Arizona Boycott On Like Donkey-Kong, Say Pro-Immigrant Groups

Puente's Sal Reza, and others, want the boycott of Sand Land to continue

In the wake of the defeat of five anti-immigrant bills in the state Senate last week, there's been some question about whether the boycott of Arizona over Senate Bill 1070 should continue.

There's no doubt that the boycott has been effective. Both the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce cited harm done to Arizona businesses by the boycott as the reason each organization has actively lobbied against anti-birthright citizenship legislation, and other anti-immigrant proposals pushed by state Senate President Russell Pearce.

Last week, pro-immigrant attorney and activist Danny Ortega, chairman of the board of directors for the National Council of La Raza, announced at a press conference that the boycott committee formed locally would consider lifting the boycott if those five bills stay dead.

As a motion to reconsider was not made on Monday of this week on the Senate floor, the bills in their current forms are moribund. However, they could be brought back in other ways through the chicanery of Pearce and his allies.

Now the Arizona human rights group Puente, headed by activist Sal Reza, has called a press conference for 10 a.m. today at the state Capitol to announce that Puente and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network stand behind continuing the boycott.

Puente's press release states:

"The Boycott will intensify and continue until SB1070 and other anti-migrant laws are repealed." Said Raul Cordero. Raul has been actively boycotting business associated with financing anti-migrant legislators in their election and reelection bids. "These legislators have taken Arizona to the brink of disaster causing major economic losses with their anti-human campaigns against workers and law abiding residents of Arizona." Concluded Isabel Garcia from Tucson

There have been statements by local activists groups to the fact that the boycott would be lifted if the bills were not reconsidered.. The Barrio Defense Committees with more than 20 active chapters in Maricopa, NDLON (National Day Labor Organizing Network) with 40 member organizations nationwide, Derechos Humanos, International Action Center based in Tucson and others to be disclosed at Press Conference will be present to declare the intensification of the Arizona Boycott.

The New York Times took notice of the Arizona legislative change regarding five anti-migrant bills. However, it also noted; "While it is a relief to see realizing that bigotry is bad for business, it is not the end of harsh, shortsighted laws." The Editorial concluded, "it's important to note that none of the objections by Arizona's businesses had anything to do with the strong moral arguments against xenophobic anti-immigration bills."

The boycott will continue until SB1070 is thrown into the trash bin of History.

There have been legitimate disagreements over the boycott, which I have supported as a cudgel to beat Arizona's redneck politicians into line. For instance, my colleague, Phoenix New Times music editor Martin Cizmar has been vocal in his criticism of Sound Strike, the music boycott of Arizona led by Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha.

While I respect the views of Cizmar, and certainly of Ortega, for whom I have great admiration, I don't think the war is over just because one battle has been won.

It's not for me to decide if the boycott should continue, of course. That's the purview of the activists. But until Russell Pearce is removed from power and the tide of hate in this state is reversed, the pressure on Arizona to change its ways should continue, whatever form that pressure takes.

Is this law Racist? Does it specify brown people? Are the people who agree with this law racist? Are those who want this law enforced racist? The law says nothing of little "brown" people but it explains what is illegal entry. It's not very hard to understand. Why is this law "broken"? Why can it be selectively ignored?Illegal alien includes all people who entered illegally, could be Croation, Russian, Chinese, Irish, Canadians and yes even Mexicans. No one single race or people is referenced in the law. Under Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code, "Improper Entry by Alien," any citizen of any country other than the United States who:Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers; or Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact; has committed a federal crime.Violations are punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment for up to six months. Repeat offenses can bring up to two years in prison. Additional civil fines may be imposed at the discretion of immigration judges, but civil fines do not negate the criminal sanctions or nature of the offense.

Their original subject was "illegal" immigration. Now the pro's and the anti's have been made into anti-immigration or pro-immigration. Also, slip in some anti-migration and pro-migration. All three terms mean different things. The story is a big pile of journalistic cow shit that can't even keep it's subject straight. It's propaganda, it's devisive and detrimental to the common people. They're trying to split us apart by using hate, fear and non sensical arguements. Who pays the New Times to promote rascism and hatred? Not us. Who runs this country? Not us. Who will benefit from the hate and rascism the New Times promotes? That's right...not us. Follow the money. Where do these up in your ass groups get their money from? The majority of it comes from those who run this country and that's not us.

Walter...just one (2 part) question, you say- "The majority of it comes from those who run this country and that's not us."

Who are those and WHO is US ?....sorry I'm slow =D

How can anyone hate and call him/herself a follower of Christ and a worshiper of God? In the Old Testament, God told the Israelites to be kind to foreigners living among them because they themselves were once slaves and foreigners in Egypt and had been mistreated. I'm a liberal and a Bible believing Christian, but what I don't do is pick and choose the parts of the Bible that I will/will not follow/obey. I accept it all as the word of God.

