ADL's Jared Loughner Report: Mental Illness, Not Ideology Likely Led To Tragedy

picresized_1294730235_Loughner.jpg
Mental illness, rather than Tea Baggery's likely to blame for Loughner's rampage, says the ADL

Since Saturday's massacre in Tucson, both the left and the right have parsed alleged killer Jared Lee Loughner's YouTube videos, the statements of his supposed school chums, his favorite books (everything from To Kill a Mockingbird to Mein Kampf), and any other scraps of info out there on the guy.

The left has surmised he's your classic anti-government, wingnut Teabagger. The right's labeled him an atheistic, "anarcho-leftist," in the words of former Maricopa County Deputy County Attorney Rachel Alexander, now accused of ethical violations by the Arizona State Bar.

But researchers at the Anti-Defamation League have published an analysis of Jared Lee Loughner's "Internet footprint," and they conclude what Village Voice Media Executive Editor Michael Lacey observed earlier today: Loughner's actions were more the result of mental illness than ideology.

The ADL report, which you can read, here, states, in part:

Loughner's identified on-line writings and videos on sites such as Myspace and YouTube--his "Internet footprint"--are few in number, but do provide some evidence of his state of mind. In addition, it appears that Loughner, using the screen name Erad3, posted writings on the conspiracy-oriented Web site "Above Top Secret." These writings provide more illumination about Loughner's probable mindset in recent months.

Taken together, these writings suggest someone who probably is not associated with any particular extremist groups or movements, but who has a generic distrust of government and a vague interest in conspiracy theories. Additionally, the style and nature of the writings--which are often disjointed, rambling, and semi-coherent--appear consistent with someone suffering from some form of mental illness, such as schizophrenia.

Loughner's writings are typically not coherent enough to make arguments that are possible to follow in the normal sense, but they can serve at least to indicate his areas of interest or fascination. They do not, however, provide any solid body of evidence or any patterns that would seem clearly to point to a particular ideology or belief system as a significant motivating factor.

As the Southern Poverty Law Center's Mark Potok has already observed, some of the language in Loughner's posts echoes a far-right obsession with the gold standard. Potok also found traces of the odd grammar-based conspiracy theories of Wisconsin wackjob David Wynn Miller.

The ADL agrees that Loughner expressed anti-government views. And the ADL notes Loughner's anti-religious views. But I think it correctly observes that what we know of Loughner fails to indicate that he was one of the bugbears of the left or the right.

Interestingly, it was law enforcement that approached the ADL's investigators on this issue, seeking clarification. Also, it's worth noting that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically injured in the Loughner attack, is reportedly Jewish and has served on the Arizona ADL's regional board.

To me, this makes the ADL's analysis that much more credible. Giffords is a friend of the ADL, and yet the ADL is not looking to make hay out of her injury.

Instead, the ADL has dispassionately assessed what's available at this point. Kudos to them for doing so.

Einstein once said, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats --- yet they are still POOR!

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves. There are a whole lot of experts claiming this guy is mentally ill. How many have examined him objectively and comprehensively?

I am not willing to concede that he is insane. His thinking is definitely defective. However is he legally insane?

Now two separate death threats against Gabby Giffords where filed with Pima County Sheriff's department in less that a year prior to Loughner actually acting on his previous threats. The senile Dupnik first denied these previous death threats made be Loughner against Gabby were ever made, let alone reported to his Agency. Now the proof is been discovered. and Dipshit has found it impossible to remove his foot from his fat mouth. By law, PCSO was required to provide protection to Gifford and her staff. There was not one on duty or off duty PCSO Deputy within 5 miles of Gifford the day of the assassination attempt. The blood is on Dipsticks hands, not "talk radio" of "political ideology" The lunatic is and was a registered democrat, who publicly stated numerous times his hatred was aimed at Giffords do to her moderate stance.

