will you listen to them.

You fail to make any sort of compelling argument for Pearce when you base your support on a sole issue.  I do not support illegal immigration, I am pro legal immigration ( but I do recognize we have 12,000,000 people who did not just show up overnight and have become woven into our country's fabric economically and socially) but you can easily remove the illegal immigration issues when debating whether Pearce is good or bad and still come to the very easy realization that he needs to go.

His positions on eliminating voter mandated health care, rewriting the US Constitution and public education (both availability and funding) are but just a few.  And, as it relates to this story, I am not a Union fan, but to suggest that Union protesters be thrown in jail should offend every American citizen. But, I don't expect idiots like you to ever bother to seek out facts, let alone educate yourself or God forbid, see the validity in an opposing view.

My point is that he had a lot of help and support in creating the harm he has brought to us. He was elected. He was reelected. He was given the presidency of the senate. He has advanced his venom with the aid and concurrence of others.
