Andrei Cherny New Arizona Democratic Chair, Tea Bagger Tom Morrissey New Arizona GOP Chair (w/Update)

Someone has reposted the video that was jerked below

The AZ Repugs new Tea Bagger chairman, Tom Morrissey

Note: See Updates below...

It's been a good day for the Democrats, in more ways than one.

Ex-Democratic state treasurer candidate Andrei Cherny beat out failed U.S. Senate Candidate Rodney Glassman for the chairmanship of the Arizona Democratic Party, 279 to 232.

There was a sometimes-contentious debate on the floor regarding party bylaws and whether or not Cherny was qualified to run.

Ultimately, however, state committee members voted down language that would have excluded Cherny, and agreed to accept him as a credentialed candidate.

I'll have more to say later, but both men gave good speeches. Cherny's, however, was the most heartfelt, hearkening back to growing up poor, with immigrant Czech parents who had to rely on welfare and food stamps to get by. And I think this swayed some undecideds in his direction.

There are some wackadoodle, so-called "progressives" who I hear may challenge Cherny's credentials, either in court or to the Democratic National Committee. If they do, I predict they will: 1) look like selfish idiots; and 2) lose.

But I'll write more about that later.

The Arizona GOP elected Tea Bagger extremist Tom Morrissey to be their new state chair. Morrissey emerged the victor in a four-man race that included the far more qualified Ron Carmichael, who's from the non-crazy wing of the Republican Party.

For Dems, Morrissey will be fun to have around. Already there have been some ugly accusations leveled at him under the name of an ex-wife on the conservative Sonoran Alliance blog. Sadly SA has already taken them down.

However, Morrissey responded to them in the video above.

Waiting for that video to be pulled by Morrissey in one...two...three...

UPDATE January 23, 2011: As predicted, either Morrissey or his supporters yanked the video. However, Morrissey had issued a letter, which mirrored the statements in the video. First saw it at Tucson Weekly, and I'm reproducing it below.

Also, since Sonoran Alliance is apparently censoring certain comments related to this issue, I'm offering below a few recent comments from an SA blog post announcing Morrissey's win. Enjoy.

2nd Update, same day: The same video has been reposted by someone else, so I've embedded it above.

From Sonoran Alliance comments:

"fishnet Says:

Let's see this guy has had 5 wives, beats
the 4th, will not get support for money,
no respect for somebody that comes in
within days of the election, Rob Haney
and Randy Pullen planned this with
Bruce Ash a couple of months, did not
attend meetings, oh yeah, so proud!! I
will be going independent. These people
don't care about you!! They care about
power."

"Mary Wells Prioleau Says:

Thanks 'fishnet' as well as those who posted close to 40 deleted responses on this site Thursday... those who had the guts to reach within and question merits of what constitutes a conservative and/or Christian. Sonora Alliances post re: me, after deleting all related posts remains beyond alarming. Especially since I did respond and offer to provide verification. (As I type...I fully expect another 'awaiting moderation' and then to see my comment deleted as before) So very sorry for the state of affairs in AZGOP. For the record, I did not wait until the 11th hour to voice facts that are of record throughout Maricopa and Chandler courts. John McComish, Randy Pullen and Fulton Brock each received factual letters accompanied by substantiating documents 6/08. Goes without saying that Sheriff Joe, best man in farce wedding, has always been in the mix. For the record: I am not affiliated with the McCain team in any respect. Rather, I allowed myself to care about our nation and reluctantly spoke up responding only to surface issues I sincerely regret having been party to. FYI: Restraining Order in Chandler COurt was issued 8/09 by Tom's friend with reason for court order being 9 emails whereas I stated he was a waste of energy and oxygen and I awaited reading his obituary and the knowledge that he could no longer dupe others. RO prevented personal contact only and expired 9/10. Go figure..5'5″, 125 vs 6′ 190lbs.... 2500 miles away... Never a threat. I did't bother contesting as it would have cost me money to come to AZ and it is my most sincere desire to never, ever again have contact with him. So sorry for choices made by AZGOP today. Your new leader, and this site, stated legal action was in the works.. REALLY... chancing facts being exposed...REALLY..."

Morrissey's response to allegations, from Tucson Weekly's Web site:

1/20/2011

From the desk of Tom Morrissey

My twenty years of honorable service as a United States Marshal, culminating as the Chief Deputy Marshal for Arizona, taught me that false charges must be answered decisively.  Therefore, I will "cut to the chase."  With the exception of the fact that I have had unsuccessful marriages, including one that I had to place a restraining order, all other charges, innuendos and accusations recently placed by person or persons unknown in the Sonoran Alliance under the name of the above ex-wife who lives more than three thousand miles away, are totally and unequivocally false.