Loughner & Dupnic, 2 different extreme poster children for the left wing. The information coming out about Arizona's increasingly derided Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik sounds almost too absurd to be true. Unfortunately for him and everyone else, it is true. The Sheriff, who has become infamous worldwide for innapropriately using a tragedy to push his bizarre left-wing political agenda, is himself a failed man: the father of an admitted drug addict and 'attempted' car thief daughter who was sentenced to years in an Arizona prison in 2007. Dupnik, who turned 75 January 11th, has gone on nearly every news program he can find to misdirect the cause of last weeks massacre; pushing a radical anti-American agenda trying to blame conservatives, talk radio hosts, and free speech itself for a crime which by many accounts, Dupnik himself should have been able to prevent. Perhaps upon closer scrutiny, the world will see that the real reason Dupnik is trying to obfuscate the issues is that he refused to arrest and charge Jared Loughner with drug crimes and for making numerous death threats, all acknowledged incidents which occurred over the past year. The job of a lawman is not to be a Keith Olbermann or Chris Matthews wannabe. The job is not to babble emotional communist style jibberish at press conferences daily. It is to protect the public he is elected and sworn to serve. Any deranged individual who threatens to kill another person should be immediately arrested, detained, and charged with that crime. For some reason, hopefully for which he will be forced to answer to, Sheriff Dupnik and Arizona law enforcement refused to do their job. This allowed Jared Loughner to remain free, buy firearms, and plan his attack, when Loughner was clearly mentally ill and should never have been allowed to purchase guns or ammo. Now we have all seen the horrific outcome of Dupnik's failure to act competently. Perhaps this is why Dupnik has been averting the public's attention from the real issues of this multiple murderous rampage. Perhaps Dupnik, who was just cited for crashing into a car two months ago, is himself mentally unstable or senile, and perhaps he should be criminally charged with official malfeasance or dereliction of duty. The documented threats made by Jared Loughner are documented by both local and national press. Reuters report here, local reports here and here. The Arizona Daily Sun reported "Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats weren't against Giffords, Dupnik said...Pima officials said in a news release that from February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses." According to their website, "The Pima College Department of Public Safety (DPS) is a bona fide criminal justice agency and has its authority granted by the District Board of Governors and Arizona Revised Statutes." They are certified, armed, and "have full peace officer authority and powers of arrest." They list their Chief of Police Stella Bay, and Operations Commander Manny Amado. I don't know why campus police didn't arrest Jared Loughner for making death threats if they occurred on campus, but the department can be contacted here.In 2007, Clarence Dupnik's daughter Mary Louise Alvarez Dupnik, 40 years old at the time, faced numerous charges. She was arrested "on suspicion of unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a dangerous drug, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and an unrelated failure to appear on a charge of having a suspended license." The case is outlined in an AZ Daily Star article 'Sheriff's daughter faces drug charges' dated February 25, 2007. The article states "She was booked into the jail the same day a search warrant was served at a Midtown hotel room where methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, a scale, syringes, pipes and counterfeit money were seized, according to court documents filed Friday. Tucson police would not provide any details Saturday about the incident. Less than three years ago, Mary Dupnik was arrested on a drug paraphernalia charge after police were called to a South Side motel for reports of yelling and banging coming from a