Joe Arpaio Stages Jail Shakedown for Steven Seagal (w/Response from MCSO's Brian Lee)

Arpaio: Whoring out the MCSO to Steven Seagal

So it's Friday --traditionally a slow news day -- which means time for another Sheriff Joe Arpaio media stunt, this one to help his buddy Steven Seagal's A&E reality series Steven Seagal: Lawman. (Please see updates below.)

Although the media has been told to "embargo" this one for "jail security" till 5 p.m. I'm giving it to you right now. Here's the e-mail MCSO flack Brian Lee just sent out:

Please embargo this information until 5:00 PM for Jail Security purposes!! Media Advisory for Friday March 11, 2010 Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be conducting a large scale shakedown operation within all county jails this afternoon.

As a sidebar, Sheriff Arpaio will also be joined by one of his better known Posseman, Actor Steven Seagal Media is invited to the Tent City Jail at 5:00 PM this afternoon where the Sheriff will explain the purpose behind a full jail shakedown.

Sheriff Arpaio will address the media outside of the large main gate at the Tent City Jail off of Gibson Lane. It is easiest to access Tents by turning East on Gibson Lane off of 35th Avenue and following it straight back to the Tents Jail.

Lt. Brian Lee
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office
Public Information Officer

"As a sidebar"? Give me a freakin' break. This jail "toss" is obviously staged for the express purpose of being filmed by Seagal's TV crew, just as was the "cockfight" bust recently where scores of MCSO SWAT and other deputies showed up at a Laveen property to bust one dude.

How much money is the MCSO wasting on PR stunts to assist Seagal, whose show was run out of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana because of allegations of sex trafficking on Seagal's part?

The lawsuit those allegations were in was later dropped, but the Jefferson Parish Sheriff had already shut the A&E production down because of them.

I've put in public records requests with the MCSO for everything to do with Seagal, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for them.

What needs to happen is that the Maricopa County Supervisors need to step in and put the smack down on this waste of resources during a recession and a budget crisis.

Of course, if they do, Joe might send Seagal over to arrest them, seeing that Joe's deputized the aging, stone-faced "actor." What a pathetic joke. One entirely in character for Arpaio, I might add.

UPDATE: I e-mailed MCSO flack Brian Lee to ask if I would be allowed into Arpaio's presser. When he didn't respond, I published this item and sent him a link to it. Here's what he had to say, and my response.

From Brian Lee via e-mail:

No, as usual you will not be allowed in. I honestly do not understand why you insist on doing things like this when it affects the safety and security of our employees. You may not believe that but it does. I understand you may take issue with the Sheriff but I do not understand what you have against rest of our employees?

If you want New Times representation at our news conferences, feel free to send James King or Ray Stern and I will be happy to let them in.

My reply:

Interesting, so you block only me. I feel honored...As for a jail shakedown, you can protect the safety of employees by NOT calling a news conference. It is the MCSO publicity machine that's putting corrections officers at risk. Not me.

2nd UPDATE: The MCSO allowed in my colleague Jim King, but not without giving him grief for my blog post breaking this dumb "embargo" the MCSO had asked for in its press alert.

Local TV gave the story short shrift, and for good reason. First, it's not a story. A jail "toss"? Jails and prisons do this sort of thing all the time. The only thing potentially newsworthy would've been the presence of Steven Seagal. But according to King, Seagal wasn't around.  Or at least he wasn't made available to the press.

Second reason, the tsunami. Even the local news lead with it. Arpaio may have counted on a normal, slow Friday news day, but this was not the norm. I saw Channel 5, and they didn't mention the Arpaio stunt de jour till around 15 minutes or so into the broadcast.

Maybe next week, Joe. And make sure Seagal's around, OK? Otherwise, what's the point in showing up?

Your community is overrun with criminals and you take one cheap shot after another at one of the only public figures you have that actually cares and is trying to do something about it. You lead the nation in kidnappings and drug violence, and it involves children. Why don't you join the police force and arrest the criminals? Is it because Joe doesn't arrest enough of them? It sounds to the rest of us like you don't like the idea of a sheriff that locks up douchebags for being douchebags. Sounds like a pretty good guy to me, but I don't live there or know anymore than what I see on national news.