Just as Russell Pearce was attacked in 2006, Randy Pullen was the victim of a false attack just before the 2004 State Convention and JD Hayworth was pilloried in the last Primary election cycle, this is another attack by the establishment machine not only to discredit a conservative competitor, but more distressing it is designed to discourage anyone from even thinking about going up against them.

The commenter who posted the false allegations seems to have very intimate knowledge of people who were not even politically active on the local political scene when my former wife last resided here nearly five years ago.  How very ironic that this scurrilous attack occurred only hours after I announced as a candidate for Arizona Republican Chairman.  Just the fact that these personal attacks have occurred against multiple other grass roots candidates over the last few years gives one adequate reason to suspect what is going on behind the scenes.

I have fought against some of the most hardened criminals in America during my years as a marshal and will not be intimated by these personal attacks.  This is truly despicable behavior and makes me even more determined to stand up for all ordinary and conservative folks who want to save their country.

Thank you

Hmm.... he appears "normal' ... so what, he's been married a few times and has an angry ex wife. At least he doesn't have a history of blowing up buildings and covering up murders of gay lovers...

Lynne Breyer, President of Greater Phoenix Tea Party Patriots said. “If you are a state committeeman, I want you to know that the new candidate, Tom Morrissey is a good friend of ours and he’s a foe of McCain big time. One never knows, but I’m pretty confident that he will do a great job if elected. He’s been very impressed by the tea party although he is a member of none.”

Morrissey is not Tea Party.

Lynne, it's interesting that on several blogs I see references to 'your husband' being one of Tom's closest friends dating 20+ years. Funny that I've never heard of you or y'all and I have over 23 years of correspondences with Tom, as well as 5 years day in and day out, relating to his feelings re: the party and how 'he was abandoned'. Of course, I'll easily concede to the fact that Tom suffers greatly from delusions of grandeur and the belief that he can 'shout' demands of others in great contrast to his own life and actions... "FOE OF MCCAIN BIG TIME" are you kidding.. Tom's sole focus politically is to destroy McCain. Are you not aware of the fact that McCain appointed Tom as U.S. Marshal/AZ in 2002 and the appointment was before senate clearance... then, Tom outwardly supported Janet N for Governor and McCain withdrew his appointment; humiliating Tom...Have you never seen the letters written by Tom and wife #3. Do you really not have a clue. I do... I know the facts and have lived them. Tom will reinvent himself time and again, at the expense of all gullible folks he can suck in his pocket, solely to get back at McCain. YOU and all the silly folks who accepted him at face value and fed in to his narcissitic ventures should be ashamed! Family values? Did you bother to check his? Clearly not...5 marriages; Orders of Protection against him; Abortions; Domestic Violence: Extended family (genetic) diagnosis; financial stability...., Beyond sad! Thinking if I were you... I'd invest my energies in a more positive and reliable pursuit. Your post is beyond laughable considering I know the truth and feel confident that the same will be told when the timing is right. Excuse me for caring without an agenda and having integrity!

Well Stephen Lemon, you leave a bitter taste in the mouths of those of us opposed to sexual bigotry. "What?" You say! Well it's pretty simple, even enough for you to understand. When you use a term describing a gay sex act, as a perjorative (that's insult, for those in Santa Cruz and Pima Counties), you clearly are denigrating them. It's no different than using the terms "retard", "pollack", or even "n***er". Clearly, YOU are a homophobic bigot!

It's good Cherny raised $100,000 for the Az Dem party since he got $75,000 dollars from them. So maybe the reality is he only raised $25,000 for the AZ Dems

You lost, Randy. Give it up.

So you say.

StephenLemons

Or don't give it up. Just gives me more material to work with. I'd prefer that the Dems go after Republicans. But if some are hell-bent on internecine warfare, so be it. So hurry up and get on the ball, hh. Or Rodney. Or wackadoodle #132. At least if you file, you'll have to identify yourself. And open yourself up to legitimate criticism.

hh
hh

I think that one of the most interesting metrics is fund raising.Andrei Cherny had raised 1,018.247, and Glassman had raised 1,406,934. How ever I think that you should reduce these amounts by their own loans to their campaigns (c-290,000, g-500,000) and the amounts given by the party (c-75000, g-33) you come up with Cherny 653,247, Glassman 906.901

StephenLemons
StephenLemons

And interestingly, Cherny still scored more votes statewide than the hapless (but rich) Glassman:

Cherny: 685,865 votes statewide

Glassman: 592,011

And Cherny was WAY down ticket from Glassman. Glassman was running for U.S. Senate, not state treasurer. He should have been able to raise several times the amounts that Cherny raised, and yet, Cherny's fundraising was bested by Glassman by only about $300K.

