Earlier this week Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano diverted almost $2 million dollars in funding from Joe Arpaio and the county sheriff’s office - by executive order. The funding had been originally appropriated by the Arizona state legislature specifically for the sheriff’s activities relating to enforcement of state human smuggling laws.
In a press conference Wednesday, Napolitano stated that Sheriff Joe was using state money to cause stess in the “illegal community”, and that money would no longer be available. Since beginning the “crime prevention sweeps”, Arpaio’s office has busted over 900 illegal aliens and smugglers - many of them with existing felonies.
Here you have a state governor openly admitting she wants to protect the “illegal community”. The MCSO is one of a few local law enforcement agencies in America (if not the only) aggressively going after the illegal invaders.

Why is it that those who clamor for greater autonomy in local government (when it supports their right-wing agenda) are the first to cry for outside intervention whenever local authorities refuse to pander to their distorted sense of priorities?

Similarly, why is it that Uncle Joe and his supporters insist on describing these street-shows with euphemisms, referring to them as "crime suppression sweeps" or "saturation patrols" -- as if they were some sort of general law enforcement activity -- yet defend these with the (erroneous) claim that Arpaio is the only one enforcing immigration laws? If their purpose is to enforce immigration laws (however haphazardly and inefficiently) then they should be called illegal immigrant roundups.

Apparently this game of words is played because an open admission of the basic purpose of these sweeps leads naturally to the question of racial profiling, since individuals being stopped and interrogated are not engaged in activities and behaviors associated with crimes like human smuggling. They are not running a drop-house. They are not driving across desert sections of the Arizona border in a truck crammed with Mexican nationals. They are not caught as a result of informants or other police intelligence.

Instead, individuals caught in Uncle Joe's immigration enforcement dragnet in cities like Phoenix and Mesa are simply driving in local traffic like any other residents. True, they are stopped on the pretext of minor traffic violations, but if drivers were stopped at random regardless of race, these sweeps could not serve the purpose of immigration enforcement, since the number of individuals arrested for immigration related offenses would be low.

Instead, we find routinely that nearly half, sometimes more, of those arrested are taken on immigration related charges. And this can only be the case if brown-skinned Hispanics are being stopped more often than others. A lot more often, since many such individuals are no doubt legal residents, so in order to obtain a sufficiently large quotient of illegals to arrest, Uncle Joe's dragnet must (generally) sweep up even larger proportions of brown-skinned Hispanics, letting most of them go while skimming off the "cream" of illegals used to justify his activities for public relations purposes.

As for this figure "over 900 illegal aliens arrested" that is NOT related to Uncle Joe's "saturation patrols". The Arizona Republic very recently reported that these sweeps "netted nearly 200 arrests for various crimes, at least 84 of which were related to people in the country illegally".

Now in my book, even if you are gung-ho about immigration enforcement, 84 arrests isn't much to crow about given the total number of man-hours (including overtime) expended by literally hundreds of MCSO deputies and others in the course of several months worth of sweeps. There are more than 500,000 illegal immigrants working in Arizona. Obviously, random traffic stops are about the least likely way to locate and arrest large numbers of illegal immigrants and their smugglers. For that you need to concentrate on criminal syndicates -- their members, their routes, their drophouses, and other bases of support and supply -- and for that in turn you need real police work, not the media-hyped street sweeps which constitute the Uncle Joe Show.

Does anyone have the figures for how much these sweeps have cost Arizona taxpayers? Because even as we speak Uncle Joe is threatening to leave vacant MCSO positions unfilled, and to otherwise leave vital law-enforcement services on hold, in order to continue his self-serving Uncle Joe Show -- which is little more than a form of taxpayer-funded advertisement for the "re-elect Joe Arpaio for Sheriff" campaign, when all is said and done -- though I must admit that Arpaio is a consummate politician: expending vast public resources on a problem so broad that his efforts can scarcely be described as cosmetic, he nevertheless has managed to hoodwink a small but disproportionally vocal section of the public into believing that he is doing more than the U.S. Border Patrol, ICE, state and federal multi-agency task forces, and local police agencies, combined.

I don't know what the figure of "900" that Uncle Joe keeps bandying about refers to. The so-called free press which quotes Arpaio and his media flacks aren't doing their job. Their job ISN'T to uncritically quote controversial public figures with a habit of offering misleading statistics, by the way. Professional journalists would challenge, verify, and properly define such figures. Mr. Lemons is exempted from this criticism because MCSO and New Times are not on speaking terms, and it's difficult to make someone who isn't speaking to you define and substantiate their figures. Also, Mr. Lemons isn't reporting such figures without challenging them.

