John McCain vs. DREAM Act, Pt.2: Passes House, Senate Vote Today (w/Update)

Dream a little DREAM with me...

See an update on the status of the DREAM below.

The haters were defeated in the U.S. House yesterday, and the DREAM Act passed 216-198.

Today, the fight goes to the U.S. Senate, where the Republicans threaten a filibuster, and the Dems lack the 60 votes to invoke cloture.

I say, let them filibuster. Call their bluff. Let the GOP show its true colors, colors that sadly do not include "brown."

DREAMers need to sock it to the Senate phone lines. The Arizona Dream Act Coalition has all the phone numbers necessary, here. Let U.S. Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl feel the heat.

To watch Dennis Gilman's latest pro-DREAM video, check out yesterday's blog post.

UPDATE: As "guest" notes below, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took a strategic step back today, and held off on starting the debate on the DREAM Act, as had been scheduled.

Even more reason to pound Kyl and McCain with phone calls, faxes, e-mails and letters. Don't let up. A spokesman for Reid told Fox News that the Dems want to bring it back up for a vote before the lame duck session is over. They better. To do otherwise would truly be lame.

I am just so mad right now...........I feel like saying this: I hope every single nativist in this country is tried, and, if convicted, SHOT, for HIGH treason once we take this country back from the fascist hordes. As a proud 10th generation{at least!} American, I am SICK and TIRED of this country being hijacked by totalitarian fools and their masters..............SICK OF IT! And I'm not taking it ANYMORE. PERIOD!

For those of you more reasonable and non-hateful conservatives out there...........please, wake up. These people have nothing but only their own interests in mind. Everybody else will get screwed royally, including you guys.

Here, folks, I have a couple of URLs to show you that may help you learn something about how things really operate in our world:

The 2.4 million American war-time veterans at the American Legion (including yours truly) strongly urge the Senate to defeat the mass amnesty bill in the Senate next week. The Dream Act would legalize millions of illegal aliens and their family members. This should put the death nail into Mexico's "dream" of open borders and immigration anarchy in America for now and the foreseeable future. When you call your Senators next week, be sure to mention that America's war veterans at the American Legion oppose the 'Dream' Amnesty bill.

Turn off Fox. For God's sake, don't comment if you have no earthy clue about the topic. The Dream Act places demands on those undoc. immigrants who came here illegally with their parents, through no fault of their own. This would extend CONDITIONAL legal status for 5 years to undoc.immigrants who: were younger than 16 when they entered US, lived in US for at least 5 years, have a diploma from US high school. They can APPLY for an additional 5 yrs of CONDITIONAL nonimmigrant status if they've completed 2 years of college or military service. After that, they can APPLY for permanent legal status. I think that these kids are EXACTLY the kinds of people that we want coming to the United States. Actually, I'd like to swap some of them, for some of you. Deal? Your amount of misinformation is stunning. Where DO you get your news? Never mind.I'm guessing I already know. One more thing...are you SURE that you speak for 2.4 million people with that statement you made? I bet you don't......kind of full of yourself, I'd say. If you did serve this country, then you should really have more respect for those that would also serve this country even while they are in legal immigration limbo, they did it because they wanted to give back to a country they grew up in and came to love as their own...not because they got drafted. Is their service to this country any less admirable than yours? Sorry, but the fear and ignorant rantings like yours have got to be stopped.

Wow, Sainteve. You do not make logical sense. Do not write if you are just going to write radical "Rush Limbaugh" stuff. We do not want to hear it.'If you have an argument, make it logical. And do not bash Desert Flower's response. And maybe you need to watch your words, Sainteve

Answering my own question. I just called Flake's office in D.C. (thanks for the phone numbers on the previous article) and learned that Flake voted AGAINST the Dream Act.I asked his aide if ALL House Republicans voted against it, and she said she didn't know. Flake (my congressman) doesn't always run with the pack and I'd written him a couple weeks ago giving my reasons to urge his support of the Dream Act. Am most disappointed. It will be interesting to see how he tries to justify his "no" vote.

One doesn't have to be 'brave", one just has to be smart and practical on this issue. They were smart and practical. That is all.The rest of the time they're busy trying to screw everyone that doesn't hold their vision of Amerikkka.Don't misunderstand. Glad they voted for this, but it surely won't hold true for other important legislation. Mark my words.

he'll probably trot out the tired old excuse about them being illegal aliens and how it's not right to reward illegal behavior. *yawn* like we haven't been served that red herring a million times already, right? I think that one look at his photo should tell any thinking democrat all they need to know about his no vote. he looks so familiar, was he an extra in American History X?

Does anybody know how Jeff Flake voted on the Dream Act? Did EVERY House Republican vote against it?