Sorry, doesn't cut it, and doesn't rewrite history. Next.

JD
JD

What's your major hard on for Glassman anyway? I like how you wrote he was a "failed" candidate for senate but didn't write that Cherny was a failure himself. Come on, aren't you supposed to be a little more objective as an alleged journalist? At least Glassman has won in the past, in this state. Can't even say Cherny was able to win in a liberal state like California. Should we start writing that you're a failure when it comes to staying on a diet? I wouldn't have cared one way or another on this thing but Cherny broke the rules. Voting aside, the bylaws and possibly state law were violated. Anyone who went along with that is a party to possibly violating state law. You can call me a wackadoodle all you want, but I know I am right. Just because a slim majority agree doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

JD
JD

So if you're so "fair" why didn't you mention that Cherny is a twice failed candidate in two different states? Not just that but he got trounced by a complete unknown (Ducey) who had so many personal problems that it should have been like shooting fish in a barrel. I really regret not nominating Randy Parraz now.

StephenLemons
StephenLemons

"Anyone who went along with that is a party to possibly violating state law." Yep, you best go tell Sheriff Joe, JD, and have 'em all arrested. Your last name wouldn't be "Hayworth," would it?

hh
hh

Doesn't cut what mayonnaise. That 300k is 40 percent more. People were telling me that one of the most important parts of being party chair was raising money.

Bill
Bill

One significant difference is that donations to Cherny's campaign were limited to $840 per person (state law) while Glassman could get ocntributions of $5000/person (federal law). So Cherny's fundraising base had to be significantly broader to reach that level. In addition, according to reports from the state party, Cherny raised over $100,000 for the party (second only to Goddard) while Glassman raised zip for his fellow Dems. Sorry hh, but if fundraising is your metric Cherny wins hands-down.

If you think a state treasurer candidate should raise more than a U.S. Senate candidate, you may have a point. But not in the real world.

After reading (and having my posts deleted) what is going on over on the dark side, someone pointed me over here. Gotta say I am a bit disappointed by the name calling between my fellow Dems. While my feelings were mixed regarding Morrissey's election, one part of me fearing that that Herman Muenster head might explode and the other thinking "Boy are we going to have fun with this." it has been a real let down to find you guys sniping at one another. By the way IMO 'USA defender' sounds like one of Morrissey's alter egos. He thinks of himself as a (cartoon) superhero so when I see names such as 'Capt. Marvel', Avenger, Radical Patriot, it makes me wonder. Or maybe all of the Tea Ballers think of themselves that way. Come on folks. Get it together. You have been handed a great gift! Point those arrows the other way.

The trouble is, the "Progressives" in California and New England run the Democratic Party. It doesn't matter what moderate and Blue Dog Democrats may want, it is the Far Left of the party that rules policy. That has been emphatically proven the past two years.

Hopefully bloggers on the right learn to fling lies like Dodo Bird and MORON Morales do! While its fun to see what you MORONS come up with from time to time, it is sad to see just how many MORONS we have in Phoenix and Tucson who buy the crap you all dish out!

Apparently following and rules and wanting them followed the same as everyone else is considered wackadoodle. Should I tell that to the police when I get pulled over that they're wackadoodle because they want me to follow the law? I wonder if Cherny will tell someone they're wackadoodle when he gets caught making a back door deal with a consulting firm. You know the same consulting firms that work for the Republican party and don't give a s--- about who wins or loses. The same ones that the party has been flushing their money down the toilet with for the past 5 years. But since I believe in following the rules and wanting them applied equally to everyone that makes me a wackadoodle? Rules are in place for a reason, if that's not the case we should have dragged a homeless guy in off the street to run for party chair. He's just as qualified as Cherny.

bobgelder
bobgelder

If JD is representative of the Democratic Party in AZ, it is little wonder why they keep getting their asses kicked by Russell and his ilk. I know nothing of the workings of any political party and I'm registered as independent so I can participate in any primary. If I were a member of the Democratic party no supporter of 1070 would ever even be considered for party chair without regard for "rules".

JD
JD

If you knew the inner workings you'd see how the current group in power will continue to drag the party down even further. They only care about lining the pockets of a few consultants, attorneys and making sure certain people get elected while others like Andrew Sherwood and Rebecca Rios get ignored. When you compare Glassman to Cherny there's a few things that you need to really look at. Glassman has actually held public office and successfully run a winning campaign. Cherny has not. Glassman has been in Arizona for a very long time, Cherny is a transplant here having lost his previous bid for office in California. Glassman ran a campaign and lost horriby against a guy who's an institution in Arizona and had just run for president. Cherny lost badly to a political unknown even with all of his alleged resources at his disposal. That says a lot, and I'd have been willing to vote for Cherny despite that, but his blatant disregard for the rules and the arrogance around him made me choose otherwise.

hh
hh

The actual vote does not reflect the sentiment that almost everyone thought Glassman would be a disastrous choice.