room, according to Arizona Daily Star archives. Inside the room officers found marijuana and a pipe, archives show. Authorities said that inside Dupnik's purse they found 17 syringes, a blood-stained "tie band," bandages, antiseptic wipes, a metal spoon and a container with white powdery residue. At that time, Sheriff Dupnik said he had not been in contact with his daughter for many months. He was not available for comment Friday, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. Mary Dupnik, who listed an address in Tombstone, remained in custody Saturday evening; bond was set at $1,200." Apparently, Mary Louise Dupnik didn't have bleeding heart liberal negligent cops to let her off scott free like Jared Loughner had. 'Pima County Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik’s Daughter Sentenced To 2 1/2 Years In Prison', a follow up article explained on May 26, 2007. After police found methamphetamine, cocaine, pot, and paraphernalia in her motel room, Dupnik pleaded guilty to "attempted possession of dangerous drugs." She was sentenced to 1 1/2 years for that, as well as an additional year for "violating her probation for attempted car theft." The Pima County judge who sentenced Dupnik was Stephen C. Villarreal.Five months after Sheriff Clarence Dupnik's daughter was sentenced to prison for drug and other charges, the sheriff gave Jared Loughner a free pass on one of the identical charges: "possession of drug paraphernalia". Loughner was cited in October 2007 but the charge was dropped two months later, after he completed a 'diversion' program'. Exactly one year later, in October 2008, presumably when Mary Louise Dupnik was still behind bars, Loughner "faced a "local charge" in Marana Municipal Court," according to the Arizona Daily Sun. Like his first charge, it was also dismisssed after a diversion program, in March 2009.The Sun notes "It's unclear what the exact charge was." When Dupnik hit his 50 year anniversary in law enforcement on April 30, 2008, The Arizona Daily Star announced that then Governor Janet Napolitano "will speak at a luncheon today in Dupnik's honor." Napolitano, currently referred to as "Big Sis" for her tyrannical measures against the American people and likened to George Orwell's "Big Brother" in the classic novel 1984, is similar to Dupnik in that she fails to comprehend government as the limited servant of the people. It's no surprise that they laud praise on each other at banquets. The Pima County Board of Supervisors proclamed April 30, 2008: SHERIFF CLARENCE W. DUPNIK DAY. They joked during the ceremony that "Whereas, as safety is the Sheriff's first priority, the only time he has shot himself in the foot is while appearing before the Board of Supervisors." Perhaps that needs to be updated now, since Dupnik is being excoriated worldwide by news outlets and commentators, including Fox News Megyn Kelly, who demanded to know why Dupnik is politicizing the Tucson tragedy. The Arizona Daily Star in their Law & Order Briefs November 6, 2010 ran a notice Dupnik cited in crash at Broadway and Swan: "Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik was cited for failure to yield during a car accident in October. Dupnik was coming out of the Walgreens parking lot at Swan Road and East Broadway on Oct. 21, when he hit an incoming car, police reports showed. Dupnik admitted fault and received the citation, according to the police report, and he has since paid the $212 fine." Update: Several days ago, I sent a query to the Pima County Sheriff's Public Information officer Jason Ogan asking if the man who apprehended Jared Loughner was armed. In a follow-up, I also asked if the fact that Loughner's mom worked for the County government had anything to do with the leniency that was reportedly shown to Jared Loughner. Finally, I asked if the Sheriff has investigated claims that the Loughner family attended the same synagogue as Gabrielle Giffords. To date, the Sheriff has not replied to any of these questions. Author's note: How's that for 'vitriol', Sheriff? Are you 'agitated' that your shameful performance and dirty laundry has been aired? Good! I'm glad I got to do it while it's still legal. ;-)

