Rush Limbaugh and all the other wing-nuts hate John McCain, and that's good for the Dems.

McCain, ready to squeeze another one out...

On the way back to the office from casting my ballot for Barack Obama, I had fun listening first to OxyContin-boy Rush Limbaugh, then to conservative gasbag Sean Hannity, as they each desperately tore Senator John McCain to shreds in favor of their last-minute golden boy Gov. Mitt Romney.

Uber-rightists, paleoconservatives, nativists, etc., they all loathe John McCain, who's perceived as the standard-bearer of the liberal wing of the GOP. "He supported amnesty!" they scream. And indeed, locally, that's one of the many reasons that the moonhowlers on the right hate his ever-lovin' guts. Truly, moving here from California a few years back was a real revelation to me. Just about every Republican I ran across had nothing but bile for AZ's senior Senator. He's a carpetbagger, his detractors inform you. He cheated on his first wife. Divorced her though she was disabled. Married beer heiress Cindy Lou Hensley because her dad was as rich as Crassus. Used everyone and everything, including the state of Arizona, as a stepping-stone to higher office.

They even question his patriotism, call him the "Manchurian Candidate," wonder if he was really tortured in the Hanoi Hilton. (Despite overwhelming evidence that he was.) And nearly every local Republican who's been around for a sec has a story about McCain blowing his top, usually at an underling or some party backer who didn't do his bidding. He's an arrogant asshole, GOPers will tell you. And that's the judgment of a party of arrogant assholes. With all this animus built up against him, it's amazing that McCain's set for a cake walk in the Grand Canyon State's Republican primary.

Ultimately, I'm hoping, that if Obama is the Democratic nominee, McCain and those that despise him on the far right will help propel Obama into the Oval Office. Already Limbaugh is suggesting it would be better for Hillary Clinton or B-rock to be in the White House instead of a moderate Republican like John McCain. The Web site Real Clear Politics averages all of the polls showing head-to-head match-ups. If it's McCain vs. Clinton, there's a slight advantage for McCain. If it's McCain vs. Obama, that slight margin moves into Obama's field.

It's difficult to see the far right's dissatisfaction with McCain dissipating. Indeed, I expect the anger will intensify. If NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg and/or tinfoil-hatter Ron Paul run as third party candidates, a recent Rasmussen poll shows them pulling more from Republican voters (13% to 17%) than Dems (only 5% to 10%).

Up against Obama, I see McCain as a loser. McCain lacks the youth, the polish, the looks, the speaking ability of Obamarama. Obama oozes health and vigor. He energizes crowds. McCain, with his 71-plus years on this earth, his cancer-ravaged face, his squat, troll-like anatomy, hampered by injuries sustained while in captivity, does not project power or healthfulness. Rather, he reminds one of Ephialtes, the hunchbacked soldier in Frank Miller's 300 who betrays the Spartans to the Persian king Xerxes during the battle of Thermopylae.

McCain also has skeletons, and not all of them as old as the Keating Five scandal. The Washington Post recently reported on McCain's meeting with Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who had his visa revoked by the U.S.government because of his "suspected links to anti-democratic and organized-crime figures." McCain's now campaign manager Rick Davis assisted in putting the two men together in 2006.

Davis told the Post that his contacts with Deripaska "all relate to my private business and have nothing to do with Senator John McCain." The Post said there was no evidence of wrongdoing, or of some sort of tit-for-tat. Still, such coziness with a billionaire recalls a certain coziness with a high-roller named Charles Keating.

Against Hillary, McCain might edge out a win. Hillary's negatives are high. She does not inspire, as does Obama. And I think Republicans would ultimately unify to defeat her. Both she and McCain represent the status quo. A Clinton presidency would be a lightning-rod, drawing the wrath of conservatives. You can pretty much be assured that the woman will get absolutely nothing done while in office.

So the best bet the Dems have is that Obama and McCain earn their respective parties' nominations. Obama will tower over the Republican dwarf, as that dwarf's undermined by the extremists in his own camp. McCain, to borrow a line Jim Carville once lobbed at Bush #1, is yesterday's man. Obama, he's the future.

PS: And to the Ronulans who've commented below, here's another descriptor for your tinfoil titan: bigot.

Did you seriosly just call Ron Paul a "tinfoil-hatter"? You are a pathetic little man.

David Propst says:

I noticed you called Ron Paul a tinfoil-hatter. If you have the time, please read the speech he gave when leaving Congress back in 1984. You can find it here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/paul/paul433.html

He doesn't sound like a tinfoil-hatter to me, rather he sounds like a politician with integrity who votes based on a principled philosophy consistent with his oath of office. Now, I realize that is strange, but that doesn't make him crazy, just rare.

Kelton Baker says:

"...tinfoil-hatter Ron Paul run as third party candidates"
Ha ha. Why must anyone who is anti-establishment, against the status quo always painted as a loony conspiracy nut?

