John McCain's Wife's Budweiser Distributorship Boycotted by Latino Group Over SB 1070

First baseball, now beer's boycotted? What's next, lapdances?

Budweiser, which in 2008 was bought out by a Belgian beer giant to form Anheuser-Busch InBev, has spent millions on advertising to the Latino market. According to a 2009 article in Hispanic Market Weekly, the company spent more than $21 million in the first half of 2008 alone on Spanish language media.

All that advertising has clearly paid off. Just check the advertisements on the wall the next time you go to a Mexican seafood place. If I had a dime for every Bud or Bud Light poster I've seen in some mariscos joint in town, I wouldn't have to write for a living.

So the announcement of a press conference this Monday morning by Somos America, a coalition of pro-immigrant advocacy groups in Arizona, is intriguing to say the least. At the Monday presser, Somos plans to call on all Latinos in the state to boycott Sand Land Anheuser-Busch distributor Hensley & Co.

That's Hensley & Co. as in owned by Cindy Hensley McCain, wife of U.S. Senator John McCain.

Somos' beef with Hensley & Co.? According to the press release, it's the company's "financial contributions to political supporters of the anti-migrant law SB 1070 who continue promoting a climate of fear, hate and criminalization towards the Latino and immigrant community."

Of course, the main candidate Hensley & Co. has supported over the years is John McCain, who flip-flopped during this election cycle from a supporter of comprehensive immigration reform to a no-amnesty border hawk.

Thing is, Somos announced this boycott of Hensley & Co. not long after SB 1070 was signed into law by Governor Jan Bewer, though it's gotten very little play in the media so far.

Can brand loyalty be defeated by such a boycott? The cynical part of my brain thinks probably not. For instance, George Lopez hawking Bud Light on his show (which he has done) has helluva lot of weight. Unless Somos can get Lopez on board.

That said, big corporations don't like any bad publicity or even the slightest cut into their profits. If Budweiser begins to get a bad rep for its ties to McCain, who knows, maybe it'd put pressure on Hensley & Co. to avoid further contributions to Mr. Dang Fence?

Or the company could get Cindy Hensley to divorce our decrepit senior Senator. After all, considering her moolah, she could do a lot better.

The full text of Somos' press release is below:

Somos América Launches Boycott Against Budweiser

Coalition Pledges to Boycott Budweiser Distributor Hensley Co. for Funding Anti-Immigrant Political Figures Who Support SB 1070

The Economic Sanctions Committee of Somos América is asking every Latino in Arizona to boycott Budweiser. Their support of the boycott is a response to Hensley & Co.'s, Budweiser's distributor, financial contributions to political supporters of the anti-migrant law SB 1070 who continue promoting a climate of fear, hate and criminalization towards the Latino and immigrant community.

"I call on all Latinos to stop buying Budweiser until Hensley publicly denounces 1070 and pledges to not support candidates that support the law." Jairo Tellez, owner of local restaurant Vuelve a la Vida

What: Press Conference to announce Somos América's support for boycott against Budweiser Distributor Hensley & Company

Who: Somos America Coalition and community members

When: Monday August 23, 2010 at 10:00 am

Where: J.V.M Seafoods - 35th Avenue and Indian School

Website: www.boycottarizona1070.com

Background: The boycott of Hensley was launched by Somos America, a coalition of over 40 Arizona-based organizations, soon after Senate Bill 1070 was signed into law by Arizona Governor Janet Brewer. The boycott committee has identified companies who do business in Arizona that have particularly egregious records of contributing to the climate of fear and hate in Arizona. They have done so primarily by their financial contributions to candidates and organizations that are implementing SB 1070, 287(g), and Secure Communities.

"The intent of the business boycott is notto punish companies by asking our supporters to not purchase their products. It is to get Arizona business to realize that their support of these individuals for even 'strictly business' purposes is creating conditions of hate, fear, and violence against Latinos and immigrants in Arizona", said former Arizona Senator Alfredo Gutierrez.

All that Aztecs did was terrorize surrounding peacefull Indians and sacrifice them, but built nothing in the U.S. They had nothing to do with the U.S. ,in fact, which I repeat, EVERYONE IN THE WORLD KNOWS WAS BUILT BY EUROPEANS HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. ONLY IGNORANTS DON'T KNOW OR DON'T WANT TO KNOW THIS.

Are you too stupid to know the difference between an editorial and an article?

Apparently so.

Proud Mexica, Mexicans built NOTHING, in the U.S. All of it was built when the vast majority of them came here. Question: Do you see any Skyscrapers in the U.S.. built from Adobe? How about Bridges, Tunnels, Airports, sewage systems, roads, ........tHE MORE YOU MAINTAIN SUCH ABSURDITIES THE STUPIDER YOU LOOK TO EDUCATED PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. Now you will find old structures in the U.S. that look exactly like the ones in--GUESS WHERE!? TRY EUROPE. DUHHHHHHH,.....

ProudMexica

If stupid people, stupider and duhhh are part of your extensive vocabulary, it is obvious that not only are you an individual with a poor IQ you are also ignorant of it. I doubt you could be proud of it. I have a few minutes to spare so here I go. Did you notice you were the only one to respond to me? Others know I speak the truth. Tell me what is ABSURD about history? Did you know WE developed irrigation, aqueducts, canals and bridges? That is true. We built three cities larger than any in Europe of 1492. Did you see that, 1492! We did not "came here" we were here. Europeans destructed our cities, burned our libraries and committed endless acts of ethnocide that I'm certain you are unaware about. Now where do you stand with your "MODERN U.S. IS A EUROPEAN -AMERICAN CREATION. EVERYONE IN THE WORLD KNOWS THIS" argument? As far as the 1 person likes your link, sorry to burst your false bubble of enpowerment. I clicked on the wrong icon when replying to you.