StephenLemons
StephenLemons

Cherny has never come off as arrogant to me. Glassman on the other hand has rubbed A LOT of people the wrong way.

You say, "Cherny is a transplant here having lost his previous bid for office in California..." And so what? Russell Pearce has been here all his life. Not saying Glassman is Pearce, but how long exactly would he have to live here to qualify in your opinion?

First, members of the state committee voted against excluding someone with Cherny's credentials. Then they voted to accept someone with Cherny's credentials. Then they voted for Cherny over Glassman. Didn't they also do a hand count? Sheesh.

Sounds like democracy in action to me. Parliamentary procedure was followed to the letter. And still you kvetch.

Almost everyone I spoke with -- even those persnickety about the rules -- agreed on one thing: Glassman would be a disastrous choice.

Fortunately, this was avoided. Now go forth and battle Republicans. If Cherny doesn't do a good job, you can throw him out in two years.

OneBlueAZ
OneBlueAZ

No JD, you're a wackadoodle because you lack the basic intelligence and common sense to understand that you do no have the final say in what the rules are. The party heard your side AND the other side. We decided that your interpretation was wrong.

I understand you don't like that. I understand that you are so awesome the whole party should have bowed down to your interpretation. But thankfully, the vast majority of us decided that your interpretation was about making sure that Rodney didn't have to actually face any competition. You don't care about the rules. You just want to subvert the democratic process for your own benefit and ego. You should be ashamed to call yourself a Democrat. Your tactics on Saturday were right out of the TeaBagger playbook. When you don't get your way we whine and scream like a petulant child. If Rodney Glassman has any class he will tell you to kindly sit down and shut up.

Randy Parraz would have been a better choice instead of Glassman or someone who thinks he's above the rules. The Arizona Democratic party rears it's ugly racist head again. We like to get the Hispanic vote but the rest of the time they don't exist. Since Andrei didn't have to follow the rules we should have nominated Randy Parraz since he'd be just as eligible. Has nothing to do with one candidate over another and everything to do with following the law. Be a shame if Andrei was kicked out due to being ineligible. Actually no it wouldn't. Let's get Randy Parraz in there. Talk about REAL change.

Bill
Bill

Randy considered making inroads for the ED position at one point, but not the State Party Chair. That same gentleman also intimidated and threatened everybody on the Dem Credentials Committee with lawsuits saying they were corrupt. These same people on the credentials committee were just doing there job and many did not vote to avoid the image of impropriety. However, we lost successful Dem Leaders over this jack---'s threats.

OneBlueAz
OneBlueAz

If this isn't the same wackadoodle...they share the same stunning lack of understanding of the facts. Some people only hear what they want. I hope Mr. Parraz throws his name in the hat in 2013. He would add an important voice to the discussion that we need to hear from. I wish he would have sought guidance on his own eligibility before declining to run.

Having three strong candidates firing up the party is 50% better than having two. However, having two strong candidates firing up the party is INFINITELY better than having one...as our wackadoodle would have preferred.

OneBlueAZ
OneBlueAZ

The particular wackadoodle is a numbskull, who went about threatening everybody because the majority of the state party didn't find his shennanigans either compelling or amusing. I am confident Rodney wouldn't want this type of undemocratic behavior to be apart of his campaign and I am confident he will show enough class to tell this pathetic whiner to stop the histronics. Get back to work.

Other than the cry baby who thought this day was about him, Democrats in Arizona have a lot to celebrate about. We had two smart, hardworking young men with nothing but upside stand up and show fire in their bellies and real leadership. No matter who won the Chair race tonight, Democrats across Arizona would have been the winner. In fact up and down the ticket, the Blue Team put together a solid squad. Unlike the Tea-publicans. They had a lose-lose choice. Watching them cannibalize themselves is going to be a lot of fun.

JD
JD

Since Andrei doesn't have to follow the rules I sped home and ignored the speed limit. If he doesn't have to why should I? His election cheapens what it means to become an elected PC and state committee person. It also makes me sad to know that the party would not accomodate Randy Parraz but would do so for Andrei. I would have supported Parraz over Cherny 8 days of the week.

I agree.

Glassman NOW (only now) has a chance to start building credibility among Arizona Democrats. To do so, he will have to pay his dues, figuratively speaking; actually accomplish things that matter for and to Arizonans and do so without continuing to come off as a narcissist. I wish him well in that endeavor. He certainly is no Harry Mitchell or Gabby Giffords... but someday, he might actually make something of himself politically.
