I grew up off of 40th Street and Thomas. I'm 52 years old and that neighborhood was a wonderful place to grow up. My godparents, lived right across the street from us on Cambridge. They were here from Mexico... legally. Everyone in the neighborhood knew each other and enjoyed each other's friendship. There was no graffiti, no gang activity, no grown men standing around in our streets or in the shopping plaza's parking lot. EVERYONE there respected each other and because of that respect they kept their yards, homes and family in order. If somebody didn't want you in their yard you didn't go there. You respected their boundaries. If you spoke another language you spoke it in your home or among others who spoke it because it was considered disrespectful to use it in front of people who didn't speak it. It was ALL about respect.

The problem today is that all of that respect doesn't exist in the illegals who come here. They obviously don't respect our laws or they wouldn't be here without documentation. They certainly don't respect us enough to learn our language to communicate with us. In fact, many blatantly refuse to learn it at all and claim that we should learn theirs! They have no respect for our property or they wouldn't trash our desert, our streets or our neighborhoods.

The respect from many (not all) of them no longer exists. Now they have some sort of sense of entitlement. I believe it is because we allowed them to get by with so much for so long. We went out of our way to translate for them. We ignored all of them coming here illegally... even after we gave them amnesty! Now they feel that their numbers are strong enough to push their way over on us and our laws. They're wrong.

They've forgotten how very important respect is to most of us Americans and that in order to get respect you must give it first.

Sheriff Arpaio and his supporters are creating hatred and divide which is escalating by the day. How long do they think people will take it, as their lives are being destroyed without it becoming a civil war?

Sheriff Arpaio comes from another time and he's ruined the fine state of Arizona.

While it's true that the Cesar Chavez luncheon audience was tailor-made for such a speech, it's also true that these remarks, being newsworthy and interesting, were bound to be widely reported. On March 14th, 12 News reported that the Arizona Auditor General was advancing the audit of MCSO RICO funds (previously scheduled for 2009) to take place "within the next few weeks".

Does anyone know the current status of the Auditor General's investigation? Has it in fact begun?

I feel certain that Mr. Hendershott could offer special insights into the disposition of RICO funds, were he available for comment and inclined to do so. Has anyone heard from him lately?

Authorities statewide have made 446 arrests since December as part of an operation targeting violent gang members with outstanding warrants, Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said Friday.

Operation Checkmate developed from assaults on several state police officers by gang members in the latter half of 2007.

Those arrested were documented gang members wanted for crimes including sexual and aggravated assault, auto theft, criminal damage, drug possession, weapons misconduct, trafficking in stolen property, and probation violations.

He did not want them coming in to take the work of the American citizen agricultural workers, nor did he want them lowering their wages by their presence. People don't know the real history because the illegal Hispanic people and their supporters DON'T WANT THAT KNOWN! Paul Chavez, his own son seems to forget it too.

Our mayor obviously hasn't got or grown the stones to stand up to the Hispanic population and tell them that our laws apply to them too! He's too busy brown nosing them in hopes that they will help him keep his job. I think that he thinks that there are enough of them here now to stand up to us American citizens who want our laws to apply to them and be enforced. He thinks that he's chosen the 'winning side'. I've lived near Cavecreek and Bell for over 18 years, and everyone who lives around there knows that from Cavecreek and Bell up to Greenway and Cavecreek, over to 32nd St. and back down to Bell is known as the square. This neighborhood has always been crime ridden, an epicenter for drug/gang activity in this part of the valley, it's never been safe to walk in, and it's so dangerous that the Police Dept. opened a substation in the local McDonald's years ago.

I am not mad that she sheriff went into a bad neighborhood and tried to clean up. It is not our fault that there are illegals living in the neighborhood that has long been the epicenter for drug/gang activity. It would just be nice to have a clean neighborhood, and taking gang members, drug dealers and rapists off the street is necessary. It's not anyones fault that illegal aliens are their neighbors.

What I *did* find was evidence that the supposed report is bogus. For example, it has its own entry at the snopes.com site devoted to debunking all kinds of Urban Legends. An honest question for those from the anti-immigration crowd..Given things like NAFTA, Us support for corrupt political parties in Mexico and billions of dollars of aid from the US government to the Mexican government, why is it that you believe the buck stops in Mexico? Yes, the Mexican government is corrupt which causes mass poverty in Mexico which causes illegal immigration to the United States, and some of this responsibility is on the shoulders of Mexicans, but some of it is also on the shoulders of the US government and its tax paying citizens who help to keep these corrupt institutions in place with economic and military support. The question is, why is a government that is so harmful to its people receiving so much support from the United States? Well, I believe that the answer is in the question itself. The Mexican government has overwhelmingly embraced things like NAFTA and other neoliberal policies that are beneficial to the United States. Unfortunately for Mexicans, just like NAFTA is hurting workers here it is also hurting workers in Mexico. But, the Mexican government is able to remain in power with support from the United States because it has embraced neoliberalism, despite the devastating impact of such policies on the working class. What I see when I read these posts is workers fighting workers, when the politicians in both countries are the puppeteers pulling their strings. Disgruntled workers in the US have a lot more in common with disgruntled workers in Mexico than they do with the politicans they vote for and the government they support with their tax dollars. The only way to solve these problems is to look at their causes and not just their outcomes. Both sides must develop an honest discussion about what's going on in our world, otherwise we will continue to waste our energy fighting eachother when the problem is obviously much bigger than illegal immigration.

No reasonable mind could read some of these posts and not see that white, euro-centric fear mongering is at the heart of the anti-immigration debate in Arizona. The ignorance and hate on display here is astounding not only in the fact that the statistics they pull out of thin air are so wildly wrong, but that so many people just regurgitate it without even thinking how impossible these numbers really are.

It appears, however, that people are starting to wake up to these lies and are beginning to question them openly. Arpaio is losing his luster with the voters and will likely lose. Thomas doesn't stand a chance against either of the two Democrats who are running. Maybe then we can get past this nightmare of hatred and get our economy and society back on track.

One more thing: If anyone wants to find out anything from the FBI about undocumented immigrants, I suggest you call them (I did) or visit www.fbi.gov. Nowhere will you find what "Steele" says they reported. Not only that, but they'll tell you they don't collect or report any crime statistics that include immigration status.

This means that if ANYONE tells you they have FBI crime statistics on undocumented immigrants, you can know for certain they are --lying-- to you.

You can then ask yourself why you should trust anyone who willingly lies to you.