Well one of the reasons why Lemons cannot challenge the figures that Emil pointed out, was due to the very fact that Joe Nutfuck does not respect the Freedom of the Press, let alone the Freedom of Information Act. He only favors reporters or newspapers who stands behind his ol` fanny and kiss it. Judge recuses self after mayor proclaims he’ll “fix” ticket for her
Guadalupe Mayor Rebecca Jimenez

GUADALUPE – In the one-square-mile town of Guadalupe, which has a population of about 5,500, approximately 72.3 percent are Latino (60.7 percent Mexican), 48.5 percent are American Indian, 1.3 percent are black and 1.5 percent are white.
In that sea of 5,500 residents, roughly 80 are people without color.
According to Guadalupe Mayor Rebecca Jimenez, the town is a dual-cultural community, those cultures being Yaqui and/or of Mexican descent. Jimenez accused deputies from Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office of treating victims “as if they are criminals” and said word travels fast in the close-knit community “about the insensitive and even abusive behavior of the deputies when they interact with our people.”
Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, white apologist to the illegal alien community, jumped into the fray proclaiming Guadalupe’s crime rate ranked near the bottom compared to the rest of the Valley and said Guadalupe had only one violent crime last month.
Jimenez and Gordon called Arpaio’s crime suppression sweeps racial profiling aimed at illegal aliens.
When 98.5 percent of the population is comprised of people of color, the chances are exceedingly high whomever MCSO pulls over will be a person of color.
After Jimenez announced she doesn’t want MCSO doing crime suppression operations in her town, Arpaio sent her a 180-day notice to terminate their contract with the town.
District Commander Tim Campbell, who has worked the Guadalupe beat for 30 years, was surprised by Gordon’s statement and said, “I don’t know where Mayor Gordon gets those statistics. They’re completely inaccurate and frankly they’re offensive to the 65 deputies who work out in the east valley.”
According to Campbell, Guadalupe is a very violent community and during the months of January, February and March, there were 13 stabbings and shootings, citing “That’s a lot of violence for one square mile.”
As far as MCSO is concerned, the city of Phoenix is more than welcome to take over the contract.
Campbell told Gordon his statements have caused major problems for deputies working in Guadalupe, with people pointing, calling them names and flipping them the finger.
Stating Guadalupe is “a hostile environment” and has always been a difficult place to work, Campbell said “because of baseless inaccurate comments by Mayor Gordon and Mayor Jimenez, it’s now become a very dangerous place for our deputies to work.”
Jimenez said, even before being appointed mayor in December 2007, she’s had “several encounters with deputies that illustrate the ignorance and prejudice of the sheriff’s deputies.”
The ignorance seemed to be on the other foot a couple of weeks ago when Jimenez was pulled over for driving at night with only one operational headlight.
After the deputy informed her as to why he pulled her over, Jimenez asked, “Is there a town code or something that allows you to pull me over for only having one working headlight?”
Deputy Brown responded, “Yes, ma’am, there is actually an Arizona statute that allows me to conduct a traffic stop on vehicles with only one operating headlight.”
Although she was driving with a broken headlight and had no proof of insurance or registration with her, Jimenez claimed the traffic stop was Arpaio’s way of retaliating against her and asked the deputy how he “liked working for a sheriff who racially profiles against people with brown skin.”
“I continued to remain silent,” wrote Brown in his narrative of the traffic stop.
When Brown attempted to explain the citation he was about to give Jimenez, she interrupted and said, “You already told me that you pulled me over for my headlight, I’ll just have to go to Judge Melton and take care of it …”
As soon as the ticket was filed, Guadalupe Municipal Court Judge Robert Melton wisely recused himself and transferred the citation to another jurisdiction.
Jimenez, who has a criminal record that spans about a decade, has been cited at least seven times since 1997 for dog at large on a public street and/or failure to license dog.
In 2004 she pled guilty to dog at large in a public street and was fined $95.
That same year she charged with disorderly conduct and criminal damage. In a plea agreement, Jimenez pled guilty to the disorderly conduct charge and was fined $555.
In 2005, after pleading guilty to dog at large in a public street, with the failure to license dog and unlawful keeping of dog charges dismissed, Jimenez paid her fine with a bounced check.
While Anna Gaines reported the recall effort against Mayor Phil Gordon was going really well, there were citizens in Guadalupe calling for Jimenez to resign.
Toni Campoi, who served on the Guadalupe Town Council in 1995, has attended every council meeting since Jimenez was appointed last December. She says Jimenez is rude to fellow council members as well as to citizens in the audience.
According to Campoi, because Jimenez was appointed rather than elected, she can’t be recalled and there are three members of council who “got in with less than five votes.”
There is apparently a recall effort against Guadalupe Councilwoman Patricia Jimenez, a cousin of Mayor Jimenez.
Last but not least, Gov. Janet Napolitano openly admitted her open borders agenda by announcing state funds would no longer be given to MCSO for fighting illegal immigration. She said Arpaio’s crime suppression sweeps were “causing trepidation in the illegal immigrant community.”
That triggered citizens of Arizona and other states to donate money to MCSO so Arpaio can keep it up.
