Steven Seagal a No Show at Joe Arpaio's Nickle-Bag Pei Wei Raid

sheriffpeiwei.jpg
A Pei Wei, Joe? No wonder Steven Seagal bailed

When I heard Sheriff Joe Arpaio was up at Glendale Avenue and 7th Street raiding a Pei Wei, I had to turn the car around. I was hoping Machete-star Steven Seagal was helping him bust a fast-food joint for Seagal's A&E reality series.

See, Seagal's cop show was given the boot last year by Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand, after Seagal was accused of sexual harassment, trafficking in women for sex, and wrongful termination in a civil complaint filed by a former swimsuit model named Kayden Nguyen.

The suit was ultimately dismissed, but not before nuggets like this were reported by TMZ.com and other outlets:

"Mr. Seagal had been keeping two young female Russian 'Attendants' on staff who were available for his sexual needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

That was a little too much for Normand, who cut ties with Seagal's show following the allegations. Steven Seagal: Lawman followed Seagal, a reserve deputy chief in Jefferson Parish, as he chased alleged bad guys with other deputies.

Unlike Normand, Arpaio is shameless, so now Seagal lives in Maricopa County and is shooting season three of his COPS-like production with the assistance of the sheriff's office. Seagal is also a "special deputy" with the MCSO.

But Seagal was a no-show at the Joe-show today, as Arpaio's boys in beige spent their time collaring Pei Wei workers who'd used fake ID's to score jobs. Can't say that I blame him. I mean, Pei Wei, Joe? Restaurant workers? What's next, McDonald's?

Actually, Arpaio's already been there. He's raided a McDonald's, a car wash, Sizzler steak house, the Mesa library, and on and on. Each time, these supposedly big tough-guy deputies end up arresting moms and dads here illegally, struggling to feed their kids.

josands.jpg
Arpaio doing the "Joe show." Brian Sands is the guy staring at the camera.

At the media scrum outside the Pei Wei, which the MCSO hit at lunch time, BTW, Arpaio and his stone-faced Deputy Chief Brian Sands defended this waste of taxpayer resources to me.

When I wondered why Arpaio didn't have his men and women out chasing kidnappers, rapists and murderers, Arpaio kept barking that using a fake ID is "a class four felony" and that Arizona is number one in ID theft.

Still, I don't see them hustling down to Tempe on a Friday night to collar all the college kids using bogus licenses to score booze. After all, it's a class four felony.

He and Sands were claiming 121 "victims," but I'll believe that when I see it. Most people working illegally have made-up identities. And the forgery statute says someone has to have the intent to defraud. Who are undocumented workers defrauding? Themselves, since they'll never see the money taken out of their paychecks for Social Security?

I asked Joe why the MCSO never arrests the employers. He told me the MCSO had arrested three. That was news to me, so I asked him who, when and where.

"What, do you think I have a computer mind around here?" he said, later adding, "I don't have it in my mind. This was [in] the last three years."

Sands, for some weird reason, decided to add his two cents, telling me I should go talk to the "victims" if I didn't think ID theft was a serious crime. Yeah, but busting Pei Wei? Couldn't the dozen or so deputies on hand be out doing real police work?

"We've got other people out doing real police work," Sands shot back.

Thanks for the quote, dude.

He kept telling me "It's a felony," but I reminded him there were worse felonies, like, um, murder and stuff.

"It doesn't matter," Sands told me.

In other words, a felony is a felony, a victim is a victim.

I replied that the victims of assault, rape, murder, child molestation, etc., might see it a little differently.

Joe had walked away and was holding court with some middle-aged fans. I walked up to him and asked him if he'd arrested any white people today.

"White? I don't look at the color," he responded. "How the hell do I know what they are?"

I had to ask him about the rumor that he was going to retire in 2012 and back state Senate President Russell Pearce as his replacement.

"If I don't run for U.S. Senate, I'm running for sheriff [in 2012]," he announced. "I'm going to stay sheriff as long as you work for the New Times."