Well said! Respect for the human dignity of all should be foremost in our daily life. The boycott must continue until SB1070 isburied eight feet under.

I thought this quote by President Theodore Roosevelt was quite interesting:

"We must Americanize in every way, in speech, in political ideas and principles, and in their way of looking at relations between church and state. We welcome the German and the Irishman who becomes an American. We have no use for the German or Irishman who remains such... He must revere only our flag, not only must it come first, but no other flag should even come second."

And keep in mind that President Theodore Roosevelt was in office from 1901-1909. This quote is from 1894. 4 years before the U.S Supreme Court ruling that Pearce & Co. want to undo.

First and foremost, I'd like to point out that the DREAM Act, legislation that was introduced in Congress in 2001, has FAILED EVERY YEAR for 10 YEARS!!! It has become quite apparent that people really don't want the illegals here. Even Congress wants birthright citizenship stripped for the illegals and has introduced legislation to do so.

Secondly, I would NEVER support the DREAM Act because it does nothing to benefit me.

Thirdly, just because Governor Jan "Have Did" Brewer says the economy is cranking over doesn't mean she's telling the truth. We elected these people to RID us of the illegals.

Fourth, the boycott damaged Arizona beyond reproach. We need to balance how to rid ourselves of the illegals while getting and keeping jobs here. For that, I propose rounding up all the illegals and put THEM to work securing the border. Imagine how quickly a border fence would go up. Any illegal caught crossing volunteers as border security. We don't have to pay them anything because they volunteered to cross. 12 million illegals working to secure the border. We'd have border security. They want jobs, we want a secure border. Sounds good, no?

TeoBuneo
TeoBuneo

Perhaps you should get out your handy little dictionary when writing such pity comments X. I believe you substituted reproach for repair in your fourth point. Actually it might not do you much good since your thinking is so blatantly fascistic that you probably are beyond redemption. I have a proposal for you and the rest of your loony friends, why don't you all move to Saudi Arabia, they have very strict immigration controls that would suit you perfectly. Of course you will have to convert to Islam and wahabbism at that, but from the way you spout your ridiculous nonsense I know that you and all your hater pals would fit right in with those Islamic facists.

XSoldier
XSoldier

I'm merely making a point. People here are bitching that the feds are not doing their job in securing the border. That was the reasoning behind bills like 1070.

Also, why should America bend over for the illegals when any American would be subject to some other country's immigration laws? The people want a secure border, and the people want to be rid of illegals. What better way to provide both?

LT
LT

The tide of hate is coming from La Raza and any pro-illegal immigration groups. It's certainly not coming from anti-illegal immigration groups. It's easy to jump on the band-wagon and scream racism when you are the racist. Stop the hate mongering and if you are here illegally go back to where you came from. Then you can apply for citizenship like any other legal immigrant who has what you don't... the right to be here and my support!

EXACTLY! Don't preach about Arizona being a hate state unless you are talking about the racist ILLEGALS and their backers like La Raza = The Race? Please! There is nothing racist about wanting the rule of law followed. There is something VERY racist with promoting Aztlan and telling Latino youth to hate the old white people. Telling whites to go back to Europe is as racist as it gets! Get an effing clue!!!

Temoc

"There is nothing racist about wanting the rule of law followed."

Since you want the 'rule of law followed', you obviously oppose SB 1070 right? SB 1070 violates the SUPREMACY CLAUSE of the U.S. Constitution - the supreme law of the land! SB 1070 makes it a STATE crime to be an illegal immigrant in Arizona - when federal law stipulates that it is a civil (not criminal) violation.

Let me guess; the 'States Rights' legal doctrine grants Arizona the right to flaunt federal law (i.e. U.S. Constitution) - but Utah is not not entitled to the same 'States Rights' - right?

Bottom line; the whole wanting the 'rule of law' is the same argument used against fugitive SLAVES! Against women voting! Against non-whites violating racial segregation laws!

Hey Sal Reza, so its cool if I come and rob you, steal all your money, eat all your food, take all your clothes (not that they would fit me because I'm not a lazy out of shape fatass like you) and you would be perfectly ok with it? What? Why not? I just want a better life. Fucking loser. Illegal is not a race or skin color, it is a crime, just like murder or rape you stupid pile of shit. VIVA sb1070. Just come to America LEGALLY and there won't be a problem. Become a citizen, get a social security number to help pay taxes and help pay for the public services that you leeching cowards are using. Its not that difficult, it is the law, abide by it or get the fuck out.

