Steven Anderson, Leonard Clark's Pastor Protest, and Anderson's Fire Alarm Business Address

It was love vs. hate, round one, down at the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe this morn, as about 125 soldiers of love, led by local progressive activist Leonard Clark, took on the Pastor of Hate, aka, Obama-despiser Steven Anderson, who was preaching to his tiny flock during the storefront church's 10:30 a.m. service.
Organized by Clark through his new Facebook group People Against Clergy Who Preach Hate, which has 1,189 members (and counting), the demonstration was meant as a peaceful push-back to Anderson's August 16 sermon wherein he prayed for President Barack Obama's death. One of those attending the August sermon was none other than Anderson-follower Chris Broughton, who the next day brought a loaded AR-15 to a demo outside the Phoenix Convention Center, where Obama was addressing the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
"[Anderson's] inciting people, whether he admits it or not," said Clark, holding a big "God Is Love," sign. "They asked the man who carried the AR-15 in the church, basically, whether he would be for violence against our president -- our Constitutionally elected president -- and he wouldn't say yes or no, he would just say, `I hope he meets his maker sooner than later.'"
For Clark, the demonstration was a way of showing that not everyone in Arizona is a wacko who wants the president dead. He told me that this was but the first of weekly demonstrations at the church's strip-mall location.
"Look, there might be a miracle," said Clark. "This guy might say, `I'm moving to Siberia, or, guess what, `Forgive me,' and I'll be the first to not criticize him."
For the most part, the demonstration was lively and conflict-free, with motorists honking their support for signs that read, "Love Thy Neighbor," "Who Would Jesus Hate," and "Let the Peace of Christ Rule Your Heart."

One of my faves was a little more cantankerous, though, and borrowed a famous quote from Barry Goldwater concerning Rev. Jerry Falwell, where Goldwater said, "Every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass." But in the sign, the name Falwell was crossed out, and Anderson's was written above it.
It was a diverse crowd, with a smattering of Christian ministers, young girls strumming guitars, a faux monk, and Code Pink's Liz Hourican offering free hugs. She wanted to offer Anderson a hug, but Anderson only briefly stuck his head out the front door of his church, declining to address the flock of press present. He did, however, reaffirm that he hated Obama, and that, "I'm not changing anything that I said."
Later, he exited through the back entrance of his church, which also doubles as the address for Anderson's business, Anderson Fire and Security Incorporated. Check out the instructional videos on his fire alarm YouTube site. Some look like they may have been shot in the church, but I can't absolutely sure of this. (Please see update below.)

Before Anderson played turtle with the press, a couple of congregants walked the media gauntlet, including a big, jovial guy named Herb Rice, who distanced himself from some of the more controversial statements of his pastor. Rice said he didn't hate anybody or want anyone to die, and he hoped that maybe Obama could do that beer-at-the-White House thing with his pastor. You know, kinda like how Obama did with Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and that Cambridge cop.
And here I thought Baptists don't drink. I mean, every Baptist church I've ever been to used grape juice instead of wine for communion. Which, by the way, is one damn fine argument for Catholicism.
Though Anderson's known for his links to gun-nutty libertarians such as militia pimp Ernie Hancock of the Web site Freedom's Phoenix, and Chistopher "AR-15" Broughton, the only gun I saw was on the hip of some guy who said he was acting as security for the property, and who reminded me of Sam Elliott's character in that 1989 Patrick Swayze flick Roadhouse.

Carolyn T. Lowery of the Arizona Black United Fund gave this security fella an earful when she walked toward the church in an attempt to talk with Anderson.
"I've been out here since eight o'clock trying to see the minister," she exclaimed, wagging her finger at him. "And you're denying me to go into the church? What kind of church is that? Sounds like a cult to me. Preaching hatred. That's what you're doing.
"We want to pray with the brother," Lowery told the guard, who said he'd pass the message on. "I don't have no weapons on me but the weapon of love."
As all the TV cameras were glued on this exchange, it'll be interesting to see how they play it.

BTW, I didn't see Broughton while I was there, but I have a feeling that some of the other church-goers may have slipped out the back door as well. You've got to remember, Anderson's congregation is really small. I attended a recent gathering, as I detailed in my column this week, and I counted about 25 persons present for the Sunday evening sermon. During a recent interview with Alan Colmes, Anderson pegged his congregation at about 100 souls.

