BREAKING NEWS: NEW TIMES FOUNDERS MICHAEL LACEY AND JIM LARKIN ARRESTED!

Thu Oct 18, 2007 at 11:45:54 PM

New Times founders Jim Larkin (left) and Michael Lacey (right), now under arrest.

Plainclothes Maricopa County Sheriff's officers arrested New Times founders, Village Voice Media Executive Editor Michael Lacey and Chairman/CEO Jim Larkin at their homes late Thursday evening for revealing grand jury information in their recent story Grand Jury Targets New Times and Its Readers. Both were taken into custody and have yet to be bailed out. Lacey is believed to be in the 4th Ave. Jail. And there are reports that Larkin was taken to a substation in Mesa.

In a related incident, New Times reporter Ray Stern was issued a citation today for taking digital photos of Sheriff's Office documents at the law offices of Iafrate and Associates in Phoenix. This is particularly absurd since all Stern did was try to take pictures of MCSO press releases -- public documents by any definition. When asked to leave by Michelle Iafrate, the head of the law firm, he did so without incident.

It's believed the arrests have nothing to do with Judge Baca, the judge in charge of the grand jury currently investigating Phoenix New Times. Speculation is that New Times enemy Dennis Wilenchik, the special prosecutor in the case, may have filed a complaint against Lacey and Larkin, and that's the reason they were arrested.

Published yesterday, the cover story with its dual byline revealed details of an ongoing grand jury inquiry into a law allegedly violated years ago when reporter John Dougherty revealed Sheriff Arpaio's address in a column. Dougherty was looking into Sheriff Joe's real estate transactions at the time. The law makes it illegal to publish the address online, not in the physical paper.

New Times lawyer Steve Suskin called it "highly unusual" that someone would be arrested for a Class 1 misdemeanor such as Lacey and Larkin were, and called it "unprecedented in the annals of journalism."

More on this outrageous abuse of power by Sheriff Arpaio, County Attorney Andy Thomas and their attack-dog Wilenchik as it develops.

I trust that the AP, Gannett News Service. the NYT and all TV & radio networks---including Air America---have been notified of this outrage. This makes the jailing of Judith Miller over the Valierie Plame case look like a night at Club Med. This should lead Keith Olberman's program Friday!!! Will; the Republic run it---or do they STILL regsrd the NT as a non-entity as Mr. Pulliam ordered 30+ years ago?? In all modesty, remember I am the one who SAVED the NT from bankruptcy BEFORE Lacey & Larkin took over by guaranteeing a $2000 loan in 1968 or so to then publisher-editor Daniel Ben-Horin, a former Republic youth columnist fired by Pulliam in favor of his nephew in law-- the late Paul Schatt.who later became editorial page editor of first the Gazette and then the Republic before being demoted after Pulliam's death (which occurred during a meeting of the City Council while I was a member in 1975). BTW, Pulliam ALSO ordered that MY name not be printed again "unless he commits suicide,"accordiong to several employees at the time.

Jim Cozzolino says:

Somebody needs to arrest Candy Ass Thomas and Bozo Joke Arpaio....
This is nuts....Where is the FBI ? The Attorney General ?
How can these assholes get away with bullshit like this ?
When does it end ?
When do these butchers, Thomas & Arpaio go to jail themselves ?

Gary Klahr says:

JIM is CORRECT---Terry Goddard needs to arrest Thomas & Arapaio. Remember, Arapaio used to work for ME---at least indirectly. He was on the Board of CODAMA, the former anti-drug and mental health agency, when he was DEA Director. I was on the Board for 15 years from 1975-90 and served as PRESIDENT in 1980-81 with Joe serving under me as a Director. He was a moderate, reasonable guy then with an ego no bigger than mine (which is pretty big of course).

Dennis Wilenchick says:

Klahr and Cozzolino: your both next. We'll be knocking on your door very soon. You too, Lemmons

First, the law about online publishing of Arpaio's address is stupid and needs to be repealed.

Second, even if his influence was indirect, this sounds like abuse of police authority by Arpaio.

When will Maricopa County voters finally get tired of this blowhard clown?

Saint Augustine says:

Hello from Florida. Since they are investigating visitors to your website I thought I'd give them the opportunity for a Florida vacation.

Do you suppose if I alledge that I have damning information about drug money being used to buy real estate that I might get an expense paid trip to Phoenix?

is it true that Arpaio blows goats for nickels?

will I be arrested for suggesting that?

Jim Thompson says:

Yup. Extraordinary rendition, rits of mandamus...how long before we get into ex post facto laws to make it more convenient for this degenerate scumbags like Arpaio and Mesa P.D. to cover up their filth and corruption? I figure they're already trying that but may be encountering some slight residual resistance from the local judiciary apparatus. THAT won't last much longer, either. Arpaio is a full-time professional criminal; he belongs in prison.

This time Sheriff Joe and butt-buddy "Candy" Thomas have gone too far. In their attempt to harass New Times for simply printing articles which show the true nature of these blowhards, the two Nazis and their hired henchman are revealing their true colors. The arrogance of these guys to go after viewers of the New Times internet site would be really scary if it weren't so stupid. This whole affair is an embarrassment for Maricopa County and the State of Arizona. The people of our great state should rise to the occasion and run these anti-American, Free Press hating rednecks the hell out..

They can investigate my readership here in DC, and maybe stop by to see the Constitution while they're in the neighborhood.