If that's all it would take, Joe, I'd tender my resignation tomorrow.

I should mention that Arpaio hit four Pei Wei's total, as well as Pei Wei's corporate office. His press release crows about nabbing 26 workers. Big whoop. The Phoenix Police Department gets double that sometimes in one drop house raid.

This would all be a joke if there weren't little kids out there whose parents won't be coming home tonight.

I know, I know, their parents were working "illegally." But Arpaio himself is still being investigated by a federal grand jury for criminal abuse of power allegations, and he gets to go home tonight, eat Ava's meatloaf and sleep the sleep of the conscience-less.

And in the grand scheme of things, the MCSO's corruption, malfeasance, overspending, witch hunts against political enemies, inmate deaths, and so forth far outweigh whatever harm is done by someone working in this country with a fake ID. One thing is certain: The wrong people sit in jail tonight.

There was a time when I liked Steven Seagal's "in-your-face" style of righting the wrongs in our world. But at some point I noticed that he was falling victim to the right-wing BS being pushed around. The concept that you punish the environmental polluters by blowing up their facilities and creating a bigger ecological disaster simply makes no sense. But, then gain most right-wing concepts of Earth's stewardship also make no sense!!!

Steven has clearly moved to the dark side (maybe because his film career has tanked and he cannot seem to stay married more that 10 years at a time (working on trying to keep his 4th wife). Real solid, right-wing family values, huh?

In any case, Steven Seagal has been banned from my list of movies to watch. Total example of a bad American.

Seagal is a joke and a piss poor actor, Arpaio and his circus of clowns are all nothing but jokes.

If I worked at the New TImes and Joe would've told me he was only staying in his position as long as I worked there, I would have tendered my resignation his first day on the job.

It would save Arizona a lot of grief. We should arrest Arpaio. He is raping Arizona. And after all, that's a class 4 felony!!

And just for the record, Seagal was an embarrassment to Aikido as well as the acting profession, even before he became a bloated has-been.

Wow. Seagall. Hendershott. Arpaio.

This is a very sad situation, not only for those who were involved but for their family as well. These people the only thing they were doing were trying to have a better live not only for them but for their family. You are probably asking, how do you know that?. Well one of the person arrested is my best friend. We are friends for a long time. She came to this country looking for a better future, and started school right out way. She graduated high school with excellent GPA and was saving some money to star college on fall of this year. .One of her biggest dream was to marry her fiancé on March 5 of this year. A day after she was arrested was her wedding. Can you imagine how she feels?. Like I out ready said “ THIS IS A VERY SAD STORY”

It’s difficult to understand how some people especially those who are in power does not have any feeling about the consequences that there action will have for future generation. Let me tell you something, our future is on the hands of those kinds that their parents are being deported. One day they will rice up and speak up for those who can’t now. I know that not everyone will agree with me, but is ok “we are in the land of FREEDOM- “. Everyone is unique and have their own believes. But one thing I can say: WE ARE ALL HUMANS AND DESORVE RESPECT. This people were not doing anything- they were not selling drug or stilling. They were working, like anybody else. I understand they were working illegally but really how many people now in our government are not doing something illegally. See one of my theories is- when you judge and accuse other it’s because deeply inside of you- you are just same. PLEASE PRAY AND SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WHO CANT

Wow. Some interesting comments here.

I can't stand Arpaio or Pearce or Brewer or anyone who whole-heartedly supports their agendas.

At the same time, I also don't appreciate anyone from ANY country coming here illegally. I personally don't have a problem with law enforcement looking for people who are using invalid ID/documents to gain employment, especially if true identity theft is involved. Stephen, the person who is hurt when that happens is the person whose SS # is being used. The additional income is reported under that SS # and if that person is not claiming that income on their tax return, it can lead to a huge nightmare with the IRS.

That being said, these "raids" are exactly what most people here, including Stephen, claim they are. Media events. Joe getting his ugly mug on television. A deflection of attention from the disgusting pile of corruption that is MCSO and Arpaio. "Don't look here! Lookie over there! It's a Mezzican!"