You fucking treasonous bastard have the gall to act outraged at Sal Reza while wearing a handle calling for the failure of the US government. You are beyond belief. You sir are the Fucking Loser here! You smarmy little worm don't have a clue what Mexican people have to go through to immigrate to this country legally, but what does that matter anyhow since you promote the failure of the US government. Drop dead asshole.

I'm sure your participation in the " boycott" is instrumental to it's success. There is no empirical evidence that the boycott propaganda has been even remotely effective. Ride the coattails and take credit for the fruits of the recession.

Proud Arizona Native
Proud Arizona Native

I can't believe the audacity of taking credit for this boycott when it was nothing more than timing of the severe downturn in the economy.

Temoc
Temoc

I have mixed feelings about the boycott. Too many apolitical or progressive Joe/Jane business owners (and their worker bees) end up affected. If the boycotts specifically targeted companies in bed with people like ruSSell pearce and/or joe 'EL DUCE' arpaio, then boycotts would be great imo.

That said; we must have a non-violent way to resist the ever more egregious depredations of the Arizona HATE machine. Of course, to finally bury them in the dustbin of history, we must beat them at the POLLS! Granted that may be a tall order (at present) in the state of Arizona, but Arizona is just one of 50 states!

Proud Arizona Native
Proud Arizona Native

It was made perfectly clear last November that ARIZONANS want an end to ILLEGAL immigration. You want a progressive, bleeding heart agenda, move to another state because we ain't leaving!

Temoc
Temoc

Not sure how to put this gingerly, but I realize the RW kooks in Arizona and throughout the nation are not leaving. However, if you peruse the crowds spewing vitriol at rallies in support of ruSSelL pearce or joe 'EL DUCE' arpaio, you will quickly notice that their most salient feature is their 'blue hair'! Hence, as nature takes its course over the next decade (not that I am wishing ill upon anyone - karma thing), Arizona's HATE politics will wane.

You see, the young people are not as receptive to overt messages of HATRED as the 'blue hairs'. Hence, it will not be long (decade?) before progressives have the chance to put the death knell in Arizona's HATE politics - and that means defeating the RW kooks AT THE POLLS!!!

I love my Gente and I have tons of respect for Sal Reza and yes I would do every thing to help my people but to boycott is just not for me, it dose hurt us in the long run just it has done in the past but as I said i'm down for any thing so if this is what we have to do then so be it!

When dealing with a pariah like Arizona, a boycott is incredibly cheap to launch and maintain: A very few thousand dollars for postage, phone calls and a few trips out of town. Cancelled conventions, cancelled contracts, cancelled expansions and the "don't bother to bid" atmosphere Arizona companies get in California, Chicago, Boston, New York and other large markets.

Meantime, Utah has their Compact and the invitation to meeting planners and businesses wide open with the selling point: We're not crazy.

Brewer spending $250 thousand literally won't make a dime's worth of difference.

When you find a winning strategy, you don't slink away from it. You double down and go hard. We can't stop a working boycott of Arizona until it is a safe and just place for ALL of the people who call it home.

You didn't finish your statement, amigo.. you meant to finish with: Unless, OF COURSE, they're not legal residents! Meaning not just born to illegals, too... for they shouldn't be considered citizens either...

I don't agree with Mr. Reza on this. I think the initial boycott has done what it was intended for. But, it's also cost a lot of people a lot of jobs and caused many people to move elsewhere. Pearce is on his way out. That was evidenced by his failure to get his five hate bills passed this past week.

By stopping the boycott our economy can improve and we will have more funds available to fight our fight. AND fewer people will have to leave our state....

Mr. Lemons. let us not forget that most of this started with the Flaccid Fool of MCSO. Removing pearce is merely the first step. If we could get pearce and arpio into lockstep doing the perp walk, that would be a sight for sore eyes, indeed....

I agree with Salvador Reza & the Puente Movement. There are so many discriminatory policies in Arizona. The Governor's terrible attempt to balance the budget has nothing but slash social services. Arizona is the epicenter of economic inequality & racism. We can't give up after a small victory. The boycott must continue!

Arizona is not being racist with bills like sb1070 as they do not state specific race. Have you read the bill? Probably not. I bet all you read was azcentral or this shithole phoenixnewtimes that twisted the bills words and fed you a bunch of lies. The only reason so many brown people are in an uproar over this is because they are the majority that are guilty. Why can't you roaches just come to America LEGALLY? Why can't you just follow the laws? Why is it ok for mexico to strictly enforce their immigration laws but America cannot? FUCK YOU. LEECHES and COWARDS with no dignity. Thats all you are, just remember that.

The Government has no business involving themselves in social services. People would not allow those in need to go without assistance. Kick the Government out and watch people organize to assist one another legitimately. In doing so we will rid ourselves of the cancer of entitlement.