Hey guys, who wants to rob a bank in the morning? I just want a better life. After that I am going to steal someones identity so I can get a job. What? I just want a better life.

So he throws a press conference to brag about the amount of contraband he's finding in the jail he runs. Isn't he pretty much admitting that the jail is not being run very well if he's got people getting stuff over a fence to the guys inside so easily?

This received less coverage then the Operation Bitch Sting did. Seriously-pimping a dog on Craigs list? One thing for certain is 100% of all bestiality violators in Maricopa County are white males and US citizens. If you don't believe me-check MCSO's own records.

Lieutenant Lee:

When your diaper-wearing, dementia-suffering boss the MCSO shurf announces he's shaking down the death camps, it places all MCSO officers and detention officers in peril. Then again, this isn't a professional law-enforcement agency. Rather, it is a fucking joke. The laughingstock of the United States.

Buffoon is as clueless and dimwitted as the Flaccid Fool, something he picked up from the Old Fool. If Buffoon had simply walked away from the Flaccid Fool, he wouldn't have caught the stupid bug...... Just look at the Puroll investigation......

Brian Lee has been one of Arpaio's personal cock suckers for years, just like Brian Sands has been.

Some things will just never change.

>>Sounds to me like Lee has been drinking the Pearce Kool-Aid when it comes to banning people from public buildings (in this case, Tent City).

When I read that Joe announced he was shaking down his death camps, I nearly gagged. Again.

Of course Seagal wasn't there. He's not going to show up to see Joe & Co. make asses out of themselves (which they do on a regular basis, I might add).

What really needs to happen is Monty needs to team with Horne and Burke to get rid of the Flaccid Fool. If Monty really wants to show that he hasn't been bought and paid for by the MCSO shurf, he'd grow a pair and team with Horne and Burke and indict this stupid old man.

Mr. Lemons, well said. "What a pathetic joke."

Lt. Brian Lee says:"No, as usual you will not be allowed in. I honestly do not understand why you insist on doing things like this when it affects the safety and security of our employees. The MCSO needs a fucking overhaul, ASAP. We need ethical, disciplined police officers who actually care about the uniform and doing the job..... That isn't to say that there aren't professionals at MCSO who actually do their jobs and earn their pay. There are. We need to be rid of the bad officers like Lt. Lee, Fox, Hendy, Black, the Flaccid Fool, etc......

Piss on Seagal, he's a piss poor actor anyway.

And I'm not sure if Arpaio has all his marbles....jail conditions suck...he fights letting the feds have access...yet he allows in Seagal film crew?

One, our jail conditions as they currently are....are not something we should be flaunting.

Two, shouldn't Arpaio be concerned that "evidence" of jail conditions might be filmed and that he could find himself in even hotter water?

Arpaio brought the EFFN TANK to apprehend 1 suspect and 130 cocks...I wonder how much we taxpayers paid for this media stunt, oops, mission. Shouldn't Seagal's show be paying us for the use of our resources, and reimbursing us for the staff time charged to this "op," and for the time of the people that were brought in to cover the shop while Arpaio and crew were pimping for Seagal's cameras. I hope the idiocy of bringing the tank to this shoot comes through when this episode airs...we have an image to maintain.

On the scoop from the Feathered Bastard, three of us went to Arpaio-land today to see the press conference/dog and pony show. Upon driving on seemingly public road, we stopped in a gravel surfaced parking lot across from two TV news vans. this is an open area where people park to come to see people who are detained in the MCSO gulag. It is an open road ciruclation area, not different from any other public road except that it enters to an entrance to Arpaio's jail. There were no postings of private property, nothing indicating we were outside of public property.Near the two TV news vans, we didn't see a crowd gathering so we sat in our car while we contemplated how to procede. Within five minutes of parking in the parking lot, a squad of three or four SUV type vehicles surrounded us. There were at least half a dozen MCSO deputies in commando type outfits surrounding the car and then one approached asking for IID, questioning our presence in the parking lot. We responded we were there to observe the Press Conference. The deputy took the driver's ID and we exited the vehicle. Within seconds there were seemingly numerous cameras filming with black vests identifying "Film Crew" and moving towards us with cameras and overhanging sound equipment as the deputies questioned us separated from one another.

