Tom Horne Ahead of Andrew Thomas (Now by 636 -- Updated 8/28)

Thomas' corpse is still twitching, alas...

(Alert: Please see 8/28 update below.)As of 6:36 p.m. today, the Arizona Secretary of State's office was reporting that state Schools Superintendent Tom Horne leads his rival, former County Attorney Andrew Thomas, by 485 votes in the GOP primary for state Attorney General.

SOS spokesman Matthew Benson told me that there are more than 21,000 ballots remaining to count in the state. The majority of those are provisional ballots, and most are in Maricopa County.

County elections issued a press release this afternoon stating that they counted 27,192 ballots today, and have 12,000 left to go. They've finished counting for Friday and will resume again tomorrow morning.

The count in the AG's race is turning into a roller-coaster ride. Thomas was up early Tuesday evening, but his lead flipped, leaving Thomas hundreds of votes behind by early Wednesday morning.

By the end of the day Thursday, Horne's lead had expanded to 1,073 votes. This morning, the scuttlebutt was that Thomas would be taking a powder by day's end. Indeed, his slithery PR flack Jason Rose Tweeted that Thomas would have a "statement" out in the afternoon.

Thomas has just admitted to KTAR that he was prepared to concede earlier in the day, but he changed his mind once Horne's 1,073 vote lead began to slide.

So, Thomas is alive and twitching as of the moment. This guy's harder to be rid of than Robert DeNiro's character in Cape Fear.

Update 8/28/10: As of 4:52 p.m. Saturday, the Arizona Secretary of State's Web site has Horne up by 636 over Thomas. Maricopa County is still counting its remaining ballots, and will be doing so into the night, according to spokeswoman Yvonne Reed.

It appears that Thomas is beaten. What disgusts me almost as much as Thomas' lack of integrity is that over a quarter million people voted for this dangerous clown.

With this tight a race, it shows there are very serious problems in the justice system and the Maricopa County Attorney's office and their relationship with the long, standing Sheriff - 17 years is too long to be in any office -- people need to take action NOW and work 24/7 to change this "culture of cruelty" by elected officials and their co-horts.

Thomas said he would support the winner which will be Tom Horne, so what's with the speeding ticket / police report comment in the blog? Want Rotellini to win?

Figures, Andy Thomas just can't walk out the door without spending tax-payers money can he? What's next, a recount? Lawsuits for all those who are out to get him AND didn't vote for him? Will the porn-stache PLEASE just go away?

This is a good line, "So, Thomas is alive and twitching as of the moment. This guy's harder to be rid of than Robert DeNiro's character in Cape Fear." but I also like Paul Rubin's line about being harder to get rid of then cockroaches and styrofoam cups! You reporters have done an outstanding job. It's been a long road since the owners of the Phoenix New Times were arrested in Oct. 2007. We've all worked hard to make SURE Thomas would not get elected. What goes around comes around. When you put a stick into a hornet's nest, what does one expect?

Aren't dueling shotguns at 3 yards the traditional way to break a tie in AZ elections?

Thomas stated if he loses he will focus on defending people of faith.

Gerry_C, We agree. That's why Arizona has been sinking into the ever deepening abyss.

ps - we certainly don't need Andrew Thomas, former county attorney to be state Attorney General. Despite arpaio's "big" money, Thomas malicious prosecutions and total disregard for people's right is catching up with him. Time to be done with Andrew Thomas regardless of the slim-margin outcome!!

That works for me, Dennis. I have faith that thomas is going to lose. And I will assume at some point MCSO will catch up with me and I will need a very good liar to represent me. But, of course, I'm not brown....
