Sheriff Joe Arpaio, haggard and worn at the Sun City book signing.

Mon Jun 30, 2008 at 09:21:14 AM

bleary.JPG
Jeez, Joe, take a nap, will ya? You're too old to keep up this pace...

Ancient oldsters being wheeled around by their 70-year-old "children." Blue-hairs lugging about their own oxygen tanks. A withered old crone with literally one tooth in her mouth, eager to get her book signed. The occasional redneck. Some broad from former KIA-peddler Rusty Childress' bike outfit Riders U.S.A. buying a half dozen copies of Joe's new tome. This is what the line looked like at the Barnes and Noble in Surprise on Saturday. Like you needed proof that Joe's big in the Sun City area, Joe's core audience of alter kockers bought an estimated 80 or so books during the book signing.

oldsters.JPG
Joe's fans are so old, when they went to school, they didn't have history...

I say "estimated" because the bookstore employees acted like they were scared witless of press, and clammed up over even the most picayune of factoids. Remember back when people who worked in bookstores were not pathetic corporate drones? That's a subject for a different day, of course, but real bookstores used to employ a more independent breed. Nowadays, they seem mostly cowed and obedient. They might as well be selling plumbing supplies instead of books.

A lone Riders USA Member loading up on books. Who knew they could read?

Joe himself looked tired, washed-out, beat. Although a few sign-wielding protesters were out in the 100-degree heat, representin' por la causa, there was no one on the inside intent on interrupting the geriatric love-fest with an embarrassing question, as in the past. Nor were there any TV news cameras around. I got there a little late, with Joe wrapping up his remarks to the living cemetery before him.

sunshine.JPG
"Real criminals," like Joe and his flunkies.

"Here's that guy from the New Times," announced Joe when he saw me. "He follows me around. Yeah, the one in the green shirt...That was a very vicious article you wrote about my book signing, slander and everything else. Keep it up."

"It's the real truth, Joe," I shot back. Joe was referring to my review of his book Joe's Law in New Times' most recent issue.

The grannies in attendance booed and yelled, "Remove him!" Some dough-faced alter kocker dood told me to, "Get out of here." I told him, politely, that it's still a free country, despite what he wants it to be. Do all old people end up this way, or is it just that authority-worshipping a-holes retire to Sand Land? There certainly are a butt-load of them around. And, sadly, they vote, though many barely know what day it is or where they are.

You'll get no argument here...

Some idiot lady stood up and thanked Joe for sending the illegals back to Mexico.

"They are here illegally," growled Joe. "And it is a federal crime, regardless of what anyone says."

I pointed out that it's a civil offense to be in the country illegally. There's a potential fine, and the government can remove you. Big whoop. It ain't a crime. You don't go to prison for it. Allow me to quote none other than nativist hero and Colorado Republican Representative Tom Tancredo, who wrote in USA Today two years ago, "Right now, illegal presence in the USA is not a crime; it is a civil infraction."

There is a part of the U.S. Code called "improper entry by alien," for which you can receive up to six months in jail and a fine for crossing the border illegally, but they have to catch you in the act. Otherwise, it's difficult to prove. It's as if Joe and his Geritol-addled posse have never heard of people coming to this country on a visa, and then overstaying it.

William Crum, giving the Sheriff what for...

Anyway, Joe finally finished his blather, and took up his autograph pen at a table in the music section, which was cut off from the rest of the bookstore. Joe sat next to his wife, Ava, as a line of the aged shuffled forward to greet him. While this was going on, I ducked outside to talk to the anti-Joe demonstrators out on the sidewalk. These included Green Party candidate William Crum, who's running for Congress against incumbent Republican Trent Franks from the 2nd Congressional District, as well as local activists Andy Hernandez and Sunshine Watson.

stopjoe.JPG
Activist Andy Hernandez finds some shade while blasting Joe...

"I'm just disgusted with Arpaio," said Watson, when asked why she was braving the scorching temps. "I'm disgusted with the racial profiling. He's pretty much instilling fear in people. I shudder to think what crimes are going unreported because people are afraid to call the police, maybe because they have family members who are illegal or they're illegal themselves."

noarpaio.JPG
Just say no to Joe...

Nearby, Andy Hernandez concurred.

"I think he's racist," explained Hernandez of Arpaio. "It's just not right what he represents."