Wrong. Because the mass murderer is a Jew, communist, dope-smoking freak, and not an Aryan, neo-Nazi, NRA hat-wearing redneck, the ADL has shifted gears and taken the stance that it is mental illness only that is the problem here. We can all see through their B.S. They have a Zionist agenda. And it is not respectful of public safety or decency. Or else they would target La Raza and MS-13 just as much as they do the Klan and Skinheads.

Well, we're getting the usual cover-up stories, but this one sounded plausible and we trust the source. Now Lemons and the blogsters can check it out.

We got a release from Associate Miki Booth, who is pretty cool and reliable really. Part of it would not copy and paste from the E-mail, but the researchers claim that Sheriff Dupnik knew of Jared's SMI (severe mental illness) and earlier arrests.

These Associates allege that Jared's Mom works for the PCSO.

Here's the part that I can copy and paste from the release:

"As we discussed perhaps the Attorney General will have some concern over this matter. A possible coverup has been reported involving Sheriff Dupnik in the events surrounding previous death threats made by Jared Loughner. It is alleged that Mr. Loughner was responsible for a series of recent shootings in Arizona.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter. I look forward to a quick response confirming the Attorney General's position."

We got this one from five different Associate mass-mailing outlets. Here's the copy from GerriC7@gmail.com. We let them know that Stephen spells it "Lacey," and got a quick reply,"Fuck the Bird and his spelling." Kinda mean really, but that's how many of them are. Here's the release,

"To The World Press, These are opinions based on known facts. Thanks to PHOENIX NEW TIMES' (www.PhoenixNewTimes.com) MIKE LACY for not taking political advantage of the tragic TUCSON shootings, which seriously wounded U.S. Representative GABRIELLE GIFFORDS. We wish her well and a speedy recovery. LACY's not crying about taking his opponents' guns away or gagging his illiterate redneck opponents like SARAH PALIN. He's also grinning when we call JOE ARPAIO a "little greaseball hick" from Springfield, Massachusetts. Plus, he knows that we're pissed off NEW YORKERS with BIG MONEY CLAIMS against ARPAIO, who will not respond even with a false arrest. MIKE is well aware that it's advantageous to let those loudmouth East Coast maniacs scream. Good choice, MIKE. First Amendment wins, now get to the real issues. LACY astutely blames mental illness and our grossly negligent recognition and treatment of the seriously mentally ill, called "SMI" in Sand Land. Please see http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.c... Unlike his underpaid, sheltered, ond often clueless staff scribes, the native New Yorker LACY still remembers the horrors of the notorious "Willowbrook" state hospital in his home state, as he slams the hellhole in our faces again as a bitter reminder of our failure to confront and treat the problem. LACY also notes that untreated or poorly-treated mental illness fuels chronic homelessness. The guy has a heart. For a man whose day isn't complete unless he's bellowed "Fuck You!" to somebody, OLD MIKE is showing alot of decency, compassion, and respect for The Constitution. We're glad to see this jaded journalist and grizzled gatekeeper back in the fray, because he can help AMERICA right now. We know he's seen the attached HODGES LETTER, and he already is probably fuming about BARRY SOETORO aka OBAMA conspiring with "Geezer G," or GEORGE BUSH, SENIOR, to rip off AMERICA for trillions. LACY may even be enraged enough at the WANTAGATE theft to come out against SOETORO/OBAMA.

We hope." Check out www.BadPhoenixCops.blogspot.co... for the latest on Phoenix police and government corruption.

This horrible tragedy is made worse by the recent actions of the AZ Legislature including Russell Pearce from the right and Kirsten Sinema from the left. By unconstitutionally banning Free Speech and threatening to limit our right to self-defense, the illegal acts of one madman are now being magnified by short-sighted politicians. It would have been far better for throngs of Arizonans to show up and block the despicable lunatics from out of state who wish to disrupt a little girl's funeral, by exercising our own free speech together and with solidarity instead. It is woefully irresponsible for any citizen, especially a public official, not to be armed for self-defense and for the defense of the children, or at least to have armed security present. To further ban our ability to defend ourselves in the face of such evident threats only further illustrates the idiocy from our elected officials. Instead of the playing the blame game here to support our own political agendas, we should all come together to unite behind real solutions. We critically need to overhaul Arizona's mental illness treatment options. I have personally been to the legislature numerous times regarding this very issue and this issue falls mostly upon deaf ears there. Secondly, we need to prevent every criminal, madman, and politician from ever infringing upon our free speech and our right of self-defense.

This is the first fundamental rule of gun safety. If these people were simply doing that one thing, there would be no tragedies. Even with a defective firearm, pointing the muzzle in a safe direction is paramount. People these days are always trying to scapegoat someone else for their failure to take personal responsibility for their own negligent actions.

Did NewTimes show up at the Presidents State of The Union address and yell "Liar" at the president and later use it for a fund raising opurtunity for their re-election bid?

Did NewTimes say they wanted all Minneosotans to be "Armed and Dangerous" or state that if the elections don't go their way we should consider "Second Amendment remedies" in Utah against Harry Reid????

Funny how the ADL have put this down to insanity since it has now been discovered that Loughner is Jewish and not the neo-nazi, antisemite he was made out to be! Strange as well how the mainstream media is conspiring to keep all of this silent. It seems that this "anti jewish" murderer attended the same Chaverim synagogue as Gabrielle Giffords. Watch the first youtube video (if they do not remove it again!) and see the news article belowhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v...http://motherjones.com/politic...

Wow - talk about contorting logic to serve a hidden purpose. While the rest of the world is laughing at Lacey's inept examination of motive, Lemons tries to find a way to give support to his friend and collegue, and in doing so commits one of the most bizzare fails in recent memory.

Here's his logic: because Gifford is reportedly Jewish, she must be a friend of the ADL (because all Jews think alike, according to Lemons) and therefor the ADL is competent to make a determination of intent and motive.