"is land belongs to the indigenous who built and maintained it.................."

The "indigenous built and maintained NOTHING. Instead they moved around and killed buffalo, yes, but built NOTHING AND MAINTAINED EVEN LESS. THE MODERN U.S. IS A EUROPEAN -AMERICAN CREATION. EVERYONE IN THE WORLD KNOWS THIS, EXCEPT SOME STUPID PEOPLE.

To chicagonut, you really are a nut. This land belongs to the indigenous people who BUILT and MAINTAINED this land until it was stolen from us. You are right on one thing though, LATINOS did not do this. MEXICANS did. You are the one speaking nonsense. This is racism, because this here is MY land, even though it is being OCCUPIED by european settlers. What right do YOU have to call people illegal aliens. Where are you from, where are your ancestors from? You tell me to go back to my land, I am home already. Where is your land? Europeans killed 95% of our population using smallpox, they raped and extorted us. Genocide, terrorism, enslavement and theft of our land is not racist to you? See your LAWS don't seem to convince me.

ProudMexica - first study history, you are not a native, you are also a mix of European and 20 others cultures.Sorry, but that's how it is. You don't own the US, period. Your comment a reverse discrimination against American people. Fix your country first, than the US -> because your claim being an Mexican, not an US Citizen, right? Illegal crossing a border is a crime, everywhere in the world include Mexico.Look at the history and map it will help you: http://www.mexconnect.com/arti... Maybe disappointing to you, because I'm not a US Citizen or from Mexico. I'm just a simple European, hmmm should I claim owing the US?

Ignorant, beer is not American, the company that produces is not American (its Belgium) and they are not boycotting AB's product because they are "American" as you say. They are boycotting Budweiser/Bud Light as the Phoenix AB distributor is owned by John McCain's wife and they support as well as John McCain laws like SB1070. Get you facts correct before you make ignorant comments.

Hey Lydia Guzman, looking forward to the Federal indictments in December ? Tax evasion, wire fraud, just to name a few. The mountain of evidence against you is very damning. Neither you or your attorney were very diligent. You both actually made the investigation quite simple.

"Of course, the main candidate Hensley & Co. has supported over the years is John McCain, who flip-flopped during this election cycle from a supporter of comprehensive immigration reform to a no-amnesty border hawk."

McCain has NEVER denounced amnesty, only denied his bend-over 2006 legalization marathon was NOT amnesty because it contained "fines". The thick-skulled voters of Arizona have never made the connection that McCain pushed "comprehensive immigration reform" BECAUSE he wanted to sell several million new-ordained residents Bud Light until he or they puked. The irony here is that Arizona ignorami should have recalled or voted out McCain for his sell out of Arizona for profit, but now the Hispanics are taking action for the same reason and the same financial whirly-turly. This demonstrates the pro-illegal crowd's resolve against the typical Arizona voter who is ignorant of the facts and/or ignores them for interest in primetime TV. Incredibly, morons with bolo ties will repeat past stupidity and run to the polls tomorrow to send this S.O.B. back to Washington, where he will switch BACK again. Before the voting machines cool off, McCain will engage in a three-way with Obama and Napolitano which will climax into AMNESTY.

The last time Budweiser was boycotted was on Nov 7, 1997. (Headlines of the LA Times)

Budweiser refused to hire African American truck drivers, plant workers and office staff.

So, Budweiser has a history with minorities. A negative history. Here's the link:http://latimesblogs.latimes.co...

SCGrad

Lydia, although your facts are correct regarding African Americans , you are not correct when you state Anheuser-Busch has a negative history with minorities. As a retired Quality Assurance Manager with A-B, I was given hundreds of opportunities to attend company paid training to place me in a position to excel not only within the company, but outside as well. Some will say this was only afforded to "white collar" employee's, that is also a false statement, many of my friends that run the fillers, packers, and forklifts all are given opportunities to inprove themselves on an annual basis. This issue here is not with Anheuser-Busch, but with your local distributor which are two seperate companys. As a proud Chicano from Cali, I can honestly say I have never encountered bigotry, or racism, but I do not condone these acts on helpless Hispanics in Arizona......

Quote Truth (and I had to bite my tongue on that one):

"Well...., lets just say, you should of educated the MCSO, and DPS, and the "Crusty 'ol Leather Mitt" for that matter..., BEFORE the Gov., attempted to "legalize" this bigoted legislation"!

SB1070 has nothing to do with Arpaio. He was doing what he was doing way before this law was implemented. It has never been proven that he racially profiles anyone. That is just hyperbole by the ethnocentrics to suit their agenda.

There is nothing bigoted in the law itself. If so, please point out the wording that substantiates your claims.

Truth08
Truth08

The malfeasance's have called me out?

Oh jeez???

Let me see?

>>>Why does the law "indemnify" cops?

I'll tell you why..... Its because they will and based on your own criteria (Arpaio ref), already "have" violated US Citizens of Hispanic descents civil rights! I'm sure you didn't take the time to read the links? You must really be from Milwaukee.... No? You a really a Packer a heart? Oh.., lastly thanks for making my point on that one!

>>>Why does it specify...., "day laborers"?

Probably because, most of those looking for work that day..., are once again... Hispanic!! You get to by-pass Park-Place and go straight to Community Chest... Mrs Badger at heart! "Don't ya know?" Yep, you guessed it correct again! No need for thanks there, Mrs., Green Bay, its on the house!

I can continue if you wish, though...., if you don't read the links, I'm just wasting my time. You "silly widdle wabbit"!!

So continue to be in denial all you want, (I would be willing to bet if you saw it happen underneath your nose you would still deny, it) you still proved your OWN point not to mention mine!

Ha!