As fat men are likely to spontaneously combust in that kind of heat, I scooted back to the B&N, and some sweet AC. Inside, Joe looked like he was about to pass out. Hey, the guy is 76. And it'd been a rough week, what with Mesa Police Chief George Gascon stealing his spotlight, forcing the MCSO to keep a low profile as they hunted Hispanics in the streets of Mesa. I stood a couple of yards away from Arpaio, waiting for him to finish with his antique fans before sparring with him verbally, as we've done many times in the past. But as soon as he was finished, he slunk out a backdoor exit with his bodyguards, so enervated he lacked the pep to banter with a reporter.

grandkid.JPG
The figure continually gets larger...

I don't know if there are any other book signings. Seems like Joe's finished, in more ways than one. The guy doesn't have the luxury of retiring. There's so much corruption in the MCSO, that Joe has to stay in office till he croaks of old age. Otherwise, his regime's books will get a good going-over by his successor. And that likely wouldn't be pretty for Joe, Chief Deputy David Hendershott and others.

The once-mighty Joe is now a sad, little man, imprisoned by all his misdeeds. If he weren't so evil, I'd almost feel sorry for him.

I meant to say "undocumented." The cat doesn't think so well in the heat.

Thanks for pointing out again that it is a civil offense. I think too many people are ignorant to that fact!!!

D.J. Racist Ryke says:

The F-Bastard is right on, about how Joe is about to "croak" on the job. The old motherfucker does indeed looked as if he needs some serious eternal beauty sleep.
That's why we oughta vote for change and that means voting for Dan Saban....

However, I don't feel "sad" to see an end of an era. We've waited for far too long to see this sudden end of Joe. And we don't have to wait long enough this time, come this Novemeber.
This Novemeber marks a new beginning. And the oldies as usual will not accept that change in their decrepit minds of the friggin past.
Realities are harsh for them and they do not have any hint of energy left to accept them so they continue to live a life full of lies.
Sadly, that's what being an old Natavists means today.

Once again Lemmons you commie loving bastard, your own words prove your lack of understanding of the issue at hand.

It strikes me as extremely sad that you dedicate so much time to trying to make, in your words, a "washed up, tired, beat" old man look bad in this toilet paper.

I am often reminded of the fact that no matter how hard you try you really are nothing more than a brown stain on the underwear of life.

Joe will win his reelection and life will go on as usual......you will still lack personal hygeiene and taxes will go up.

Don't feel sorry for Bozo Joe, he deserves all the time in hell he has coming to him and then some more.

These old farts that support Bozo Joe do so because they have only one thing in common, it's called Senility.

I would like to know who's paying for all the MCSO Body Gaurds Bozo Joe seems to think he needs on his personal time.

Another Bozo Joe waste of Tax Payers Money.

RAIAJim says:

Too funny, the Bird reporting about another person looking tired, washed out, beat. Have you not looked at a mirror recently Stephen??? Probably not, and we all can understand why you'd be avoiding any reflection of yourself.

Can't wait until November, silence from all your pathetic losers as you crwl back under the rocks you emerged from.

Congrat's to The West Side for keeping the pressure on Arpaio and letting the blue hairs know that Democracy still exists. We need to keep our eyes open for the next Arpaio sighting.
There was a time when Arpaio would go out and give the Protesters hell. Those days are done. We are winning.
Joe's days are numbered.

USA member says:

Well, you all talk about us wanting the laws upheld, but, yet you failed to tell us about the LARAZA MS13 gangs they are the RACIEST bunch, they would like no more than to kill every AMERICAN, so they can take over. At least the USA citizens had one person in law enforcement that UPHOLDS THE LAWS of the USA.
You talk about the money for lawsuits? Well, i think it is time for AMERICANS to start to filing lawsuits aginst the illegals who are murdering and rapeing our children, and women. And killing police officers, and yet the police dont up hold the laws. By arresting the illegals. Illegals are costing AMERICAN TAXPAYERS millions of dollars every month, and you want them here?
BS, get your heads out of your asses and look to see what is happening. ILLEGALS are collecting over 300 million dollars a month just in the state of Ten. Hospitals are going bankrupt because these people come over here and get the AMERICAN TAXPAYER to pay for everything for them, while they work for cash, and are loitering in parking lots, causeing nothing but, trouble. 85 hospitals have close in LA COUNTY alone, because these people come here, and they have no intensions to pay there bills, they use the hospital emergency room as a FREE CLINIC, the AMERICAN TAXPAYER will have to pay the bills, these ILLEGALS could careless. We are supposed to give give give to these people, and yet they only come here to work, and feed there families, hell what about the AMERICAN TAXPAYER? They dont have bills and they dont have to feed there families?????
It is time for the AMERICAN TAXPAYER to stand up, and fight for this COUNTRY. like we did at PEARL HARBOR and all the other wars. We NEED to SECURE these BORDERS, and send these people home. I dont give a dam, if they have to feed there fucking families, they can do it in there COUNTRY NOT MINE.And just because WE want the LAWS UPHELD does not mean a DAM THING.

