Defending Zack de la Rocha: Rage Against the Machine vs. KTAR's Darrell Ankarlo

Preach on, my revolutionary, rich-ass brother....

Right-wing lip-flapper Darrell Ankarlo of the Mormon-owned KTAR 92.3FM had an eyebrow-lifter of a show this a.m., dealing with the statements of Rage Against the Machine firebrand Zack de la Rocha during the recent Rage reunion at Coachella. If you haven't heard about it, during an extended sequence from the song "Wake Up," De la Rocha went off on American hegemony in the world, exclaiming,

A friend of ours said if the same laws were applied to U.S. Presidents as were applied to the Nazis after WWII, that every single one of them, every last rich white one of them, from Truman on would be hung to death and shot. And this current administration is no exception. They should be hung and tried and shot as war criminals.

Apparently the "friend" De la Rocha was referring to was none other than radical icon and MIT prof Noam Chomsky, who wrote in the 1993 book What Uncle Sam Really Wants, that,

I think, legally speaking, there's a very solid case for impeaching every American president since the Second World War. They've all been either outright war criminals or involved in serious war crimes

The crowd responded to De la Rocha's incendiary remarks with a roar of approval. Ankarlo feigned amazement that De la Rocha said what he said and that so many people agreed with him. He suggested that what De la Rocha said was illegal or treasonous until KTAR's own house counsel set him straight on this little thing called the First Amendment. But to Ankarlo's credit, he allowed on callers who essentially concurred with what De la Rocha had to say, including one 9/11 nutbar, who suggested Bush & Co. deserved to be tried or impeached for allowing 9/11 to happen.

Now, the 9/11 conspiracy theories are all bullshit. But the reason why so many on the Left buy into this grassy knoll crackpottery is that the Bushies used the political capital they amassed from 9/11 to mislead us into a very unwise conflict in Iraq. Prune-faced Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld claimed that the administration knew exactly where Saddam Hussein's Weapons of Mass Destruction were hidden. Bush himself famously suggested in his 2003 State of the Union address that Saddam was on his way to acquiring nukes. We've been lied to, over and over again.

The result? 3,555 American dead and counting. Anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead, depending on whose estimates you buy. Plus, no one knows how we get out of this mess without causing a worse catastrophe. And Ankarlo wonders why people hate Bush's ass? The Wall Street Journal reported at the end of April that Dubya's approval rating is 28%. Screw Zack de la Rocha. I'm surprised an angry mob doesn't storm the White House and tar and feather the cracker.

Zack may be full of the brown stuff with all his limousine revolution jibber-jabber. But he's expressing a genuine anger over what's gone down with Iraq. A lot of people are rightly PISSED. However, I don't argue for lynching Republicans, because so many Dems went along with the war as well. In fact, the American people let this crap happen. We were attacked by al-Qaeda, which was based in Afghanistan. Iraq had nothing to do with it. And that should have been as apparent in 2003 as it is four years later.

To call someone a nutbar because of them having a different belief to that of the frankly joke-worthy official story only shows you to be more ignorant and close-minded than the rest of the article has shown you to be.