DREAM ACT WILL PASSHarry Read and Nancy Pelosi are very smart and know how to get things done. Harry Reid called a vote at the last minute to “table” or kill the Senate version of the Dream Act vote Thursday, with the intention of taking up the House version of similar legislation later this month. In exchange for tax cuts for rich Republicans will give four or five votes for Dream act. Speaker Palosi will not bring Tax cuts for rich up for debate until she gets what she wants. Which are votes in the Senate to pass Dream Act, don't ask don't tell, et al.

quote: Senate GOP leadership unveiled their letter -- signed by literally all 42 members of the Republican caucus -- declaring their intention to hold the chamber hostage until the tax policy debate is resolved.

"[W]e write to inform you that we will not agree to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to any legislative item until the Senate has acted to fund the government and we have prevented the tax increase that is currently awaiting all American taxpayers. With little time left in this Congressional session, legislative scheduling should be focused on these critical priorities. While there are other items that might ultimately be worthy of the Senate's attention, we cannot agree to prioritize any matters above the critical issues of funding the government and preventing a job-killing tax hike."

In practical terms, this means that the Senate Republican caucus will join arms and kill literally every piece of legislation in the lame-duck session -- New START, funding U.S. troops, the DREAM Act, etc. -- until the government is fully funded and they're satisfied with the outcome of the debate on tax policy.

I don't know if the dream act is going to pass or not based on windtalker's posting, but he has a proud native american user name so I agree with whatever he's saying. My friends and I have had many a late night discussion about how we all find ourselves nodding our heads in agreement so much of the time. We thought that it was really weird at first, but then, all of a sudden it dawned on us, it's because we're not republican haters! We surround ourselves with liberal democrats and when you do that, you only hear great ideas, so how can you help but nod in agreement all of the time?

If I remember correctly, and I have a pretty good memory despite my history of medical marijuana usage, after our most recent discussion on the subject, my friends and I watched that horror movie called "a day without a mexican," and recoiled in terror at the various nightmare scenarios presented by the gifted director. The next day, I doubled my housekeeper's salary and begged her never to leave me.

I saw that movie. It's scary, but it's one of those movies that really makes you think. It's sort of like that Happy Days episode where they introduced "sticks downey," the black drummer and the rest of the gang wouldn't go play at a party because sticks wasn't going to be allowed to play with them, you know, because he was black. That episode was super profound in this young liberal democrat's life.

fun fact: sticks downey was played by the great liberal democrat actor Jack Baker who went on to star in 140+ X-rated movies including one with an under-aged tracy lords, and who ultimately died from HIV related illness. As we all know, the x-rated film industry is veritable honeypot of liberal people and ideas so I support them completely and am so glad that one of my early liberal lessons was taught to me by a guy packing at least 10 inches.

Let's ask Mexico if they'd like to join the United States as our 52nd State! They'd retain their independence through the statehood declaration and their new constitution and gain the protection of the Federal Government.

I would LOVE to have this addition to our country and it would immediately bring an end to all this bigotry bullcrap that's threatening our

If the hispanic community follows through with their threats of protests and maybe even violence if they don't get the citizenship that they rightfully deserve, how will they be able to tell that I'm a democrat and therefore should be spared their wrath? Are we democrats all going to wear t-shirts of a certain color or with an identifying logo on them, so that our friends from south of the border will be able to recognize us and let us pass without incident?

I'm sorry if this was already covered in the newsletter, I've been out of town for a couple of weeks caring for Haitian orphans.

How do they rightfully "deserve" anything? When they stand up in downtown Phx waving THEIR flag on US soil and desecrate the US flag they deserve NOTHING from this country. Absolutely nothing!

you know what? it takes more effort to frown than it does to smile. open your heart this holiday season. the invisible wizard in the sky wants you to love thy neighbors and give of yourself. come on over to the sunny side of the street with us lovers and away from those haters on the dark side. are you really worried about having to subsidize these dreamers? it's not going to happen, because we can just make more money at any time, the dreamers don't need your money. maybe you just need a hug, lady rider.

darn, they tabled the vote in the senate. It's not because Harry Reid is a wussy or anything, it's just because he's so smart and knows that he doesn't have the votes. I wish that we could just get rid of these white republican haters. It would be a lot easier to transform this country into the utopia that only we democrats can create, if we didn't have white people blocking us at every step. Thankfully, they are not reproducing at replacement level, so we should be rid of them altogether at some point. I just hope I'm still alive to watch the last one fade away.

please call and beg your senators everybody! john mccain knows that the political winds are against what the haters call amnesty, so he needs to be swayed. We need to convince him that losing his cushy job will be worth it when he gets to watch these wonderful kids living out their dreams during his golden years. hope and change, you guys. we can do it!