Great comment about the corporate drones at the B&N bookstore. I do remember when the book stores were places that people would gather and have open dialog with interesting staff. The Sheriff shows he is unreceptive to any point of view except his own. His followers are giving us a glimpse of why Arizona is in trouble. The posters and signs outdoors say it all. Are the taxpayers funding his "book tour"?

jimjim says:

Dear USA member,

Thank you for your post. Just one question: what the heck are you trying to communicate?

I've read literal transcripts of American Sign Language that were easier to follow.

Seriously, bullet point out the facts, as you understand them, that support your contention and I'll see if I can give you a cogent response.

Slavyanski says:

I have noticed that every thread about this goes on pretty much the same. You point out a fact to the Nativists, such as the fact that this is a civil crime we are talking about, and they go on and on about how Joe is "emforsing duh laaaaawlll!!" Well in case the spelling-impaired morons didn't notice, he obviously ISN'T enforcing the law because he's got 40,000 outstanding warrants out there, and he's busy dicking around in front of cameras and going after day-laborers.

Hell yeah, forget them rapists and murders! Get those LANDSCAPERS and construction workers!!!

And when, PLEASE for the love of ALLAH most benificent: WHY CAN'T ANY OF YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION AS TO WHY THEY ARE SO CONCERNED WITH ONE PARTICULAR LAW, WHICH ISN'T EVEN A CRIMINAL OFFENSE.

"Nickel Bag Joe"? I see it more as "Douche Bag Joe". Keep up the free speech and truthful reporting as the only media in this valley that does not buckle under fear of retribution from MCSO and Co. Thank You.

Hell I just felt like bitchin. what the heck, we can say what we want right?
Sheriff Joe is doing his job, these other jackasses are not doing the jobs they are suppose to uphold.

Emil Pulsifer says:

Even the (paid?) puff-pieces touting Arpaio sound like a joke these days.

A case in point is the item published in The Arizona Republic on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, in the magazine-style "community" insert called "The Phoenix Republic", on page 22.

Just in case it isn't obvious, the page has been labeled "Opinions". Well, that's fine. Because when I saw an item by "Community Columnist" Natalie June Reilly entitled "Heart races in presence of ... Wyatt Earp of our time" I thought for a moment that perhaps it was a news item.
Especially when I saw a photo of the cover of Arpaio's new book, "Joe's Law", with a caption underneath reading "Natalie June Reilly respects and admires anyone who holds tight to his guns".

Exactly who is Natalie June Reilly? I'm not sure, except that she's published a children's book called "My Stick Family: Helping Children Cope With Divorce". The Arizona Republic describes her as "a freelance writer and communications specialist".

The freelance writer part I understand. I don't know what a "communications specialist" is in this context, unless it's a paid shill (aka public relations consultant).

Mind you, I'm not saying that's what Natalie June Reilly is: merely that I don't know what "communications specialist" means here, and that's my guess, given the slow economy. Perhaps Len Sherman, the ghost-writer (er, co-author) of Arpaio's latest opus, is also a communications specialist. He's written another fascinating biographical work called "Popcorn King: How Orville Redenbacher and his Popcorn Charmed America".

At any rate, Natalie June Reilly's piece begins with an absolutely marvelous bit of prose:

"It was with eager curiosity and a humble amount of admiration that I attended a recent book signing for Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his latest book, Joe's Law."

That's as opposed to reluctant curiosity -- such as one might experience passing a lethal car accident on the freeway. I'm not sure what "a humble amount of admiration" refers to. Presumably one might experience an emotion called "humble admiration" but that isn't what Natalie June Reilly has referred to. She has deliberately made "humble" an adjectival modifier of "amount of admiration", and since she is a communications specialist I think it's safe to presume that she knows her stuff. Evidently the amount of admiration she feels for Joe Arpaio is small in size. Well and good. But it gets better:

"Now, I had brushed shoulders with the man a couple of times before at parties, but never did I have the gumption to amble up to him in my pretty party dress and introduce myself. And it wasn't because he was unapproachable, quite the contrary."

Well, of course he wasn't unapproachable. He isn't known as a media whore for nothing. Stephen Lemons, take note: try wearing a pretty party dress and a deferential expression on your hirsute, saturnine face the next time you attend one of these gala events. The item continues:

"He was very approachable, that is if you don't have a problem with getting past unusually large strong arms trained to crush your skull with their highly trained and mammoth-size fists should you appear suspect."