Nor did I see Anderson's great defenders and boosters from FreedomsPhoenix.com -- owner Ernie Hancock, editor Power Gammill, or RP4409 videographer Jason Shelton. Can't imagine why they'd be ashamed to show their faces round the man they've been lionizing Anderson for his run-ins with the U.S. Border Patrol and Arizona DPS. Can you?
(PS: I found out after making this live that the guard mentioned above is named Tim. He says that he works for the property manager of the strip mall Anderson's church is in. Seems like he's a good guy, and probably got a hard deal today from some of the protesters, who thought he worked for the church.)
***UPDATE 9/9/09: As some commenters have noted, Anderson's Web site and YouTube site for his fire alarm business have gone down since my run-in with Anderson on Sunday evening. What this means would only be speculation on my part. When there's smoke, is there fire?

Unfortunately these protestors are giving the self-absorbed imbocile Anderson exactly what he craves, attention. If ignored by the rest of us he'll have to be satisfied with his dwindling, ignorant "flock".
Well, I guess he does have his brood, you know, the one his constantly barefoot and pregnant sperm-dump wife is gifting the world with.
I envision a Fred Phelps-like future for them, the cowardly "leader" manufacturing enemies which he uses to keep his "flock" in fear and therefor under his control.
Anderson, just mix up the Kool-Aid already and save us the drama.

For one Stephen Lemons, aka The Feathered Douche-nozzle, you were and are cordially invited (but I know you are way too much of a smack-talking candy-ass) to appear on the "Declare Your Independence with Ernest Hancock" radio show with Leonard Clark, Pastor Anderson, and Chris Broughton (all of whom have accepted but you) to work out your differences publicly.
Why? Because you know you have no way of backing up your particularly skeevy brand of yellow journalism. In short, it's because in every column, your mouth writes checks that your ass simply can't cash.
How do I know this? Because I board-op on Ernest's show every day (for free) as my way of fighting for everyone's individual liberties, including people like you and Pastor Anderson, two people who equal-but-different hateful blather.
Secondly, I'm pretty friggin' sure that neither Ernest Hancock nor Powell Gammill are members of Pastor Anderson's so-called "church." As for Shelton? I don't know. If he did or didn't, it wouldn't surprise me either way.
What I am involved in is the leaderless activism group that Ernest allows use of the Freedom's Phoenix workshop, and I am among the group of people that fully support Pastor Anderson in his struggle against the warrantless inland ICE checkpoints, but that is where my support ends. End of story.
I also consider Chris Broughton to be my friend. Do I agree with his religious beliefs? Hell no! (no pun intended) But do I like him otherwise? Hell yes!
In closing, don't be such a whiny bottom Stephen....come on the show and take it like a man for once.

So Anderson is now responsible for killing people in Iraq and Afghanistan...lol...how about just a little common sense?
The reality is that the Pastor is clearly not a violent person, has no history of violence.
To compare him to radicals who openly embrace violence is insane.
I don't agree with Anderson's religious views including his stance on gays. I don't even believe in the Old Testament, because when Christ came he said that he brings the new law.
But to see such venom spewed by people who claim to be about Jesus and love is sickening. Total hypocrisy.
When I pray to God, I pray that the plunder of my house will end. My house was robbed recently but I did not fret, because there’s a limit to what they could steel. What Barack Obama has stolen and continues to steel is beyond what I can make in this life, my children’s lives and their children’s lives.

Regardless of your beliefs about the militia movement, which is protected under the Second Amendment and by the laws of Nature, Ernest has never to my knowledge advocated force or fraud on any other human being, either as an individual or as a member of any "group," including the Viper Reserves.

This ongoing, "non-story" story continues to absolutely amaze me! In 2005 our small community church was seized by Counter Terrorism Agents and my wife and I (the pastor) arrested on criminal charges for refusing to incorporate Christ under the state. Now there's a story the whole country - especially the body of Christ - ought to be marching in the streets about, yet whose telling you that story?

As a side note maybe someone should quote Romans 9:13 to Mr. Randall Holmes holding up the "Who would Jesus hate?" sign. God hated Esau and since God and Jesus are the same so did Jesus. There is A LOT of hatred in the bible so a pretty stupid sign from someone who obviously hasn't read the book he is supposedly living his life by... sadly not that uncommon in the least though.

