Randy Pullen Out as Arizona GOP Chair

Glory days: Pullen being sworn in as chairman in 2009, after defeating Lisa Allen

Randy Pullen, chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, has announced via Twitter that he will not seek reelection at the next state party meeting on January 22.

This follows the news that Pullen had not been elected a state committeeman from Legislative District 11. Normally, someone would have to be a state committeeman to run for chair of the party.

Republican insiders tell me that Pullen was considering some sort of contingency plan, but ultimately decided to throw in the towel in a fit of disgust, as the state GOP dominated the recent elections, and he feels there's no gratitude for his efforts.

Could this signal an attempt by moderate Republicans to swing the party away from the insane, Mexican-bashing nativism that has thoroughly infected it over the past several years? Pullen was always a hard-right ideologue, committed to the concept of "attrition through enforcement," the nativist buzzphrase for a not-so-subtle version of ethnic cleansing.

Last year, Pullen beat out GOP moderate Lisa James for the party chairmanship. James was backed by almost all of the top elected party leadership. But the base of the Republican Party is mostly white and, sadly, rabidly anti-immigrant. Pullen smeared James as being "pro-amnesty," and with that smear, effectively secured his ultimate win.

I think it's interesting that Pullen threw in the towel so quickly, though maybe he had no alternative under the rules. Could it be that he got a talking to from party bigwigs?

So, the tuskers secure a supermajority, elect the biggest bigot in the state, Russell Pearce, to be state Senate President, and yet die-hard nativist Pullen gets handed his walking papers. Wacky.

There is one wild card worth considering. Pullen was knee-deep in the 2008 Sheriff's Command Association scandal, the one that slimed Sheriff Joe Arpaio's nemesis Dan Saban with a dirty campaign ad funded by some millionaire Joe-backers, and MCSO command staff, such as Chief Deputy David Hendershott and Captain Joel Fox.

The scuttlebutt out there is that indictments of some of the players in that scandal will be coming soon from the state Attorney General's office. With the SCA scandal's details to be revived in the near future, it's better for the GOP if Pullen is on his way out. Particularly when indictments are imminent.

I should point out that Pullen has asserted he acted appropriately. Still, his association with that campaign ad continues to taint him, and the Arizona Republican Party in general.

After reading the caption on the picture of Randy Pullen, I wondered if this was about the state GOP or a state poodle grooming competition. I think the caption should say Lisa James instead of Lisa Allen.

Gerry, upon seeing the article photo it made me think that the following might have happened during the photo shoot:

"Would all of the bitter, racist, old, white men please raise their right hand so the can be recognized as heroes of the Arizona Republican Party?".

The other two right hands seen ostensibly belong to a local county sheriff and a state representative. ALL of the other right hands, apparently hundreds, were cropped out of the photo.

Chad, I didn't see your right hand in there...

WhoKnows:Candy Ass Thomas has set up his own law firm. Visit andrewthomaslaw.com and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Speaking of Candy Ass Thomas, let's review all those cases he and the MCSO shurf filed:

Yavapai CA Sheila Polk rejected them, AZ US Attorney Dennis Burke rejected them, Navajo CA Brad Carlyon rejected them, and a Maricopa County GJ rejected them.

What are the odds that Gila CA Daisy Flores will reject them, too?

Let's hope the federal GJ will hand up those indictments and soon.

It will be good riddance when the Flaccid Fool and his greasy, slimy minions, Candy Ass Thomas and his greasy, slimy minions and SP Pearce are all indicted and perp-walked!

I will assume that Daisy, being the good Republican, has waited until after the election to return the files to Maricopa County. This timing would minimize loss of votes for MC Republicans or state Repubs. She will likely return the files to Monty when he takes office. In that case, no harm, no foul. It looks like she reviewed them without any influence from Mr. Romley, and before Monty could influence her decision, as well. MCSO and the former county attorney lose-of course, but that's to be expected.

One bitter racist old white man down, 3 to go. That would be Pearce, Brewer, and Arpaio, who are, unfortunately, the faces of our state to the rest of the nation.

How right you are, Chad. Their actions and inactions are bad enough for us living here, but being "the faces of our state to the rest of the nation" is downright humiliating.

Arizona will continue to sink into a deeper black hole until those who spew hatred and bigotry are removed. Pullen and his enablers all need to step aside and let a more rational, younger generation take their turn. Arizona needs to be brought into the 21st Century and out of '30's.

I tend to think if you were an Arizonan during the Burton Barr years - when politics was politics for the good of the State and differences were able to be overcome without race baiting and corruption - all the more reason to be involved. Provided you still maintain those values....which few AZ Republicans seem to have done.

CC, I don't think age is part of the problem. Many of us over fifty still have the ability to think outside the Republican box. I will agree that there might be more rational Republicans out there, however. I can only hope. Right now let's just celebrate Mr. Pullen's departure. It can only be a good sign.

Knowing the GOP in this state, they'll find someone even more corrupt and unqualified to take over. Thomas IS looking for a job.

Hey Randy, what was your take home pay from the SCA "incident"?

Finally. Mr. Pullen has long over-lived his welcome and it's well past time for his departure to the unmown, untended pasture in the sky. None of them damn illegals around to take care of that pasture, you see.

Good riddance, Mr. Pullen. Now, take the fat asses shurf and the senator with you.

Tommy, You took the words right out of my mouth! Well said.

How well I remember that secretive SCA Arpaio Campaign Fund scandal. And there was the head of the Republican party with the fast acting washing machine to speedily launder the money for those slime TV ads.

"Could this signal an attempt by moderate Republicans to swing the party away from the insane, Mexican-bashing nativism..." in an ideal world, one might hope for such a thing. However, with what we're going to get with the upcoming legislature, I doubt it will matter either way.

Like Bob Robb said in his column last weekend, Democrats have one major reason to be optimistic for 2012. That's this year's Republicans.

If anyone thinks it's going to get any better for people than this week's big story about the guy getting sent home without his liver transplant, they are tragically mistaken. What can anyone foresee other than such tragedy when you have arch-conservatives spouting their anti-egalitarian nonsense?

This is freedom?

That IS King Russell's legacy and it can only get worse.

And the tourism bureau doesn't want to acknowledge who has destroyed their business. Arizona is becoming ground zero as the mass incarceration capitol of the nation. Who wants to be driving or traveling to this state with all the hatred spewing out of the mouths of elected tyrants?

Interesting point. I recently had a black truck driver refuse to come to Phoenix for a job because he was afraid of the bias spewed by Mrs. Brewer. A black truck driver. If this guy turns down work, what's it saying about those who might otherwise actually pay to visit Phoenix? Look at golf courses around the valley and ask them what their numbers are like. The media event by Mrs. Brewer and her 'hate Arizona' campaign seems to have substantially damaged the state she is supposed to govern. Now she has to figure out how to actually balance the budget she said she had already balanced. Soon some of the voters who voted for her along party line will realize what they've done. Sad stuff. All to get herself elected so she can one day brag about what she "has done did one day as govnur".