Amongst those approaching was the posse member Steven Seagal. He was within 10 to 15 feet of me for the entire time we were detained in the parking lot, but I did not talk with him, but the two others who were with me did talk to Seagal while I was separate. I recognized him with a "Sheriff" identification on the back of his camoflauged jump suit. He had guns on his waist, guns on his lower leg, a vest with guns, and who know what else. On a personal note, he was tightly packed into the jump suit, he clearly was a washed out actor, I could see the dyed black hair cropping out of the side of his balll cap that was turned backward, 80's style, making him look like a great big old kid.

The lead deputy said he could search any vehicle on the property. He had asked 'if there were any weapons, bazookas, drugs or anything else they should know of.' They immediately began rifling through the vehicle. I saw them opening billfolds from the glove compartment that were completely empty. Then when they tried to open the hatchback, the stuff started to fall out, so they quickly closed it, apparently not wanting to have a mess of stuff fall all over the place.

I was asked to put my hands on my head while the deputy in commando gear frisked me and stood with a hand on his weapon while I made a phone call to an attorney. I spoke with the attorney telling him of our situation. Meanwhile the other two were in conversation with Seagal, with cameras filming and sound equipment placed overhead to capture voice.

I estimate there were up to 15 individuals surrounding us, including a young woman with a vest indicating "Film Crew" taking notes, later she approached me and asked me to sign a waiver asking for permission to release rights to be filmed. I refused, but she took notes on my appearance, then asked the other two who also refused to waive rights to be filmed. She identified herself that they were with A & E.I looked out across the other parking lots across the road and saw more MCSO deputies with lights flashing in the parking lot and appearing to stop and search others in the parking lot. Film crews seemed to be near those others being searched as well. Up to 30 or so MCSO deputies were assigned to descend upon the public at about time Arpaio was starting his 5pm news conference. Later as we left, we drove past Arpaio who was holding court with about 25 or 30 hovering around him near a gate to the Jail/Tent City.

My friend told me of his conversation with Seagal. Seagal said "99% of the Mexicans who are immigrants are criminal. They sell drugs, they kill and commit other crimes" and my friend told Seagal he completely disagreed. He told him that Arpaio was separating families and persuing migrants who have families and work hard to support them and they society where they live. Seagal also said that he and Arpaio have a perception that anti-Arpaio protestors are making money. Seagal indicated that their intented to identify and prosecute anyone whom they perceive as paid, but there was no one who did this for pay, only justice and morality.

We apparently did not interest the MCSO enough to have our vehicle completely ransacked and sifted through. I knew there was no drugs, weapons or any unlawful items in the vehicle. But we were released after 10 or 15 minutes. It was suggested that it would not be wise to protest Arpaio within these grounds. I responded that it never was our intention to protest in this area.

As we drove out of Arpaio-land I saw jail prisoners lined up in what might have been the complete search, the reported purpose of Arpaio's dog and pony show for the press.

It seemed the true reason for this spectacle tonight was to give the two bit has been, overstuffed wanna-be action figure Seagal, something for his A & E program. It will prove to be a flop, just like the other two taxpayer funded Arpaio 'reality' TV shows, Fox's "Smile You're Under Arrest" and "Real Woman Cops of the MCSO."

Arpaio is not Ceasar, but to streach a metaphor, Arpaio is not only playing fiddle while Rome burns, he is throwing gasoline on the fire.

I simply don't understand why the MCSO shurf insists on wearing four stars. As if he is something special. Even Babeu is smart enough to replace them with "Sheriff".

Geez.... how transparent can they be, when they are trying to be transparently non-transparent?

