Richard Chrisman BBQ at PLEA Offices Protested (w/Update)

Protesters berate cops coming out of the Chrisman BBQ

Cops and other attendees had to run the gauntlet today at a BBQ/fundraiser for fired, killer-cop Richard Chrisman, held in an underground enclosure at the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, the powerful police union that reps rank and file Phoenix police officers.

About a dozen or so protesters, led by local radio host/activist Carlos Galindo, showed up to give the BBQ-goers hell as they walked into and out of the event.

Activists chanted "Shame on you," and called cops walking past "vampires" and "murderers." Hispanic cops caught the worst of it, and were met with bullhorn blasts of "vendido" ("sell-out" in Spanish) and "Malinche," which is sort of like calling someone a Benedict Arnold en Espanol.

Just in front of the ramp leading down was a makeshift shrine for Daniel Rodriguez, the unarmed south Phoenix resident who was gunned down by Chrisman on October 5.

Chrisman was recently axed by the Phoenix Police Department, and he faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty in the killing of Rodriguez and his dog.

On the sidewalk, prison abolitionist Peggy Plews wrote brightly-colored chalk messages such as "PLEA endorses police violence."

There were occasional words exchanged between the demonstrators and those going to the BBQ, but the PPD's low-key, plainclothes Community Response Squad was on hand to keep the peace. There were no incidents.

That may change tonight when the BBQ resumes from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. A lot more protesters are expected in the evening as folks get off work. Hopefully the demonstration remains peaceful.

Galindo, leading the protest against PLEA today...

Escorted by a plainclothes cop, I descended into the underground parking structure and was led to PLEA treasurer Joe Clure. He told me he wasn't going to talk with me, and then asked me to leave.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I reckon. I have to say the event seemed better attended than I expected. However, I didn't spot Chrisman or PLEA President Mark Spencer for that matter.

I'll check out the scene later on and report back here. Till then...

UPDATE: I swung by the PLEA offices later that evening to eyeball the ongoing protest. According to members of the Phoenix Police Department's Community Response Squad, there had been around 40 protesters outside the PLEA offices during  the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. shift. By the time I arrived around 8:30 p.m., the protest had shrunk to less than 20 people or so.

There had been a little drama in my absence. Some of the protesters went down an alley next to the PLEA offices, and PLEA representatives had demanded they be cited for trespassing. But it was determined that the passage was a right of way, and the matter was dropped.

PLEA representatives, annoyed by the rambunctious demonstration, which included folks       harranguing the gathering on bullhorns, set up speakers and blasted loud music at the activists. The bullhorn-speaker battle had quieted by the time of my arrival.

I witnessed one tense moment when Galindo and PLEA board chairman Frank Marino faced   off, but that eventually dissipated.

Out, out, damn spot: PLEA board chairman Marino hosing down the sidewalk

Officers showing up to participate in the BBQ slowed to a trickle by around 10 p.m. And the protesters finally decided to pack it in.

Sergeant Mark Schweikert of the Community Response Squad told me there had been no arrests or citations at the protest during the day.

I have to commend the CRS, which includes such veteran officers as Sergeant Al Ramirez, for keeping the peace and negotiating between the two opposing sides. No doubt the fact that so many of their fellow cops were involved made this particular demonstration a difficult one for them to handle.

Kudos also to the protesters for remaining peaceful, while getting their point across to the cops attending. PLEA's BBQ deserved the condemnation.

At the end of the evening, PLEA chairman Marino came out to hose off the chalk messages left by Peggy Plews and others. (Most had been wiped off by those who'd made them, so Marino's job was a light one.) As I watched him, I couldn't help but think that the mark of Cain both PLEA and Richard Chrisman have helped affix to the Phoenix Police Department will not be so easily washed away.

Chrisman should be charged with murder.  A ego maniac clown like him has NO business in law enforcement.  Marino should step down from his position as he has all the community sensitivity of a bomb going off.  You don't stand behind, and support, murderers, Marino.

Someone should set up a fundraiser for a cop killer and see how the cops like it.