Hello brothers and sister progressives and Americans. I've got a really, really big story for you and you've probably already heard. Yesterday, I was amazed to check out the front cover of the Phoenix New Times, in it they detailed how they were being investigated by the racist and fascist Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas in a grand jury investigation. They even went on to reveal that subpeonas had already been issued for everything and anything that had been written (on the J. Edgar Hoover of Arizona:Maricopa county Sheriff Joe Arpaio) and further these subpeonas were also issued for everything the readers to their website and newspaper had written and who they were.

The article is probably the largest the Phoenix New Times has ever written in my opinion. Further, the Associated Press on the web site 1480kphx.com is reporting that they were arrested yesterday (Lacey, Dougherty) . These two men have through the years been top notch journalists who have investigated things the msm wouldn't. So, you can imagine the shock here in Arizona about their arrests in the journalist and progressive community. Before Lacey and Dougherty were arrested they stated that they knew they would probably be violating the law but that sometimes civil disobedience is justified, in this case the intimidating of our free press here in Arizona and by implication throughout the United States of Arizona.

Further, it appears the Phoenix New Times chief rival the Arizona Republic is not allowing their excellent reporters to get this story out as they believe it is more important to get rid of one of their rivals than to stand up for the free press. Well, I just hope the Arizona Republic comes to it senses and jumps on this story big time.

My friends, this is huge and I know they have not always been friendly to progressive causes but make no mistake about it: This is a clear and callous assault on the Free Press. These two men are now the owners of the largest amount of alternative newspapers in the country including the Village Voice. Further, I would read their online paper immediately or if your in the Phoenix Metro to pick up a copy immediately as the Arpaio and Thomas gang might ordered all of the Phoenix News Times paper taken off the stands.

If we let this attack stand by the increasingly aggressive and fascist Andrew Thomas (Maricopa County Attorney and Sheriff Joe Arpaio) than none of us are safe anymore. Arpaio and Sheriff Joe have become the McCarthy anti-constitutional witch hunters of not only Arizona but America. They have been emboldened by that other fascist and King George W. Bush who also is using fascist and anti-constitutional methods to go after his political opponents and it is known that both of these Neo-Con Republicans Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County Attorney are rabid supporters of this despicable anti-American un-constitutional George W. Bush.

Some might say it is to late, but we must do something before they come for our loved ones and finally us.

Of course, everything I am writing to you about here is to be done legally and non-violently in accordance with the laws of Humanity and our beloved United States Constitution.

Update: I have spoken with the executive assistant to the Arizona Attorney General's office of Terry Goddard and they are aware of the situation and actually like people to call them and help keep them aware of details that might not have come out.

Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa Couty Sheriffs Department--Beware the Attack of the Goon Squads

It was a sunny day in April 2003 as I drove to work down Camelback Road in West Phoenix that morning. I hadn't noticed the two
unmarked SUVs following a short distance behind me until one of them pulled up along my left side and started shadowing me. My
mind raced, "what the hell is going on here?" I glanced up at the rear view mirror to see a black SUV right behind me, and the gold one was just to my left, its occupants glaring at me. For some reason, I recalled an insurance scam where two cars teamed up against an unsuspecting victim, created an "accident" and collected the insurance money. Not knowing the true intention of the encroaching SUVs, I sped up slightly. A moment later the driver of the black SUV
activated the red and blue flashing lights which were high mounted to the vehicle's flip down sun visor. I wondered "now what? Does he want me to pull over? Were these really law officers?" I wasn't sure,
I didn't hear any sirens. I was to find out later that these people were in fact one of Joe Arpaio's "goon squads". A multi-agency drug task force completely undercover with little oversight. Acting more like a gang of thugs they criss-crossed the county doing exactly as they pleased, squashing the rights of anyone who got in their way.

I turned right onto a side street and stopped. The black SUV pulled behind and the gold one remained further back. I waited until an Hispanic officer in jeans with a black T-shirt pulled over his bullet
proof vest approached my window. I noticed his MCSD badge hooked along with his weapon to his belt. He mentioned my rate of speed and asked for my drivers license and proof of insurance. He returned to his SUV and I sat there thinking something smelled fishy.
As he returned, he said "we have information that you are engaged in the trafficking of methamphetamine and cocaine." I couldn't
believe my ears. I said "I have no idea what you're talking about!". "There must be some mistake!". He mentioned a confidential
informant. He told me to step out of the car, I sarcastically questioned "what is this? Iraq?". I opened the door and got out, and a feeling of foreboding overtook me. At that very moment I felt like a
foreigner in a strange land. All the freedoms and liberties afforded an American citizen who was simply minding his own business, driving to work one day seemed to vanish into thin air as I sat there
hand-cuffed on the curb.

Even a good o' boy like me is amazed at the redneck/nazi style of your "law enforcement" bozo's. They must be eating the wrong mushrooms out there. This stomping on the press adds a whole new meaning to 'wild wild west'. That twisted clown of a sheriff ought to be ashamed, and the deputy prosecutor should be disbarred like the DA fella up in Carolina! I'd best cancel my vacation plans 'till you folks get your act together and run that sheriff outa town! Good luck!

He's too stinking old says:

Arpaio turned 75 last spring. His judgement must be going out the window. No one around him has the balls to stand up to him, so guess what - EXPECT LOTS MORE FOOLISH BLUNDERS OUTA THIS DUDE. Really he does not care about getting kicked out of his job. He'd rather go out with a bang.

Perhaps his wife will accomodate him for us.

Censor-Free says:

I don't know if any of you understand the deeper danger going on here. It's not simply some wing-nut sheriff that will hopefully stop being a 'bad man'.
Here's Naomi Wolf's article from April in the Guardian UK (I'm sure she wouldn't be allowed to print it in America). It's called 'Fascist America in 10 Easy Steps'. See if you can find this story in those steps. (Hint: it's near the end of them.)