As Gerry_C says, "Don't think of elephants".

Just one more chapter from the MCSO Spin Machine, 2011 Edition.

Lt. Lee, give it up and go get yourself a patrolman's job with a professional law enforcement agency. You will then be able to look at yourself in the mirror.

Buncha dipshits at MCSO...

(My apologies to those professionals who are stuck working there and can't afford to leave)

Where is the report on the investigation by Pinal Cty? It's over due, and with the rate that Joke is having shows of his media circus acts, I'm wondering if he's trying to distract from the report!

"I honestly do not understand why you insist on doing things like this when it affects the safety and security of our employees."

Putting that out there is what compromises the safety and security of the jail if it is truly compromised. It is as if I emailed a whole herd of people and told them that I left a million dollars in my car at Baseline and 40th street, but please don't tell anybody about it until 5 because I need to get back to get it.

This is nothing more than information management. Some chosen reporters get the exclusive on it at 5 when it goes down. They want everybody to cover it, so they send it to everybody with the embargo request.

Well well... a washed up actor joining forces with a washed up sheriff. Apraio can't stand it that "There's a new Sheriff in town.. Paul Babeu" so now this pathetic attempt to capture scraps of media on a slow news day is evidence that his PR machine (Lisa Allen) is not doing all she should be doing.. BTW.. Welcome back from your trip to CALIF, Lisa. Hope you got some nice R&R on our dime to come up with new publicity stunts for the sheriff, because this is getting boring and old.. yawn.

I thought the 130 cocks also had posse badges. But there were some roosters, which were later served as "chicken surprise" in Tent City.

So, let me get this right, it's okay for Seagal to make money from this bullshit, but anyone else who might be getting paid would be prosecuted? I'm assuming Seagal's not working for free...

And we know Arpaio's "profiting" from this show. He's getting free airtime, on our dollar, for which he should be prosecuted. If he can charge a retiring judge with profiting from the benefits new court tower without a shred of evidence...hell, we've got this one in the bag! It's on film!

And as for intimidating...oops, I meant, "telling" people it would not be wise to protest, now Pearce and Arpaio get to trample the 1st amendment? Only on TV....oh, woops, that's right, this IS reality here in Ariozna

I especially like the "helping hand" Arpaio has given our economy...3 Pei Wei restaurants are temporarily closed...so the restaurants aren't making money, the city and state aren't getting sales and payroll taxes from closed restaurants....

Since Omar Bradley died in 1981, there have been no five-star General Officers in the U.S. military. Four stars is as high as it goes. The rank of "General" is earned over a career of discipline, honor, integrity, leadership, management, intelligence, perseverance, toughness, assertive personal presence, and some politics and luck along the way. The rank commands respect as it should. I think the old fart read everything I just said about the four-star rank and only comprehended the part about "commands respect."

Maybe he thinks he's a 4-star general in the Army.....or maybe his Alzheimers' and dementia kicked in and he forgot he was wearing them.....

Stacy, you make a good point. I thought it very odd last week or so when I saw a tv report of Babeu making an appearance before a Scottsdale women's club of some sort. I suppose regarding immigration issues. So, why wasn't an intelligent command officer from MCSO invited instead of the sheriff from Pinal County? Oh, none could be found. Got it... sorry....

I don't care for Babeu, personally, but at least he maintains a professional appearance, unlike the four star make believe from MCSO...

XSoldier

Actually, President Ulysses S. Grant was another 5 star general in military history. The rank now means General of the Army (GOA). In 1864, the rank had 4 stars......

Other than that, well said.

Gerry_C
Gerry_C

Hey XS,

No issue with your comments. You are correct, I just meant that we had had no "living" five-stars since the death of Bradley. Further, without a world conflict, I doubt we will see any more five-stars in the foreseeable future. I certainly was not trying to slight Grant, Pershing, MacArthur, Eisenhower, Arnold, Marshall, and a few others that slip my mind.

Sometimes I wonder if we will have a five-star Shurf before long?