Americans need to understand that we are entering a second civil war period. The people on the right are modern day Confederates. And just like their predecessors, they are willing to do anything, ANYTHING, to have their way. These nuts are willing to see the union dissolved if their insane views are not allowed to prevail.
Liberals or Progressives you are in the mist of a cultural civil war. The right knows it and is fighting like they know it. If you don't wake up and decide that you are willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure that sanity prevails in this country, these nuts will take this country back to the stone age.
I suggest that the vehicle plates of his parishioners be recorded. His parishioners might also be recorded for youtube. These are very dangerous people. The community should know who they are.

American Timothy McViegh is one example of a brain washed individual that listened to so called government haters who did not themselves set off the bomb he set off by the Federal building that day in 1995 but they are just as responsable for evoking in his mind, heart and spirit such a hate for government that he went out and committed this crime against humanity.
Further, I will not go on any radio show whose host seems (in my opinion) to sympathize with a murdering group of thugs that think nothing of killing innocent men, women and children. Leonard Clark brags about his so-called service in Iraq but forgets to mention he was run out of the military after being found guilty of multiple serious UCMJ violations.
Second and most important, Clark is a well known "9/11 Truther" who believes the 9/11 attacks were planned and carried out by President Bush. Clark also believes the Pentagon was struck by a Missile, and not an airliner.
Clark is a close associate of "9/11 truther" and discredited and mentally unstable Jeff Farias. Farias hosts a low rated, Fringe Left-wing internet radio show and is also a longtime 9/11 conspiracy theorist who claims the twin towers were brought down by a controlled demolition.

First of all, get your facts straight. I am not a 9/11 Truther. Second, I recieved my honorable discharge from the U.S. Army and an Army Commendation Medal for my service in Iraq. Unfortunately, when people like you who have long attacked me for standing for what is right, you don't like to tell the truth or even research what you're saying. Even in the military with the U.C.M.J. you are innocent until proven guilty. I was innocent and am still innocent. If the same liars who lied about Pat Tillman's death had really believed the crap that the Bush Crime Family was telling them to use against me they could have at any time, just like a civilian prosecutor have filed charges against me. That being said it gives you no special privileges to lie indiscriminately. Fox News is a 24 hour news channel and not the devil. Once again I find the lack of citations for such hate spewers as Oberlmann and Maddow and the majority of MSNBC oddly lacking here. I see you rail against the Bush administration and yet Obama is doing the EXACT same thing and no one is calling him on it. Code Pink showed up with bloody hands yet for Obama the protest is white roses?!?!?!?
You scream against torture yet say very little about how one would be treated by the other side. You and other say that if we don’t act humanely we will in turn be treated poorly… tell me sir… exactly what is worse then having your head sawed off by a knife? If I had a choice, I know who I would rather be captured by… bring on the water boarding! Here is one to ponder, is the sheep nobler because it lets itself be eaten by the wolf? You people have no understanding of the planet you grew up on!
Freedom is not free; your very service proves that. Survival must be won or extinction is the result… plain and simple. Sure we have civilization programmed into us and that is a good thing because cooperation can be an excellent strategy for survival but when threatened, survival must cancel out programming. *Corrections to mental patient Leonard Clark's continued obfuscations, distortions and lies
First of all, no branch of the service would accept Leonard Clark, he was deemed a mentally unstable danger to brave and honorable troops.
Next, Leonard Clark's multiple UCMJ violations had nothing to do with covering up torture, that's another Clark lie. Among other violations, Clark refused to obey lawful orders from a superior officer and was deemed to have endangered other troops. Simple as that.
The brave, honorable soldiers in Clark's outfit don't want him back, they hate him. They consider him a mentally unstable danger and a traitor.
In exchange for not going to jail, Clark negotiated a release from service. The army was happy to see him go and due to Clark's obvious mental illness and to save time and avoid hassle, granted Clark an honorable discharge. A common practice with trouble makers and mental cases like Clark.
As far as the 9/11 conspiracy charge, if Clark has renounced his support of this extreme bizarre group that's great. The problem is that in the past, every time the mentally ill and unstable Jeff Farias made his bizarre 9/11 conspiracy claims, Leonard Clark supported him. So I guess now Leonard Clark agrees Farias is crazy?
Finally, Leonard Clark should disclose all the left-wing groups, recall petitions and other failed organizations he's headed or been associated with so people looking in can apply context to his alleged activism.

