Russell Pearce's Young Nemesis Andrew Sherwood: The Dark Horse I Like

Sherwood gets the Dennis Gilman treatment in this YouTube video

Andrew Sherwood may not slay the anti-immigrant goliath, neo-Nazi-huggin' state Senator Russell Pearce, but he's got the right idea on how to take on the beast. And that is, talk about everything Pearce's not doing, and all the stuff he's doing wrong.

You have to admire Sherwood's gumption at taking a shot at Pearce. As I mentioned in my Bird column this week, Sherwood's not afraid of the subject of immigration, or of calling Pearce out on SB 1070 in Pearce's own back yard -- LD18.

Largely, Dems statewide have been petrified of attacking 1070, just as they were afraid of pulling out all the stops against it in the state legislature before it passed. Their pusillanimity will be rewarded with four more years of Republican rule.

The path to power is twofold: Hack away at your enemies like you're Jeffrey Dahmer during a feeding frenzy; and offer the voters an alternative. Give your base a reason to go to the polls. Don't just mimic the stale, hate-filled positions of your opponents. You know, like Jon Hulburd's been doing.

I fear a Hulburd win in CD3 will send the wrong message to the Dems. That is, to beat a Republican, you have to become a Republican in disguise and abandon Democratic principles.

I'm all for borrowing the GOPs slash and burn tactics. But the ends justify the means only if you get the ends you want. Otherwise, you might as well hand the tuskers the keys to the kingdom and start selling Amway. Or SC Johnson products. Take your pick.

Libertarian Andrea Garcia broke 9% which is a record for a Libertarian in a 3 way race. Even without the support of a 2 party system. That takes Gumption as well.

P.S. I just took a look at Sherwood's campaign website: if his homepage is any indication, it looks like his strategy was largely consistent with what I had just suggested; so really, my commentary above must be construed as applying to his approach as framed by the video and the blog item itself.

I guess there's just so much that a boy-faced man with a bad haircut can accomplish without the financial support of his party in opposing a powerful incumbent who enjoys considerable popularity in his district.

Well, I don't think that the little girls (babies having babies?) were the best spokespersons for the average viewer/voter to identify with; same for slightly confused old woman who thought that SB 1070 had been written (back) "east". I wish the video had concentrated more on some of the news-article issues that were briefly shown about 1:55 in: that Pearce voted for a bill that raised property taxes; that his funding cuts have directly contributed to a 34 percent increase in in-state tuition; that East Valley Chambers of Commerce rated Pearce next-to-last in business friendly attitude; and that Pearce opposes state legislation encouraging solar-energy development as "socialism".

If Sherwood had concentrated primarily on winning over the business groups (I liked what he said about the importance of small business) and on his backwards approach to drawing out of state investment and revitalizing the economy with good paying jobs in green energy industries (now that the housing sector, Arizona's traditional economic engine, has gone kaput, and will stay that way for years to come) -- then there would have been a lot less hostility to his take on SB 1070, which, after all, not all businesses support.

Sherwood's opposition to SB 1070 is ideologically sound, but that's only useful IN AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN if it draws voters: and the issue is a polarizing one, so that picking up Hispanic voters on that basis may come at the expense of losing others. Concretely, the question is how this plays out in the district in which he's running: a highly conservative Republican district.

So, he needed to make business and economic growth (and JOBS) the primary point of his candidacy, showing why Russell Pearce's troglodytic paleo-conservatism has done, and will do, nothing to improve that; and by the way, his anti-immigrant hostility has cost us economically, in a state dependent on tourism and on out of state investment. Once he got into office he would be free to take a bullwhip to SB 1070 if he wanted to.

A sicko Tempe Associate loved that reference to Dahmer,

".....that was great, the part about hackin "away at your enemies like you're Jeffrey Dahmer during a feeding frenzy..." Can I have a side of spleen with my liver and tonsils? Creamed eyeballs would be great too. My mouth is watering already and I'm firing up the grill..."

This guy had no political statement to make and no opinion on this article. He also sounded young on the voice mail, followed by his text message above. We all better hope he was just kidding around because he's a neighbor in Tempe, with plenty of fresh young meat at ASU.

Are you referring to the wifebeater who got fired from his job at MVD? THAT Russell Pearce? It's time we start going after his legislative record - his two signature accomplishments are (1) the Employer Sanctions law; and (2) SB 1070. The former has been completely ineffective and cost tens of millions of dollars to implement, and the latter, drafted by an out of state hate group with input from the private prison industry, has been declared unconstitutional by an independent panel of law professors (and to an extent a Federal judge). Nice record Russell.

USADefecter has Stockholm syndrome. His wife was denyed amnesty. He never got over it and now licks the asshair of the ones that denyed it to her. She represented what over 42% of the undocumented population go through. Like the typical brainwashed teabagger he votes against his own interest and speaks out of his ass.

Pearce was planning on debating Sherwood but couldn't find the mouth marbles to do it.

Pearce promised and is on record as saying so, that he would debate libertarian Andrea Garcia line for line on 1070. Garcias group Freedoms Phoenix was the only group to stop 1070 when it was in the 3rd read by focusing on a portion the Conservative crowd got blindsided with which is National ID.

USADefendant - If brains were gunpowder, you couldn't blow your nose.

I triple-dog dare you to find anything, anywhere Sherwood has written or said that says he's for "open borders"or "amnesty." It simply doesn't exist because he doesn't believe in it. But go ahead and look and come back when you're done. When you return with your tail between your legs, it will just be further proof that you have no facts, just words that ring false and hollow.

In the meantime, Lemons is correct. Sherwood has the moxie to stand up to Pearce and apparently Pearce was too much of a woosie to debate. But I guess when you're up against a superior intellect, it's better to run and hide.

BTW, there are a lot of voters in this state who live in trailers, so I'd be careful at whom you cast the first stone.

Stick to the trailer parks in search of votes Andrew!!!

Uncontrolled open borders should make Arizona a more favorable place to live and bring our education level to that of Mexico's. Genius!!!

It appears Sherwood simply is outsmarting pearce. Not a challenge, I grant you, but well done anyway.

The difference between pearce and a really mean rattle snake: You could get to like the snake over time.