Those arms are doubly trained, don't you know. First, to crush your skull -- but with mammoth-size fists which are additionally highly trained. We don't know what the additional training is for: evidently that's highly classified. But in any case, they don't belong to the wizened, gnome-like, disappointingly small Arpaio, as the text immediately makes clear:

"However, it wasn't his strapping bodyguards that bothered me. I suppose I was more intimidated by Joe's giant persona since his reputation precedes him. Seriously, he has become a legend in these parts, the Wyatt Earp of our time. And although I always imagined him to be a much bigger man, he is a force to be reckoned with."

Well sure, you know, Wyatt Earp: the Arizona county sheriff who was the subject of numerous lawsuits and who exaggerated his law-enforcement experience in order to make a name for himself. And "giant persona" is a euphemism for big fat ego. Check.

"And I have always held a great deal of respect and admiration for any man (or woman) who holds tight to his guns as it relates to the greater good, despite the critics and the violent assault of their opponents."

Despite her pretty party dress, Natalie June Reilly here demonstrates her feminist credentials: her respect and admiration extends not only to men but also to women who hold tight to his guns -- as it relates to the greater good.

But just when you thought that Natalie June Reilly's tongue couldn't lodge itself any deeper in her cheek, she quotes her mother ("the only brown-eyed, Hispanic-American girl in the bunch"), who, as they reached the front of the line of book buyers waiting for Joe's signature, turned to little Natalie June in her pretty party dress and said: "If he asks me for proof of citizenship, I'm going to turn around and ask him for proof of his."

Well. As Natalie June Reilly says, I think her mother must be "well read, well informed, and quite simply the wisest woman I know".

(Incidentally, I'd like to provide an online link to Natalie June Reilly's piece, but I can't seem to find it using the patented obscuro-ware at azcentral.com so you'll just have to take my word for it all.)

Catherine Ruane says:

Geeze.....I, by no means do I agree with sheriff Joe's harassment of undocumented people in the AZ valley area but all of these personal swipes against him regarding his age smacks of a prejudice we could call Ageism. Those "put-downs" weaken the criticism of the sheriff and reflect negatively and pathetically on the person issuing them. Look at what you are saying and think about it before you say it.

You can disagree with a person without dumping on personal traits. We as a society who has agree that Women, and ethnic groups are not to be criticizes for their innate essence, so why is it O.K. to put down a person for their age? It is just another way to separate a group from the community.

Coz says:

I wouldn't Piss on Arpaio if his Ass was on fire.

Dennis Gilman says:

Catherine,

Thanks for posting. Its is nice to hear someone respectfully disagree. I hope you continue to post your veiws. You make a valid point, however, it is not one I share.

Arpaio is a man who excepts no responsibility for anything that has been negative in the last 15 years. With over 44 million in law suits and horrid deaths, not a single sign of remorse. He chose MLK weekend, Easter Weekend and Confirmation weekend to terrorize mostly Catholic families and Communities with his sweeps, yet claims to be a good Catholic. He kicked a catholic Chaplain out and gave the reason "because it's MY jail and I DECIDE who is allowed in here". (That Chaplain spoke at the County Board of Supervisors after Arpaio did-disagreeing with him). That Chaplain has served in the jails honorably and never used his role as Chaplain to discredit Arpaio, in fact, they didn't even have a reason, and said they did not need one. Unfortunately, Catholic Chaplains are a needed commodity and he will not be replaced easily. And certainly wont be by one who is a supporter of Arpaio's. The Faith-Based community is speaking out against his Racial Profiling in alarming numbers.

He has torn apart families with his profiling sweeps and left children without working parents-some who have been trying to become citizens for 15 years but were unable to due to a system that is so broken that unless you have money-you are out of luck. The only crimes they were convicted of was broken windshield and Misdemeanor for no documents to be in Arizona.
So if one of us called Arpaio old or his followers in Sun City old and closed minded, or even harsher-I cant apologize for that as Sun City will vote in record numbers for the man and will refuse to hear any other voices on the subject. And if you reread these posts, the most vicious, slanderous comments come from Arpaios supporters.

aaaahahahah says:

wow. funny stuff. thanks for all the laugh you jingoist pigs- its great to see the moron mantra of AMERICA (in all caps) and ILLEGAL (all caps) over and over....are you for real?!?!?! Serious. Man, if some of these nuts actually had the balls to say this shit to MY face....yet they wont. Coward Xenophobes, I got your number- better walk (or waddle in your fat white asses' case) down the lit up streets...

Taxpayers alert says:

The Sheriff is not doing his job --- it is an election year and he is out in "spades" as he was in 2004, doing his witch-hunts, only this year it's "illegals". Wake up Arizona, you can no longer afford what his ego is costing us!