McCain wants a strong U.S. presence in Iraq for "at least 100 more years".
Every single candidate from both parties, except Ron Paul wants enormous deficit spending at levels beyond insane...

yet Ron Paul continues to be labeled as the kook.

Hank Hill says:

Sorry Lemons, this country is still a generation away from electing a man who is half African-American to president. McCain won't do a bad job and the plus side is he'll piss off those far right wingers.

Besides, I like when you have one party in the legislature and another as chief executive. It brings balance to policy.

As for Ron Paul, the fact his lunatic supporters make homemade signs and violate the law in posting them over the freeway ("The laws the law! What don't you understand about the law!) irritates me enough to dismiss him as a nut case.

Poor Hillary, the fact she has stiff competition from Obama should be depressing to her. The guy is a neophyte in comparison.

As for Romney... I'd never vote for that scum bag. He can kiss my hairy ass.

DenisL says:

This is all really quite appalling. (No pun intended!)
Why smear a good man?
I think I now know why the New Republic is down 40% in circulation since 2000. They also likened Ross Perot to Hitler. Just amazing.

Ron Paul in my opinion is an anti-racist, "pro-individual rights" hero.

Finally, it really is not clear why any of the 3 neocons are better than Ron Paul, who is a real conservative, AND it is not clear that any of the other top 5 candidates should be preferred over Ron Paul, when ALL 5 are going to spend us into oblivion and hurt a lot of people.

E.A. says:

I'm still waiting for a Presidential candidate to declare the U.S. overpopulated at 303 million, growing by 3 million annually.

We've been living beyond our ecological carrying-capacity but politicians keep changing the subject to money and growth; as if MORE growth and overcrowding will fix the problems wrought by same.

24/7 depletion of finite (and renewable) natural resources is the ultimate in deficit spending. Countless problems could be solved if the government put the brakes on growthism, starting with the elimination of tax breaks after a family exceeds two children.

Lynch M All says:

Hey Bastard, how about talking a little about Osama Obama's connection to Tony Rezco? He's a half-a-nigger that brings nothing to the table except for a good marketing job. If he gets in maybe a putz like yourself might have a cabinet post as minister of information. I'll be in Mexico for the remainder of his time in office!

GlobalistTechnocrat says:

Well Ron Paul is the only candidate who regularly appears on Alex Jones' radio show. For those who don't know, Jones is a tin foil nut of the first degree who believes Dick Cheney and the Jews blew up the world trade center, and that George H W Bush has homosexual orgies near San Francisco.

btw, I love the lew rockwell link above. Gee he is not a nut and to prove it you use a racist nuts website. Good Job.

Reason magazine (real libertarians, not the whites only paleocons like Rockwell and Paul) has reported now that Rockwell was the ghost writer of the racists Ron Paul newsletter that encouraged people to violate federal gun laws.

And yes Paulites...I am a spy for FEMA ready to take you to our detainment camps Bahahahahahahahahahah

Ronpaulwon'twinshit says:

Oh you DID NOT make fun of the Ronulans! Hahaha, they are the most batshit bunch. Cue the ad nauseum "you hate America/constitiution/blacks (oh wait that was Paul!) comments!

number88 says:

Not just Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from KFYI are mad about John McCain's victory but KKKTAR's Ankkkarlo, they are all going crazy about it!.......

boy i'll tell you that really made my day! IN YOUR FACE ANkkkARLO!!!
now go and cry like a little girl!!!!

Mr. Ryan the anti-Aryan says:

Still talking about Ron Paul?
He's already ancient history. I'm glad Mike the Huckster still remained in the race until super-crazy tuesday, that way the white supremacists 2nd choice(Mitt) will most likely lose, and its proving effective for Juan Mccain.
When Obama becomes the Prez, will he design a bill to make it priority to crackdown on White Supremacists and Militias??? I hope they're ready to "flee to Mexico" like they say they would.

Anonymous says:

Who needs public schools, public and paved roads, medicare, public fire fighters, police, etc. etc.
Oh, let's not forget, Ron Paul hypocritical stance on governmental intervention but doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose even if incest is involved. He's not only a "tin hatter" but a race bater over immigration.
Leonard Clark

StotheizzE23 says:

Mr. Lemons is right on point with this one. I think perhaps the right-wing side of the Republican party sees this campaign as a loss already and are going to do what they can to make sure McCain doesn't win in November.
What scares me is that those bastards have something up their sleeve for 2012, but I don't know what yet. (Jeb Bush?)
And, I don't think Ron Paul is a tin-foil hatter, per se, but his campaign was wrecked by the crazies that supported him. Paul's a good man, with some different ideas (some more different than others), but having people like Todd Stallion on your side sometimes hurts more than it helps.

Sparklenhare says:

Go Hillary...haha...Obama didn't win California, so your vote was LOST!!

Intelligent people will just laugh at you, as I am. I got this through an email, and your just slinging mud at McCain. I'm a Democrat and believe that we need to hear positive things not dug up crap that doesn't make or break a leader.

