Jan Brewer Defies Russell Pearce, Republinuts, Vetoes Birther Bill, Others

janbrewer555.jpg
Jan Brewer puts the smack down on Russell Pearce and his wing-nut pals, at least on three bills...

Chalk up another embarrassing defeat for state Senate President Russell Pearce and his fellow Republinuts on three bills they desperately wanted: the birther bill, the guns on campus wackiness, and a bill allowing for an anti-health care reform compact among the states.

Governor Jan Brewer has just vetoed all three measures.

Though I've dissed Brewer in the past as dumber than a bag of bricks, I now amend that, as her bag is at least three bricks lighter today.

(My colleague James King has already blogged about the birther mess. He has all the dirty details on the "circumcision angle," here.)

Perhaps Brewer's Svengali, Highground Consulting guru Chuck Coughlin, advised her to veto this trio of wing-nut proposals. In doing so, I suspect she has spared Arizona a little of the near-universal derision that it receives worldwide whenever its name is intoned.

Of course, this doesn't make up for her signing Senate Bill 1070 into law about a year ago, something Coughlin also advised her to do.

But Jan Brewer suddenly asserting herself against Pearce, who once claimed Brewer owed her 2010 victory to him because of his legislative spawn 1070, is a BIG deal.

Her response to the birther bill is the most amusing. In a letter to state House Speaker Kirk Adams explaining her veto, she had the following to say:

"I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and more powerful nation on earth to submit their `early baptismal or circumcision certificates' among other records to the Arizona Secretary of State. This is a bridge too far."

Sleazy state House Representative Carl Seel was the sole sponsor of the birther madness. Well, at least Seel got to meet fellow birther Don Trump over this little bit of conspiratorial insanity.(Schmucks of a feather...)

Brewer's letter to Pearce on the guns-on-campus bill was equally caustic. She said her prime reason for vetoing this travesty was that it was "poorly written," and could muddle federal and state prohibitions regarding guns on K-12 grounds.

"While I support the thoughtful expansion of where firearms should be allowed," she wrote. "The actual legislation that does so must be both unambiguous and clear to protect the Second Amendment rights of lawful gun owners. Senate Bill 1467 is neither."

Ouch. Then there's her veto on Senate Bill 1592, which would have forced the governor to sign a compact with other states to defy President Barack Obama's federal healthcare reform.

Brewer pointed out to Pearce that by directing her to do so, the legislation "violates the separation of powers requirement established by Article 3 of the Arizona Constitution."

The governor stated that she continued to "support efforts toward a better partnership with the federal government" over health care.

The U.S. Congress would have had to approve any such compact between the states, and as that was unlikely to happen, the bill was a giant waste of time. But Brewer still gets points for vetoing it.

Pearce voted for all three measures, publicly supported them, and was a sponsor of the anti-health care reform bill.

These vetoes are almost as severe a drubbing for Pearce as was the defeat of five Pearce-pushed anti-immigrant bills in the state Senate recently.

Do I sense a shift? Some tectonic plates moving? Maybe it's a mere tremor instead of a 9.0, but it still feels like moving earth to me.

The possibility of overrides on all three? Well, the legislature will likely be at sine die tomorrow. Also, a lot of the GOPers that voted for these proposals did so knowing Brewer would veto them.

So, I think they're dead. And Pearce is a loser, once again.

I owe Mrs. Brewer an apology. I didn't think she had the half-brain needed to veto the three bills. I was wrong.

I won't question her motive, however. We won't it unless the phat lady swings..

I agree with vetoes of the Birther Bill and the Guns On Campus Bill, but I would like to see the Guns On Campus Bill re-worked and become law.

Both bills were incompetently written. You'd of thought the legislators took the "Take your kid to work Day" idea and ran with it for the entire session, just only with the youngest kiddies writing laws in crayon. Especially the Guns On Campus Bill, which would have left law abiding gun owners wide open to Federal charges.

Yes, the Birther Bill was total trash from idea to final version, on top of being written very badly. Obama is an American, a Christian and was born in Hawaii. We have all seen the birth certificate, it's just that some of us plaster their hands over their eyes and chant "LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU LA LA LA LA I SEE NOTHING LA LA LA LA" when you tell them "Look, here it is".

But I see nothing wrong with removing restrictions on law abiding gun owners. Most especially adult students on a college campus and even more especially anyone with a Concealed Weapon Permit.

My permit required fingerprints and an FBI background check. That is more than what it takes to buy a gun. Why should I, as a verified law abiding person, be required to disarm myself to take a college class? I have made it over five decades without becoming a criminal. Owned dozens of firearms. Fired tens of thousands of rounds. Have twice been confronted by criminals in my life and the mere presence of a gun in my hand made them quit the effort and flee. All that and no crimes or accidents or carelessness, for all these decades.

What in the hell are people afraid of here?

The legislature should re-work the vetoed gun Bill, carefully examining the Federal requirements to see what can be done without creating criminals where none now exist.

It would also be nice if they'd work on the damned budget. So far all they have figured out is how to steal monies that taxpayers voted to spend differently, weaken the state by damaging education and kill people by yanking away health care.

Wait wait wait..... Governor Jan Brewer vetoed the health-compact, guns on college campuses, AND the birther bills?