If there is some reason to believe that Pei Wei (or any other business) has illegals working there with stolen or fake ID, good, quiet detective work without the TV cameras and press releases would take care of it with no fan fare ... just good law enforcement work.

LOL Stephen. I would hate to see you resign. But if it would get rid of Da Shurf...

The Flaccid Fool kept barking that using a fake ID is a class 4 felony and that Arizona is #1 in ID theft.

The only class 4 felony that I see is the voters of Maricopa County re-electing Joe Arpaio as sheriff of Maricopa County.

The only things Arizona is #1 in is racist, Nuremberg-style laws and getting this county sued whenever the Ancient One is allegedly doing "real police work" and does his bullshit "sweeps" and "raids".

My drill sergeants in boot camp were far more intimidating than Chief Deputy Brian Sands and the MCSO shurf. The Flaccid Fool and Sands are total fucking jokes.

Pearce is a neo-Nazi fascist who is Adolf Hitler reborn and he is a detriment to our state. He is an embarrassment to the city of Mesa, Maricopa County, and the state of Arizona.

Pearce started forming a police state in Arizona when he was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 2000. 11 years later we still haven't gotten it in our heads that this stupid old man is a danger not only to himself but to the state as a whole. I am thinking of proposing a two-term limit, similar to the U.S. Constitutions' 22nd Amendment.

I would really like to see Senate President Russell Pearce do the perp-walk with his good buddies the Flaccid Fool, Hendy, Fox, Black, Candy Ass Thomas, Aubuchon, Alexander, Puroll and Babeu. I don't believe Arizonans can trust their elected officials to look out for the voters' best interests anymore.

This whole fucking state needs an overhaul. Starting with the Flaccid Fool of MCSO.

Great question -- how many people are working illegally? That applied to everyone - not just illegal immigrants we used to call undocumented workers.

Your friend appears to have a relatively reasonable level of intelligence. With all the advocacy within the undocumented immigrant community (see below) I can't believe she didn't know the penalties which may apply should she be identified as having an unlawful diplomatic status in this country. What did she expect would happen?

No one I know is advocating that our immigration laws be broken. A lot of people I know are advocating for our immigration laws to be modified to accomodate more people in the process of legal immigration (comprehensive immigration reform).

The more we just ignore the law the worse it will be on the people who do so. Please educate yourself and others so that they won't be caught up in the immoral immigration policies of this Country.

At least these illegal people actually broke the law. We live in a fear based society where White people get convicted everyday for crimes they never committed, however. For innate "racism" and "hate" whether they do anything or not. And the SPLC, ADL, JDL, ACLU, FBI, and media launches investigations and harassment against American White civil rights activists despite any wrongdoing or crimes committed as well. Just for exercising their free speech as any other civil rights activist does. Except if they are White they get fired from jobs, beat by mobs in the streets, spit on, called horrible names, and put on government watch lists. I have personally experienced more bigotry, hate, racism, discrimination, and violation of my rights from so-called peace activists and anti-racists than any non-white I know has been treated wrongly by Whites.

DAVIDB63
DAVIDB63

Going after people for breaking the law is wrong, why? I have to wonder why some people do not want laws enforced, but complain about rape, robbery, murder, and such.?If a person is in America illegally, and is here after being deported, they are a felon. If an illegal is working here, they are here illegally, and working illegally, under the Simpson/Mazzoli act.The theft of an identity is illegal,so that is another crime, and they are a habitual criminal for breaking alot of laws, over and over again. They need to be arrested, pay for their crimes, lose all they have, all of it sold off,the money given to the state, and they get deported.

I work full-time, care for my ill father and sister, and I served in the Army. And I am damn proud of myself for all that I've accomplished. And that's alot more then you.

XSoldier
XSoldier

How about the fact that, unlike you, I enlisted in the U.S. Army and served? You have to complete boot camp to be considered a soldier numbnuts.

XSoldier
XSoldier

Gee dumbass, let's start with the Founding Fathers, shall we?

Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both owned slaves who were presumably African-American, were White men, and preached that all men are created equal, that everyone is entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that all men were born with certain inalienable rights. All this you can find in the U.S. Constitution and in history.

Let's take the U.S. Civil War on now.

President-elect Abraham Lincoln vowed to end slavery due to the 1857 U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Dred Scott. The court ruled that African-Americans could and would never become citizens of the United States. South Carolina seceded from the United States, as did 12 other states. The South was determined to keep its Jim Crow laws and ways of life. People like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman helped free slaves using the Underground Railroad and helped keep slaves informed. The U.S. Civil War officially began on 4/12/1861, and ended on 4/9/1865. In the end, President Lincoln was assassinated because he put an end to racism by ending slavery and interpreting the U.S. Constitution correctly. Hence the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and laws like the Civil Rights Act of 1875, the Amnesty Act of 1872, and the Naturalization Act of 1870. All signed by Republican President Ulysses S. Grant, all designed to expand the civil rights of minorites and end racism.

Let's skip ahead to the turn of the century from the 19th to the 20th Centuries now.

Women were considered less than men up until the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution passed, allowing women the right to vote, on September 19, 1919 (keep in mind that the U.S. Constitution has been active since 1789, so about 130 years) We also fought World War II and Adolf Hitler over inequality (Adolf hated the Jews for allegedly rejecting him from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, and it is rumored that Adolf himself was in fact part Jewish) and that was in 1941. Since then, genius, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 expanded civil rights to everyone, thanks in part to people like Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, regardless of gender, creed, race, etc. Keep in mind that this was as recently as 50 years ago. But then again, that would hurt your pea-sized brain and your pea-sized head.

So yes, dumbass, that makes laws and law enforcement racists. And when our Legislature (read: Senate President Russell Pearce) authors, passes and gets signed Nuremberg-style laws that target people of one nationality or skin color, it does in fact make law enforcement and the law racist. So sit back, shut the fuck up, and enjoy the show. I served my country honorably in the U.S. Army. I served 6 years and got out. Hence my name XSoldier.

J Curwen
J Curwen

"When is law enforcement racism?" Where would I even begin to answer that question? Back in the 60s when the cops sicked the dogs on the freedom marchers? Back in the 19th century when the cops enforced the Fugitive Slave Act? Might it be from the 1920's onward when the drug laws were explicitly enforced to keep the cocaine crazed Negroes from molesting white women?

A better question might well be "When is law enforcement not racism?" The list might be shorter than with the original question.

Physical Standards# The two services have an initial training phase for recruits. The Army calls this phase Basic Combat Training (BCT) while the Marines call their program Recruit Training (RT). On the whole, RT has slightly higher physical-fitness standards. Marine recruits have to run three miles on their test as opposed to the Army's two. The Army uses sit-ups as opposed to the Marine Corps' crunches. Also, the Army uses push-ups while the Marine Corps uses pull-ups. The number of reps for these exercises is generally a little higher in the Marines.Mental Standards# Probably the best-known aspects of Marine Corps Recruit Training are the intense, intimidating Drill Instructors (DIs). These DIs have the recruits under total control and tell them when to wake up, where to walk, when to eat and even when to go to the bathroom. The point of all this control is to instill in the recruit discipline and instant obedience, as well as creating the ability to think clearly in stressful situations. Army Drill Sergeants are also intimidating, though they don't do as much yelling. Still, Army recruits face the same mental stress when it comes to learning huge amounts of information and having to take responsibility for other recruits.Gender# The Army has five basic training sites. Fort Jackson trains the majority of female recruits, and Fort Sill and Fort Leonard Wood train the rest. Fort Benning trains only male recruits for Infantry and Fort Knox trains males for Armor. At Jackson, Sill and Leonard Wood, male and female recruits live apart but train together. Marine training occurs at two locations: Parris Island and San Diego. Parris Island trains all female recruits and male recruits east of the Mississippi River. San Diego trains male recruits west of the Mississippi. In the Marines, men and women are separated in training.