Ultimately, the only thing that can be said is that the Loughner left no traces of anti-Jewish sentiment. Just because he was not antisemetic, however, does not mean he wasn't a wingnut.

While I can appreciate the desire to give cover to a friend who is getting his ass handed to him on a national stage, resorting to cliched logic -- such as making the naked declaration that anyone who is Jewish must thereby be a friend of the ADL -- just further reduces the trust one can have with Lemons.

StephenLemons
StephenLemons

I think you misunderstood, Asdf. I did not say Giffords was a friend of the ADL because she is (reportedly) Jewish, but because she sat on ADL's regional board. I think Bill Straus of the ADL would agree with me here.

In fact, this was part of his initial statement on the tragedy:

"During her years in the statehouse, Rep. Giffords served on the ADL Arizona Regional Board. Her affiliation with ADL, which monitors and exposes hate and extremist groups, contributed to her awareness of the nexus between hate ideology and violence. It is a testament to her dedication to her constituents that despite past threats against her, Rep. Giffords has always been so accessible to the people she represents. Our thoughts and prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords and the other victims and their families."

BTW, I wrote a blog criticizing the effort to "ramp down" the political rhetoric several hours before Lacey posted his.

You're "ramping down" because you're running scared and getting ready for what's coming.Faggot.

why are you calling stephen lemons a faggot? is stephen gay? I hadn't thought about it before, but wouldn't have pegged him as homosexual.

if he's not gay, there's many other derisive and accurate names to call him.

If I had thought about it previously, I'd probably have pegged him as a guy who likes to get pegged.

Stephen, I've known Gabby since her first term in the Arizona House of Reps. She doesn't hide the fact that she is Jewish. There's no need to hedge on that aspect of the situation.

Thanks, Steve. Several sources cite her as being Jewish. And Schapira mentioned her being so on the state Senate floor yesterday. So you're correct that my caution there is unnecessary.

If this had been a Mexican (like many loons were initially reporting) or an African American, there would be no debate over his mental state. Now, to justify this, Loughner is being portrayed as "troubled" and other far more dire descriptions, setting him up for an eventual insanity defense and justifying the unjustifiable.

Truth is, Loughner, and Loughner alone is responsible for this tragedy and it is apparent it was deliberately premeditated. This is a cold and calculating killer that knew exactly what he was doing and planned on how he would do it.

His attraction to American Renassaince <sic> puts him further to the write than to the left.

AR is also a group closely associated to Glenn Spencer, originator of the term and concept of "reconquista" and colleague of Shawna Forde, who we don't need to forget, goes on trial today for the brutal murder of 9 year old Brisenia Flores and her father Raul. Let us never forget that heinous crime.</sic>

Stick your race card where the sun don't shine. In many incidents where non-whites commited such heionous crimes their mental illness was brought up as motive for killing.

There was no evidence that he had any connections to any white nationlists groups. All the people he killed were white for God's sake! There is no evidence that he was a teapartier or a right winger either but leave it to the left to exploit this tragedy for political gain.

WTH has the trial of the murder of this Mexican child have to do with his case? Race card baiting, much?

Not more than a year ago, I'd probably have been inclined to agree with you. But...

How long did it take for the Krentz murder - sans any shred of evidence, based purely on suspicion - to be blamed on an illegal immigrant? By sticking it to this immigrant, our politicians did not single out a single person; they demonized an entire country and race. Nothing has ever been proven in this case nor has anyone questioned the assumed perpetrators mental stability. And, want to talk about a side politicizing an event to fit their means?

I won't get into the kids ties or affiliations or any wacky conspiracy theories. So far they are non existent, nothing is proven and there's no facts to support anything other than he is clearly not playing with a full deck.

Wrong! An entire race was not blamed for that incident. It was suspected that an illegal alien did it. Only the illegal alien himself would have been blamed if found and brought to trial and convicted. Put the race card back in your pocket.

Perhaps if Potok and Straus spent a bit more time looking for real threats other than just Naz!s, we could all take them as a more legitimate source of intelligence. But when the AZ ADL cozies up to the biggest Naz! in Sandland, Russell Pearce, it is hard to take them as anything but a joke.