Every time when Hispanics protest the outlaws(PLEA & the MSCO), it is usually a small band of angry dissents. Why is that??? Hispanics make up the 2nd largest population in Mari-kafka County. Don't get me all wrong, I'm not here to defend the traitorous PLEA or their cause, but I noticed that Carlos Galindo doesn't have that many followers. There's gotta be some other groups other than his, to help protest the enemies of moral and ethic decency within the LEA. There's gotta be a unity of some sort, a common ground and not just for a specific race. Al Sharpton did a great job of uniting the people together to protest the senile ol' coot at the MSCO. I like to see a repeat of that.

If this protest would have been organized by anyone else perhaps more people would have attended. But alas, it's the self-loving self-proclaimed leader Galindo. He's only good for one thing, to read emails and text messages from his 12 listeners that say how much they adore him. About 80% of his program are him reading his love-galindo mail. Joke, just a joke. I'm so glad radio KASA will be rid of him soon... they tried every trick to get rid of him and it finally worked. Hasta la vista, baby!!

This is so disturbing and disgusting - especially since my taxes pay their salaries. All these cops who swore to protect the people have betrayed their duty, because this kind of thing tells all the other cops that Chrisman is the kind of cop they're proud of and gives them license to conduct themselves as he did over the course of his career - a very corrupt one. If I were a member of PLEA, I'd be demanding my dues back and getting as much distance as possible between myself and these people; they have no real honor and their ethical codes are clearly meaningless to them. Too bad anyone saw fit to issue them uniforms, badges, and guns. We're screwed by the looks of how many showed up to support injustice and endorse police brutality.

Chrisman is innocent until proven guilty, they say - why don't the rest of us get that benefit of the doubt from cops, then? Besides, there's so much proof of his guilt and the other officer on the scene is so credible next to this guy, that the state is willing to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars - maybe millions, in the end - to prosecute him under the most severe charge they could have filed, given the circumstances. He should really be sitting in jail for his trial, in the interest of public safety. Any other accused murderer would be. Hell, they lock up people for months on end whose guilt has yet to be proven - and for bullshit like marijuana possession or property damage.

Furthermore, while the murder trial may still be pending, that SOB planted a crack pipe on a distressed mentally ill woman ON CAMERA, which the world saw (including all these cops, no doubt) - for which he should also face serious charges (you can bet that the woman he arrested after setting her up faced jail). I guess his fine policeman's union thinks charging innocent people with crimes is acceptable, too, though - that means they probably all do the same kind of thing, or at least look away and say nothing when it happens. There's one word for those kinds of cops: "PIGS". They have no moral standards - they just protect and defend themselves.

Embracing Chrisman and showing such contempt for the community of people who are still so outraged by Danny Rodriguez' murder exposes PLEA for what they really are: a union of bad cops (and maybe just a few really stupid ones). I hope there are photos and some way to ID each one who showed for this thing, so the rest of us can identify who is NOT to be trusted with either our innocence or our safety. These boys and girls in blue can't even be trusted by the honest cops, like Virgillo, who they tried to publicly crucify for his testimony.

They do all the time idiot.  Look into the case more not just assume what some talking head in the media has told you think.  "Innocent until proven guilty" is what you scream every time some drug dealer is caught but as soon as it is someone who puts their life on the line to protect you, you can't set up the gallows fast enough.  You people make me sick; to think you call yourselves Americans, you are nothing more the idle middle class thinking you are the next Martin Luther, or MLK jr. When in fact you are more like the boy who cried wolf (racism, police brutality).

Mr. Galindo is just receiving free publicity from New Times...and stealing $$$$$ like crazy

There are other groups, but the problem is that Galindo chases other leaders away. He incites his 12 followers to call them names, yell at them with bull horns and then he talks smack about them on his radio program asking his followers to call other leaders, harass them and call them names and insult them. Galindo the self-proclaimed leader claims he's the only one out there .. thus your observation. But with attacks like that from a self proclaimed leader, why would any REAL community leader want to be there?