Go Hillary!!! She fits the bill, in all ways!

Sparklenharesanidiot says:

Hey dumbass. Ever hear of "proportional representation"? That's how the dems apportion delegates. It's not winner take all like the GOP. So votes for Obama did count. That's why Obama and Clinton are so close in delegates. Obama won more states than Hillary. Obama's doing better at fundraising. Hillary just had to loan herself $5 million, and her staff's going without pay.

Try reading a little bit about the democratic process in this country before you shoot your mouth off.

A big raspberry goes to YOU!!

Mari says:

Give it up Paultards. Your pathetic Internet trolling act is beyond tired. Go back to playing Second Life and Dungeons and Dragons.

Globalist Technocrat says:

Mari:

Please do not insult D&D that way. The old board style role playing games may have been the domain of geeks (I should know, I was one) and nerds, but it was intelligent geeks and nerds who never would have fallen for Ron Paulshite.

Lifeisweird says:

I understand and believe in free speech but to not remove the incredibly racist, hateful, and frankly stupid comments (like from "lynch em all") from your blog is just bad news all around.

Like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater there are some forms of speech that are beyond wrong and unsuitable for any newspaper blog. Please take control of your comment board and keep the haters out!

PS, and why would a racist flee to Mexico??

JS says:

Wow! I'm always amazed at how many ignorant bigots are still on this planet! Frightening! You're right on, Mr. Lemons! Barack Obama is the man to take the country back from the right wing nut jobs. And aside from the bigots, fear mongers, religious extremists and other various ignoramuses (sic?) he will unite this country and change the status quo. How refreshing it will be to have a decent, moral and intelligent person in the White House!

I like Barack, but I'm not sure he isn't acting his way well toward the White House. The problem is, when he gets there, he will have to come up with a real solution to a trying problem. As Ron Paul has pointed out, our nation is on the verge of bankruptcy. To his discredit, Ron hasn't said why, nor has he proposed a bona fide solution. But Barack, much as he is plausible material for a great president (and we WILL need a great president to turn the present mess around), is even farther from solution. The currency was privatized under a Democrat, Wilson, who later apologized to the country that he had erred to its certain demise. Why is this vital issue off the table now? Because *both* parties are so corrupt, they venture only to betray us. I sent a proposition to the Obama campaign, qualifying a singular solution to the problems which beset us. No answer, just as has been the case for 35 years with most of the candidates, and with every president. None of them however can prove how we can even maintain a circulation without suffering ever greater debt, because to maintain a circulation, we must re-borrow all that we pay against principal and interest as subsequent debts, increases so much as periodic interest. The time upon us is the consequence of that unassented process. Obama will not solve or avert the near term collapse we will suffer unless he adopts solution. Your article doesn't even touch on the real issue. The only candidate pointing their finger the right direction is Ron Paul. Obama could do us great service by replying to the proposition of mathematically perfected economy. I will debate solution online with any candidate. Any. So, if you advocate a candidate, or alternate proposition, why would you evade that debate if your candidate/proposition can serve us?

Just something to think about, as we plunge ever deeper into the momentous debt which will collapse a nation which has already been stripped of practically all its real industry.

Let's face one thing first- Obama isn't going to do one progressive thing for the US. Both political parties have their ears open first to corporate lobbyists and the big interests in the nation. It is possible that Republicans are throwing this whole race, knowing that their policies have got the country in deep shit. It would be prudent for them to create a new Clinton-era, that is Obama or Hillary will inherit a great deal of the problems created by Bush and Co., and the average American is so dirt-stupid that they will believe, with the help of the pundits, that this is actually the Democrats fault.

Also it is likely that some major military action against Iran is being planned. Obviously it is very undesirable for Republicans to be in the White House after another pre-emptive invasion for bullshit reasons. And if you don't think Obama is considering pre-emptive action against Iran, you had better think again. Neither Obama or Hillary will consider pulling out of Iraq, and both support military action against Iran.

Furthermore, Obama is not the progressive outsider people like to paint him as. When asked if he was a Muslim, he denied it and claimed to be Christian. All well and good, but his answer should have been: "It doesn't matter what religion I am."

And now on a digression- Ron Paul sucks, and Ron Paul's cult-like followers are going to be the bane of the internet. Face it- your guy lost, like every other vote-splitting populist out there. If you want change, let's do something about this electoral college first.

allen perdue says:

You liberals are so ignorant. You really think that by bashing all republicans and conservatives that the world will suddenly be all well and at peace. You morons just cant face the truths of life. You ignore the facts and embrace the hope. This isn't Disney and you cant just hope everything will be ok. You have no solutions for all your complaints. Just promise all the other loser liberals that it will all be better, government should take care of us all, and thats about it. You people are poisening and weakening this country as well as the entire human population. I always wondered how prosperous civilizations dissapeared and liberalism gives me my answer. If your movement takes over this country, we will be taken over by another for sure. Losers!