That Clark has distanced himself from the 9/11 truthers is signifcant. I wish Jeff Farias would do the same. I like Jeff, but that 9/11 crap was something a lot of lefties signed on to during the Bush admin. Now they're sheepish about it, and rightly so. That movement's deader than DJ AM.
Clark's involvement in liberal activism, however Quixotic, should not preclude him from organizing protests against Pastor Anderson. That's just silly. I'm glad someone did it, and will continue to do so.
Finally, on Clark's military record, it sounds like he got over there and didn't like what he saw. Does that make him crazy? Maybe in the military's book. Not mine.

I am not sorry at all for being his companion. I am a disabled Vietnam Vet with the after effect of agent orange and my legs are dying but until they do, I will be by that liberal, progressive side and I am not even a Democrats nor Republicans. I try to have an open-mind when it comes to things that affect the American people. I tell you this, when you place the needs of others first, I will call you a friend.

I will say one thing about this William Crum fellow, he's much more articulate than the mentally ill liar Leonard Clark.
Just a few corrections to Leonard Clark's deranged, delusional rant including all the typical Clark lies.

This google search will show that on July 19th, 2005 specialist Leonard Clark was found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of 13 UCMJ violations. 11 article 92 violatons and 2 article 134 violations. Reckless endangerment and failure to obey orders. Clark was fined and lost a stripe.
It's a matter of public record. But Clark will still to this day deny it and continues to lie about it. Because Leonard Clark is insane! Clark was found guilty 13 times, it's in the military record, but Clark lies and denies!

I'm 6'1", 185 lbs. and never been in Texas. I never supported the Iraq invasion. I opposed it. Again, more Clark delusion, mental illness and lies.

Doesn't exactly sound like the Caine Mutiny here. And if he was such a danger to other soldiers, as Danny says, why did they keep Clark on as a soldier? Sorry, Danny, that charge falls flat.
Danny obviously hates Clark. But where's the evidence of the mental stuff, Danny? Show it to us, give us a link, something, to prove you're not making it up.
Re: Scott Ritter, who you didn't explain, was once UN weapons inspector in Iraq (take your meds, Danny, and remember, not everyone's as ideologically fixated as you). Danny mentions some allegations against Ritter, but charges were ultimately dismissed.
To summarize: so because Clark supposedly believed what Ritter had to say about the Iraq War, and because Clark was punished for running a blog while in Iraq that talked about stuff that the military didn't want talked about, therefore he should not be allowed to organize a peaceful protest against a Tempe Pastor who wants to see our President dead?
I would call that a logical fallacy if there ever was one.

Also, Scott Ritter's charges were not dismissed. Ritter was caught twice soliciting sex from children online. His mugshot is public record. Ritter copped a plea which was continued without a finding. After six months of probation and court ordered child sex offender psychiatric treatment, Ritter came back to court to request the charges be expunged and the FILE SEALED. Why would Ritter want the file sealed? Take a guess!
The prosecutor that allowed Ritter's plea was fired for keeping the deal secret from her boss. But make no mistake, Scott Ritter is a known internet child sex predator.

Clark has started and failed at least five recall attempts aimed at Republican elected officials never coming close to success in any recall attempt. Clark is obsessed and delusional. Dangerous!

Also, I am not sure why all the vehemenance over militias and such... McVeigh wasn't really in one as he was primarily a loner who would talk with most anyone who hated the government and committed his crime due to the Waco event.

As to people owning guns, it is guaranteed in the Constitution whether you like it or not… and in fact, Title 10, Subtitle A, Chapter 13, Section 311 of the United States Code provides for both "organized" and "unorganized" civilian militias. While the organized militia is made up of members of the National Guard and Naval Militia, the unorganized militia is composed entirely of private individuals. There are many militias out there but (as with the left and right nut jobs) it’s only the extreme ones that usually get any attention.
Additionally, having looked over the data on Ernest Hancock, I will say he is an idiot that should never see a position of responsibility such as public office or even head dog catcher. I always find it funny to hear the truthers talk about how dumb Bush was but yet believe he could pull off this miracle of miracles! Even Popular Science, as apolitical a magazine as you can get, has debunked this one and when one considers ALL THE PEOPLE required being complicit with this the stupidity of it really starts to show. Anyone who buys into this has serious problems with logic and reasoning abilities or a hidden agenda… you will have to decide.