I used to go to events where he was there (not because of him but because of other leaders called for an action) and as soon as I saw what he does to others I stopped going. I even un-friended him when I started listening to the crap he spews on the airwaves about others. He's toxic and dangerous to the movement. Personally, as I got a chance to talk to him in private on several occasions, I truly believe he's unstable.

Well said. It is disgusting to have a BBQ for a murderous cop in order to raise funds for what, I have no idea. You and I would be locked up from the day the murder was committed. The manner in which this crime occured deserves no bail. And how is he going to raise the funds for a top notch lawyer? The union of his fellow boys in blue, that's who. This is Phoenix and it stinks like a pig's entrails in the middle of summer. From the governor to the mayor, the chief of police, the state legislature, the sheriff and his....whatever you want to call them....they add to the criminal corruption in this state that is mirrored by our criminals in Washington D.C.

It is true that every person is legally "innocent until proven guilty" - and that includes the cops. But it's only a formality. In cases where it's known that the suspect committed the crime, that all goes out the window.

Also, a "cop" that murders someone does not "put their life on the line to protect me."

But anyone with half a brain cell (which doesn't include you, obviously) should know that.

it's not about Galindo. it's about PLEA. so you don't want NT to report on the fact that the PLEA offices were protested? dont make sense. if you're so worried about Galindo doing it, you should have organized a protest insteadof bitching after the fact. this is whats wrong with the movement in PHX. everybody hates on everybody else. crazy division

Gonna attack me on your NO SPIN program like you do to everyone else? It'll be interesting to hear you tomorrow, GALINDO. Lets see if you can bite your tongue and not comment about this. You even talk smack about Stephen Lemons. You claim that Stephen is in the pockets of the other "Pseudo Leaders".. you cry on the air claiming that's why Stephen doesn't give you credit because he's got his other favorite activists. You poor pitiful clown.

not only that Richard he is a ratero....New Times should and must invitigate Mr. Galindo and stop giving all the free publicity...I am with u ....Mr. Galindo is not a true leader he is a ratero

Ok that it total BS Richard! Which tells me you do NOT know him at all! First of all he has lots of friends who are white...including me. Where is your evidence he hates gays, because I have seen otherwise!

Those remarks are not anti semitic. America does kiss the ass of Jews....mainly due to religion teaching them that Jews are God's chosen people. Therefore the Jews get away with everything, even in the UN. The Jews do control the media quite a bit too. That's been proven. Anytime anyone says something against a Jew, that word gets thrown at them. Even former Israeli minister Shulamit Aloni admits its a trick to use against anyone who speaks against them. She is a Jew.

He has quite a few more supporters than 12 people too. Over 3000 friends on FB alone. You two are a joke.

not only does he spend time reading his love-galindo mail..but he is taking advantage of his people..new times should invistigate..i remember how New Times self proclaim Elias Bermudez even gave him a front page ( full color) where is he now???? Supreme Court filed an order for him to stop stealing from his own people.....New Times should do there work and start invistigating correctly.....New Times should start invistigating Carlos!!!

Walter, the bbq had a twofold goal, (1) Raise money for legal defense and/or living expenses (He's no longer employed) and (2) a show of support from his sisters and brothers in law enforcement. Those who attended don't necessarily think he didn't do wrong, but they are trying to show some support for another cop. Right or wrong.

Funny that Carlos Galindo has to blog claiming he's Veronica Jones. Must be a secret desire to wear a bra and high heels. OK, I just made myself gag thinking about it.

Veronica, nor would I show up and support the guy, based on what I've seen and read about the case. I was simply explaining why some of the less brilliant minds at PLEA decided to do this thing. Not agreeing with, or supporting it...

Veronica Jones

You don't show up and support a murderer period unless you think he did no wrong. I would not support a fellow officer who did this.

must agre with u Tommy itis more about brothers in law enforcement....our polic puts their live in jeoperdy every time they show up for work...and they get a miserable salary...if they get hurt they need to take care of themselves...
