Linda Ronstadt, Zack de la Rocha, and Little Joe Blast Joe Arpaio, Raise Dolo for Macehualli/Tonatierra

I'm on my way down to Phoenix's Falcon Park, where one of the largest anti-Arpaio marches in history is now gathering, but I would be remiss if I didn't post a short note about the fundraiser at Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox's El Portal restaurant last night, where around $8,000 was raised for Sal Reza's financially-imperiled Macehualli Day Labor Center.

The event's honored guests will be leading the march today: Linda Ronstadt, Little Joe of Little Joe y La Familia, and Zack de la Rocha of One Day as a Lion. They gave a little press conference before going into Wilcox's restaurant for a $100 a head dinner there. You can see them yourselves for free by getting yourself down to 3420 West Roosevelt Street, next to Carl Hayden High School. The march should begin around 10 a.m. and will proceed to Joe's gulag center down at 35th Avenue and Durango. You can catch all the pertinent details, here.

The plan is to encircle the jails, then end with a concert by Little Joe. Folks are hoping Ronstadt and Zack may join in.

As for the presser last night, Little Joe had the sound bite du jour:

"I know [Arpaio] claims he's the toughest sheriff in the United States. Well, Mr. Tough Sheriff, I'd like to see you come to Laredo or Juarez and see how tough you can be there...They'd take care of you quite quick there."

Ronstadt spoke as a native daughter of Arizona:

"I'm here because I'm an Arizonan. I was born in Arizona. My father was born in Arizona. My grandmother was born in Arizona. I love Arizona, and Sheriff Arpaio is bad for Arizona. He's making Arizona look bad because he's profiling and he's applying the law in an uneven and unjust way, and that weakens the law for all of us."

De la Rocha talked of his support for organizations such as Tonatierra/Macehualli, the human rights group Puente, and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network:

"When you hear about the conditions in the [jails], when you hear about these so called crime sweeps in which the undocumented and documented alike are being pulled over and threatened and intimidated incessantly...I believe that these organizations are becoming the conscience of the country with regard to immigration rights, in regards to workers rights all over the country. That's why I'm here to support them."

Before heading inside, they encouraged everyone to join them today. The march will be a long one, so there's still time to catch it. If you're stuck at home, I'll be submitting a report after it's all over.

Its funny these celebs do not have a clue what they are talking about. Very simple: It is against the law to cross the border and come in this country EVEN if you are a mexican. Easy to learn easy to know....God Bless Arizona and Sheriff Joe. I am thankful for real men that do a real job. I am from Texas and I will stand with and beside Sheriff Joe in Laredo in front of Little Puss joe any day any time, he is harmless and ignorant.....