You mean we DON'T have to send her to the mental hospital? Awwwww........... I was looking forward to seeing her getting heavily sedated for those voices in her head. Maybe I still have a chance......... Pearce needs to be heavily sedated for those voices in his head.................

X, I think he is way past sedation stage, Lobotomy would be a more appropiate treatment for him, specially if administered by any of our good 'ol american doctors: Dr. Smith Wesson, Dr. Samuel Colt, or Dr. John Browning, etc.

Maybe Brewer tried some of that medical pot and it chilled her out a bit. Pearce should try it.

Lets be honest. The Birther bill would've been great if she signed it. We would hold our rank as the stupidest State cutting education in the Nation. The Governor should just sign everything Pearce is pushing so we can hurry up and become the Trailer Park State.

If they had cut education in 1991 instead of 2011, these bills would have been applauded by all.

Brewer's brains have decided that she does not need Mr. Fiesta Pearce for her political survival any longer. If they override her veto on any of these bills, there will be court fights for sure. Like Brewer suing over the separation of powers issue. I think she would have to because she can't set (or continue??) a precedent of the Governor being subordinate in power to the Legislature.

I particularly liked Brewer's smack at Pearce: "We don't need our courts to write our gun laws. That is the job of the Legislature." She is exactly right. This flies in the face of the self-aggrandizing manifesto that Pearce authored and was posted on the Intellectual Conservative website. There he complains about the activist 9th Circuit refusing to lift the stays that Judge Bolton imposed regarding SB 1070, yet he invited the same thing with the ambiguous gun bill. Of course 1070 is not necessarily a clean and clearly written bill either. It invited the court fight and it seems that Arizona is on shaky ground in this area.

I would like to see an interview with Pearce on these bills that Brewer vetoed. I imagine we would see lots of Pearce's weasel tactics as he talks. While on the subject of Pearce, speaking of lying, we all know our beloved (gagging) Sheriff spouts false information with the regularity of his Metamucil. When I listen to Pearce's lies, they tend to categorically fall into three areas.

The first is casual citation of false or nonexistent information/statistics to support his position on something. He avoids rebuttal by not shutting his mouth long enough to get shot down.

The second is when confronted about an action or a statement he made. His first response is usually a rapidly created lie that, if true, would easily put the issue to rest. For example, when questioned about the Fiesta Bowl, he said he would get the cancelled checks to prove he paid. Another time, he was asked if he paid for his tickets he responded, "Yes, immediately. I have the receipts."

The third type of Pearce lie is when he tries to rationalize or neutralize his type 2 lie. Here, he gets explosively angry and belligerent that his type 2 lie did not work. While never at a loss for words and time when spouting his type 1 lies, here in type 3, he is very short with a quick lie and caustic response intended to impeach the questioner's credibility and will quickly turn and run like a coward.

________________

I wonder if any of Pearce's testimony on SB 1070 will even be heard in court. Just his Fiesta Bowl lies are enough to mount a tremendous attack on his credibility. The door will certainly be open for that if he testifies. If the state really wants 1070, Pearce should be kept far away from the proceedings.

I know I got off topic, but what the heck. :-)

Be afraid.

Jan Brewer distancing herself from her wingnut Zonie base in order to appear sane and reasonable to the rest of the country?

Not likely that she suddenly got smarter or developed a conscience. QUITE likely that she is positioning herself for a federal position, elected or appointed.

USWV, If one attaches a hose of some sort to one's urine delivery device, and doesn't expose any genitalia then there is no 'indecent exposure' of any sort. Maybe disorderly conduct for pissing on a piss pot such as pearce, but no sex crimes. In fact as much as pearce has tried to fuck all of us taxpayers over he should be charged with a class action crime of rape...

Since pissing in public is against the law and can land you on the sex offenders database depending on who is watching, I was actually planning on filling up a gallon bucket over a period of time and just pouring it on him, I can do it very rapidly and acurately.

This is where I enter the picture. Since I live the closest to Pearce and all, I can piss on him, and do it rather quickly, and still have some piss left over for the Flaccid Fool of MCSO.

What idiot introduced a bill that would allow guns in schools and more importantly, why? This is one of the most damning examples of the certifiably insane running our government...or trying to. Senate President Russell Pearce needs to leave office in disgrace. His continued presence in the State Senate is an insult and and an outrage. It's unbelievable that this bill would even make it to the Brewer's desk. I'm glad sanity came up a winner in this case.

Well, well, well, the "Puppet" is not as dumb as she looks and is rebelling against her puppeteer, she realizes pearce is as good as gone and his power taken away, she also realizes this recall will likely succeed against pearce so she is now trying to put realstate between them, she is now going to start playing ball with arizona citizens for fear that she too is shown the door. Too little too late, they both thought of themselves as invinsible at one time and now she is now running scared and pearce's latest outburst shows a high level of frustration because he knows his days are numbered. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, and it's only getting better.

I would encourage anyone and everyone who is registered to vote and lives in Legislative District 18, or knows of anyone who is registered to vote and lives in Legislative District 18, to visit http://recallpearce.com and then sign the recall petition, immediately.

Unfortunatly I dont live on this asshole's district but I am a financial supporter, money very well spent. I do have a question though, him being Senate President and all his decisions affect the entire state, why cant the entire state be able to sign a recall, I think once you are president you have a lot more power then a mere district senator, if your power increased, so should the recall block. Just saying.
